Has anyone ever told you that what you want to do can't be done? Have you ever believed in something so much that it was all you could think of? Luiza is a big dreamer and with her family and friends around, she can do anything!
"A Reason to Smile" is a story that began with Volume 1 about a little girl who is a walking silver lining. The kickstarter for that book can be found here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/969189472/find-a-reason-to-smile
This endearing story is about a kid who, while walking through New York City, gets to help people out. Though the problems didn't go away, they find that working together helps them deal with the problems easier. That book is just the tip of the iceberg. I hope to write and illustrate more stories exploring the journey that Luiza has in her life! I have written a story about a character that young kids can aspire to be like, older kids can see themselves in, and a story sophisticated enough that adults can relate to.
This Kickstarter Campaign is to help fund Volume 2 and continue making this book annually. The standard edition is 44 pages of full color storytelling which will showcase Luiza's experiences in her home life, her vivid imagination, and will explore questions of gender in sports! There will also be a hardcover special edition that will showcase more art and behind the scenes info on how the book is made. With your contribution you will help to make Volume 2 a reality and will receive your pre-ordered book and more. I am self publishing this book with hopes it will one day be found in libraries and classrooms across the country in order to expose children to stories that can empower them and give them some great memories.
Volume 1 was published on October 9th of 2014 and debuted at The New York Comic Con (NYCC), the biggest comic book convention on the East Coast!!! As of April 17th, it was officially sold out (along with all buttons, medium t-shirts, hand knit dolls, and magnets)!!! Through my efforts traveling to comic book conventions in Portland, Seattle, Virginia, New Jersey and New York City, I have been able put this book into the hands of kids and adults alike, selling 500 copies of this book in 6 months!!! The idea that a kid is inspiring people to smile has been a well received story and I hope to continue writing and illustrating more fun for everyone.
I wrote the first volume of "A Reason to Smile!" for a good number of reasons. Long story short, I felt the book was needed. Luiza is a kindhearted kid who loves life with such a vigor that her energy is infectious. Without superpowers or magic, she finds a way to make the day better for those around her. Volume 2 will continue to showcase the fun and possibilities that this world has to offer that we can all take advantage of.
Many parents worry about finding comics that are suitable for their children with regard to the content. I am proud to say that "A Reason to Smile!" is an all ages book. It is focused on 3rd to 8th grade kids but I strive to make a book that is accessible to all, not a book that kids or adults will say is JUST for little ones. Adults have read the first volume and testified to the fact that it related with their own lives and views. Children have also said that Luiza gave them the courage to take charge of their circumstances and have the power to affect them (I am paraphrasing here, but parents get really excited about sharing the growth of their kids=]). One parent told me she was proud to have bought my book because it gives her daughter another choice rather than just reading about girls who are princesses or drama queens. A man who is now in remission said that while he was in the hospital during his chemo treatment, reading "A Reason to Smile!" kept his hopes up. Thankfully those aren't the only testamonials they are the ones that come to mind quickest.
Vol.1 found Luiza helping people find their smile, even when times got really tough. In Vol.2, you will be introduced to her family, see where her imagination takes her, and find out if Luiza can make a touchdown! I want to challenge everyone who reads the story of Luiza to think about life in new and different ways, all while having some fun and sharing a smile or two.
I created a softcover & a hardcover edition for a few reasons. Those who want to have a good story to read for themselves or their families without worries of price can enjoy the Standard Edition. Collectors and art enthusiasts will enjoy the Hardcover Edition for the behind the scenes art that was created to build this labor of love. You will also get to enjoy an art gallery with pinups by Tom Bancroft (http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Tom_Bancroft), Erin Hunting (http://erinhunting.com/), Elizabeth Beals (http://www.elizabethbeals.com/), Sara Woolley (http://www.sarawoolley.com/), Ed Watson (http://www.edwatsonart.com/), and Chris Copeland (https://instagram.com/chriscopelandart). There are also 2 slots in the Rewards for you to be the writer and editor of 2 pinup's I will illustrate for the Art Gallery (with the original art being shipped to your home!).
Here are your options in helping to fund "A Reason to Smile!" Vol.2
Thank you so very much your time and I hope to bring you a new reason to smile! If I am blessed with reaching my goal and am able to hit some stretch goals, the first I have in mind is a possible beginning readers book for ages 7 and under. I hope to have a chapterbook down the line as well and want to make "A Reason to Smile!" a series that you and your family can enjoy for years to come! Please help me make that happen!
Risks and challenges
The last time I did a kickstarter, I miscalculated the time it would take creating this book. I believe extending the time from August to October is a much more realistic time frame. I expect the extra 2 months will allow for everything to be done in a timely manor. I hope to have the new book debut annually during NYCC. I think my greatest challenge is time management, but I pride myself from learning and growing from each experience so I will be making this new goal a reality.
If you view my last kickstarter, you can see I made an effort to make sure everyone was in the loop and that they were informed about the progress I have made. I will continue to be as transparent as possible so you can feel confident in the project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
