About this project
Seven years ago, I started writing a historical fiction book (War of Loyalties) about spies who lived during WW1. I wanted to imagine the psychological effects spying could have on agents and how families of spies were affected by this profession. I also wanted to bring back an older, classic style of storytelling rich with characters--one that Dickens might have used in his era. While writing the book, I had the privilege of attending writer's conferences, sharing War of Loyalties with friends, and researching traditional vs. independent publishing. War of Loyalties saw multiple rewrites over the years, and is now the first in a series about the Folkestone spy ring (a totally fictional spy ring, which I created.)
Over the last little while, it has been my dream to see War of Loyalties come out during the years of the World War 1 centennial. I realized that to make this happen, independent publishing (publishing the book myself) was the way to go. Indie publishing gives me full control to bring the story to you in the way I originally envisioned.
One of the drawbacks of independent publishing--and also one of its strengths--is that everything comes directly out of pocket. It's hard to fund completely on your own. This gives the author the opportunity to go directly to the reader (that's you!) and ask if you are interested in helping bring this book to print by contributing financially to make it possible. Financial contribution is a gracious gift, and I hope War of Loyalties is something that will bless you for your generosity!
Wondering what War of Loyalties is about? Here's a back cover synopsis:
April, 1917. A ring of German spies threatens the security of England’s most vital shipping point. Newly-recruited agent Ben Dorroll must uncover false British agents who are traitors to their country. However, Ben’s secrecy may be the very thing that puts their mission in jeopardy. Unwilling to trust fellow agent Jaeryn Graham with the clues hidden in his family’s broken past, he wants to resign and go back to his medical practice. But success means one last chance at winning the respect of the father he’s never met. And when he learns that his family identity holds the key to capturing the spy ring, Ben has no choice but to unite with Jaeryn Graham so that the truth can be discovered.
In the aftermath of the Irish Rebellion, Jaeryn Graham's British colleagues look warily on his Irish background. Always up for a challenge, he thinks his new mission to investigate the true loyalties of his fellow spies should be an opportunity to prove his prowess. But the agents he has to work with are determined to prove he himself is a traitor. Unless he can win the loyalties of his newest assistant, Ben Dorroll, his secret ambitions and his perfect success record will be destroyed.
While the first half of the book is already with my editor, there are some costs that are beyond my ability to cover. This Kickstarter project would cover:
-the second half of the copyediting
-a professional cover design for ebook and print book
-producing the rewards (print books, posters, etc.)
-covering processing fees
All pledges cover sales tax and postage. If you love historical fiction in the style of Charles Dickens or Sherlock Holmes, would you consider contributing to War of Loyalties?
I love this story and these characters so much, and I want to share them with you. Time is growing short, and Kickstarter is all or nothing. If the money isn't raised in 30 days, then your card isn't charged and we have to go back to the drawing board. Even the smallest contribution helps make this dream a reality. There are three main ways to give:
1. Pray for me, that the Lord would continue to guide this writing and publishing process.
2. Give to the project (every dollar counts)!
3. Email the link to this Kickstarter project or share it on social media with friends who love historical fiction, Charles Dickens, or BBC dramas!
Please feel free to browse the rewards and get in touch with me about any questions you may have! Thank-you so much for taking the time to read this.
Risks and challenges
While there are risks and challenges to any project, the book has already been written, and the first half of it is with a professional editor right now. The only apparent risks would be delayed availability from editors and cover designers that could push back the publication date, or unforseen circumstances that would hinder working on the project. It is my prayer and hope that neither would happen, and it is my ultimate goal to get it out for the 2017 centennial of the story.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
