HELP US SHOUT!

Colored Me: Black Women Shout from the Ivory Tower is a vibrant collection of narratives and essays from Black women who were educated at elite private schools. I have decided to self-publish Colored Me, and your generous donation will support the first-run printing of my book!

As a Black female graduate of a private, predominantly white elite boarding school, I can recollect instances of prejudice, racism, and sheer exhaustion! The task of negotiating at least three worlds (my Blackness, my femaleness, and my socio-economic status) was a heavy load to bear. Yet, there were also precious moments during those years when I felt truly empowered. Those events have shaped the woman that I am today.

My experiences as a student and later as a private school teacher/administrator led me to explore the stories of other black women who were educated at elite private schools. My doctoral dissertation research uncovered a diversity of experiences, and I vowed that I would not let those stories simply sit on my shelf. I promised myself and the women in my study that I would write a book wherein they could tell their own story, along with other women across the nation.

Colored Me: Black Women Shout from the Ivory Tower is the realization of my promise. The title pays homage to Zora Neale Hurston who, in her 1929 article “How it Feels to be Colored Me”, discussed how it felt to be a “colored” woman in a sea of whiteness at Barnard College. Hurston eloquently states, “[b]eside the waters of the Hudson, I feel my race. Among the thousand white persons [at Barnard], I am a dark rock surged upon, overswept by a creamy sea. I am surged upon and overswept, but through it all, I remain myself….”

Please support the printing of this powerful book! Colored Me houses gifts of personal wisdom that will bring a fresh angle to the discussion of what it takes to succeed as a woman of color in modern society.

The rewards program listed to the right highlights the various suggested contribution levels. However, feel free to donate as much or as little as you can. The maximum pledge is sky’s the limit! Even if you don’t have a spare dollar for my project, telling your friends about it would be a great benefit to the enterprise. I thank you in advance for spreading the word!

You can find me on Facebook, Twitter, and at www.coloredme.com. Thank you all for your support. You’re helping to make a dream come true!

Colored Me Excerpts...

“So I think I felt like being Black made me invisible, and that was what their definition was. That my problems were not problems...it kind of made me invisible.”

“Somebody should have fought for me…”

“I’m supposed to be able to come to school and figure out who I am and maybe teach somebody who they are experientially, but it’s not my job to sit up here and be the living, breathing African-American studies curriculum.”

“Where am I? What am I supposed to be doing? What am I supposed to be wearing? And if one more person tells me how well I speak, I’m going to lose my mind.”
