About this project
“It Takes a Village” is a public art project to serve the communities in the Verde Valley (Cottonwood, Arizona and 4 surrounding towns), their businesses, artists, schools and youth. Local artists will mentor teen artists as they create 15 public murals throughout our area. Local business owners will offer their walls. They will collaborate with teams of artists, students and mentors to design and paint a mural around the theme, “It Takes a Village”. The questions for the team will be “What does that saying mean to you?” “How do you see that in action in our community?” “What images and/or words shall we paint on our walls to tell the world how we feel about that theme in our community?”
These dialogues are crucial to bridge generations and cultures, to discover in depth the needs, concerns and the abilities of individuals in our communities. Our mural project will bring these expressions to life offering understanding and vibrancy.
As an artist/mentor, I will use my 14 years of experience in mural painting to run preparatory lessons in public mural painting for the team; size may be 10 - 20 members per mural. Businesses must have a wall available at least 8’ x 10’, the larger the better. This inter-generational team will work together to build a strong and vibrant community while they expand their horizons. Topics like sustainability, education, healthcare, economic growth and our precious environment will take the lead in our discussions.
The project will extend further into the community as we partner with local schools and after school programs. Business owner/community professionals will sponsor art projects with artists and teachers, perhaps addressing a business or community attitude (what I love about my community), need (what I need from my community), event (posters advertisements) or glaring issues (I wish my community would ……).
Funding will pay artist fees, promotional materials and paint supplies for one year of operation. This work will cause our community and its passersby to feel the vibrancy offered by these visual reminders of our connectedness and our caring for each other, our environment, our youth and our place on the planet. Our collaborations will strengthen our awareness of and respect for each others' needs and abilities. The arts will become a greater part of our lives as we educate our children and grow our communities with the arts.
The community will see the value of arts education adding to their vibrancy and sustain and develop art education and events in the schools.
