About

SYNOPSIS

Gina hasn’t thought about her North Carolina hometown since she left it years ago to become a playwright in New York City. So when she receives the news that her father has passed away, she finds herself thrust back into a world she once left far behind, face to face with a broken family and the lofty expectations of those she turned her back on.

Opting to avoid her grief, rather than face it, she distracts herself by galavanting around town with her brother Charlie and adopted cousin Jamie, with whom she’s harbored a forbidden infatuation for years. With every familiar face, the pressure mounts to prove herself, to show this old town that she accomplished all they hoped she would, and, most of all, to make her late father proud.

As the funeral approaches, Gina’s reluctance to accept her father’s death slowly alienates her grieving family. And, after several family squabbles, a drunken party, a painfully awkward sexual encounter, all that is left for Gina is true, unavoidable grief.

As the morning of the wake arrives, leaning on her family’s affections, she discovers the power of honesty, self-awareness, and, yes, even sadness.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

I wrote this film having recently attended the funeral of my uncle, who died in his sleep of a brain aneurysm, brought on by a long-undiagnosed case of leukemia. He was fifty years old.

During the days leading up to his funeral, I began to sense something odd in my family. Instead of letting ourselves feel the grief and sadness we clearly needed to feel, we took every chance we could to divert our attention from the present issue. Had a stranger happened upon the household, there would have been absolutely zero indication that someone had just died. But at the wake, everything changed. It was like a traffic light went from red to green, and everyone finally had the go ahead to grieve. I saw people weep like never before. My aunt and cousins recalled the love they felt toward this strong, kind human being. My grandfather sat weeping, alone in a sea of empty chairs, witnessing the great love that this man had poured out upon the world around him.

This film is my way of honoring that idea, of raising up those who feel lost and without direction, of exploring the depths of family bonds, and of revealing the power of sadness as the one of the truest realizations of love.

Risks and challenges

As with any low-budget film there are challenges that must be overcome. Our goal from the beginning is to make this film the right way, fairly paying and feeding the cast and crew, treating our friends and investors with care and respect. As a contributor, you are an essential part of the process, from development all the way through post-production, and we pledge to reward you with the gratitude and respect that you deserve!

Occasionally, challenges arrive on set, such as weather and technical difficulties, but, through careful planning and contingencies, we will overcome these potential obstacles.
