Why a pen.
There are countless pens out there. Some are decent, but few if any have ventured beyond some version of a cylinder. Cylinders are easy to make, but they're not ideal - they create pressure points and cumulative strain when writing...that's why ergonomics is so critical in this application. It was the driving factor in the development of the P22, and it's what makes using this pen transcendent.
We saw the opportunity to make a far better writing instrument, to inspire, to be provocative, to take the pen into the future...and we succeeded.
The P22 experience.
The P22 is ideal for any discerning pen lover who is seeking the sublime writing experience. The P22 will thrill those who have a deep love for well-designed products which are executed at the highest level.
The P22 is intentionally minimalist by design. From the onset, ergonomics drove the P22’s fluid form and streamlined surface. Its smooth body is evocative of a drop of liquid alloy in motion or a sensual Brâncuși sculpture.
What's also exciting is that the technology used for the P22 allowed us to create a near-perfect ergonomic form with virtually no waste.
Optimally weighted and beautifully balanced, the P22 can be held ambidextrously anywhere along its unique “pinch” points, allowing for an unparalleled writing experience with ease and comfort.
With a simple 180º turn, the rollerball tip is exposed. With the same turn it is retracted. The P22 incorporates the cap-less Schmidt P 8126 cartridge system and the beautiful German-engineered Schmidt twist mechanism which offer an exquisitely smooth writing experience.
We think it's the best. It combines the characteristics of a fountain pen with the convenience of a ballpoint and a flawless .6mm ceramic ball at its tip. The cartridge is guaranteed not to dry out by Schmidt for one year, and refills are readily available via the internet. The P22 ships with two Schmidt P 8126 black ink cartridges.
How the P22 is made.
The P22’s creation is the magical part…we like to say it's grown. The technology is cutting edge and revolutionary, known as additive manufacturing. In simplistic terms this is a highly advanced form of 3-D printing.
The P22 inaugural production uses the leading edge of technological manufacturing--specifically the EBM process, which stands for Electron Beam Melting. EBM is used to manufacture highly complex componentry in aerospace, military, and Formula One racing.
The P22 is grown in 30 micron layers of perfectly fused 6AL-4V grade 5 titanium. To put this in perspective, the average diameter of a human hair is 100 microns; each layer of fused high strength alloy is less than 1/3 the width of a human hair. The build layers are imperceptible to the naked eye.
Why additive manufacturing.
Additive manufacturing gives us the ability to create the optimum form for this particular application, not just another "milled" cylinder. Additionally, it allows us to deliver it with a very, very small carbon footprint.
The end product is identical in all mechanical characteristics to traditionally forged 6AL-4V titanium…with 95% less waste when compared to milling/subtractive manufacturing methods. We think this is hugely important.
Think about it...with traditional subtractive manufacturing methods (such as milling), 75-80% of the initial stock material ends up on the shop floor.
Technology with artisanship.
The P22 is literally detailed and assembled alongside latest generation fighter aircraft componentry...beautiful components worth many hundreds of thousands of dollars each. We refer to it as "Santa's super high tech workshop". The process combines the latest manufacturing technology with artisanal detailing...each P22 is hand finished, one by one.
We approach design and engineering as the equation: Program + Technology + Material = Solution. We've invested hundreds of intense man hours into the design, research, development, fine-tuning and production of the P22.
We believe our dedication to the above approach elevates the bar many fold.
Titanium offers the strongest strength to weight ratio of all standard available alloys and metals.
Unlike aluminum, which is soft and prone to scratching and oxidation, or stainless steel, which is better but heavier and lacks the superlative overall corrosion resistance, titanium performs best in all areas, and we refuse to cut corners.
How can I get the P22.
The P22 will be available in a limited edition launch on Kickstarter. Each instrument will have its own serial number; quantities will be limited to this specific campaign.
Two finishes are available: Satin (highlighting titanium’s natural warmth), and Mirror (showcasing a smooth, highly reflective polish).
For the time being this is a one-off opportunity. We have invested time and resources into its design and prototyping. Now we want to bring it to you.
Dimensions and weight.
The length (tip retracted) of the P22 is 5.175", with a maximum width of .575" - or 13.14cm in length and 1.46cm in width. The P22 weighs in at 1.75oz, or 50g
Realizing the vision.
With your help, the P22 will be the world’s first production based, additively manufactured titanium writing instrument.
The math for this system of production works in volume. The funding we seek will allow us to put this incredible pen in the hands of a select few at an amazing price.

Risks and challenges
We've been involved in designing and manufacturing innovative products incorporating advanced technologies for more than twenty years. We take every project seriously, and customer satisfaction is one of our highest priorities. We know how to do this.
The only risk we can foresee is if we are overloaded with orders it will extend our deliverable timeline. Bearing that in mind we will ship orders as they are received...first come, first served.
But don't stress, we have a plan to help us accelerate production if the P22 is a big hit.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
