A Reason to Smile!: Making Friends!
The 3rd installment of the A Reason to Smile Series! Luiza Brillante gets a board book treatment, enjoying Bball w/new friends in NYC
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Sun, October 21 2018 4:00 PM UTC +00:00.
"A Reason to Smile!: Making Friends!" is the 3rd book in the "A Reason to Smile!"(ARtS) Book series and it stars Luiza Brillante like you've never seen her before. Luiza's story is now in a board book!
Luiza loves to see the beauty in her world and loves to get out of the house to do just that! Playing in the park is just as fun as playing with her electronics and her toys, and by being outside, she gets to meet new people that she can become friends with!
I've always had a hard time making friends and I wish I had the self confidence to simply approach people and get involved. This book helps reinforce many things we want our kids to have in their foundation, one of those things is that playing together is the best way to play.
You and your family will see your morals and upbringing reinforced while reading the "A Reason to Smile!" books. In "Making Friends!", your kid will see kids doing the same things they do with their friends. Sharing the ball together, being kind to one another, and having fun is priority number 1 here!
One thing that I try to do in the books I write is not be too preachy but still exhibit lessons and ideas that help promote positivity and foundation building/reinforcing. The image above does just that, showing our kids, not telling them, that families do many things together. While the idea that many fathers of color are not in the lives of their children, I am seeing my generation, and those who came after, with their children more than ever before. I want to support and praise that.
I made a story about a little Puerto Rican girl because there are so few stories about us that are made to show Puerto Ricans in a positive light in pop culture (as I write this, my internet browser is telling me Rican is mispelled). Try to name more than 5 (please email me if you do because I'd love to know them as I can't even name that many). I wanted to make a regular, every day story that just happened to star people you may not have met before, or people who may live right next door to you that never get a starring role. I believe that with our guidance, the more we expose our children to, the more they will see as normal. They will learn acceptance, understanding, and compassion by seeing they have shared experiences, and this is the foundation of the "A Reason to Smile!" book series.
"A Reason to Smile!: Making Friends!" is completely finished, and will be a full color, 6 in. x 6 in., 40 pt laminated paperboard board book, printed by PrintNinja. This kickstarter will help raise the funds to self publish my 3rd book, ordering a minimum of 500 copies as board books aren't printed on demand like the other books I've published. If we reach $7k, 500 more books can be ordered to make available to more children. Each reward includes shipping and taxes so the price you see is what you pay! You can expect an extremely beautifully created book that will keep your child interested in rereading it every day before the holidays arrive!
As each book I've written and illustrated is made in a square format, I've created art for each cover that fills the front and back of each book. The right is the front cover and the left is the back where the barcode and book summary will go.
This is the first book I've written and illustrated and you can get this with the Board Book in the $40 Young readers Option. It features Luiza helping people while people watching in NYC. She loves making up stories about where people are going and what they're doing and occasionally has an opportunity to help them as well! Their problems don't go away, but by working together, they find a reason to smile! This book is an all ages book, targeting children in elementary school ages 5 to 10.
Volume 2 is my second book and you can get this with the Board Book in the $40 Volume 1 Owners Option. It focuses on Luiza trying to have fun while dealing with her own obstacles. No matter what gets in her way, from chores, to crazy NYC streets and subways, to bullies, she tries to find a positive path to reach her desired outcome! This book is all ages as well but targets kids ages 7 to 15.
Through this kickstarter, you can order the Board Book, as well as the hardcovers of Volume 1 and/or 2, along with 4x6 inch prints of the covers of each book, stickers, a book mark, t-shirts and crochet dolls! Check out the options on the right of this page to select the right choice for you and yours!
These are the shirts inspired by the series. El Coqui is the icon on Luiza's chest and it is a stylized version of the petroglyphs that the Tainos would draw to represent the tree frog that is indigenous to Puerto Rico. El Sol De Jayuya is the same but represents the sun, and Wutup Dog is my original creation which Yuen wears in Volume 2. You can now have these wonderful items to wear as well!
These are custom sketches I've either done at comic cons or through private means and this is something you can have for yourself or a loved one in the $125 A Book plus a Sketch Option.
I've worked my tail off in order to bring you another great story and I hope to be able to deliver this wonderful story about this amazing little girl! Thank you for your time and I can't wait to deliver this book to you and your family!
Risks and challenges
The board books will be printed and shipped from China so as soon as I receive them, I will create an update that you will receive via email so you are kept in the loop. I've never produced anything from overseas so I am at the mercy of inexperience. I will communicate every step of the way to help you know your pre-order is secure.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
