About

Help us grow, spread the word about the Project around the Globe by clicking here!

So many people nowadays, who virtually have everything, suffer from feeling helpless, alone, out of control, useless and completely worthless. Sometimes they feel no motivation or can be so apathetic about their own life that they can’t enjoy things like food, friendships, relationships, beauty. And then, you feel life is too hard to bear, future is too bleak to hope, you’re too exhausted and hurt to cope, being around people and waking up in the morning is too painful.

But this is not what Life has for you. Your parents told you that. Your girlfriend told you that. Your psycho told you that. But it wasn’t enough. We also want to tell you that though not in words, but in a movie.

In this movie we take everything away from a guy and put him in the Ocean. He will be left alone – truly alone – with no living human being around for thousands of miles. If he can survive that, you can. I said alone? It doesn’t include the fish of prey which will be haunting his 0,5 inch thick boat day and night the moment he gets into the open waters. And it’s not sharks only. If he, with only a knife, can overcome that and stay alive – you also can. When life is too hard, think what it feels like being in that veneer sort of a boat during a storm when the most powerful element on Earth makes you feel unwanted in its presence. But if he can carry through that without breaking down, you also can. Because we, humans, allow ourselves to ‘split’ before actually reaching the true point of breaking down.

Here, in Ocean Rowing Society International, for 30 years, we’ve been spending hours on satphones, assisting ocean rowers as technicians, meteorologists and …psychologists.  We can responsibly state, that it’s not your physical ability that takes you across an ocean – it’s a mental and psychological aspect that matters. We learnt that hard truth from the first hands.

Of course, you could have seen documentaries about ocean rowers on national channels and at Adventure Film festivals. But, as a rule, they are more or less similar - stories about beauty and power of ocean and ordeals of actually a Hero.

Our project is an alternative documentary where we want to show not the outer side of Adventure, but an inner truth – whatever it can be.  A genuine truth. And what we believe about that documentary – it’s going to change YOUR life and the life of those you know. Because at the times of rotten luck we need to know – we CAN do it, it is enough of ourselves to pull through it. And this is what our film is about.

You are inclined to think that crossing an ocean is nothing extreme? Consider this:

Here is the shooting area – the Indian Ocean, the most aggressive of all oceans – and the estimated route for Theodore.

The project is done in the following stages:
1. Preparing for the Crossing
2. The Crossing
3. Making the Film

Stage 1. Preparing for the Crossing.

Preparation starts months before the crossing. Theodore needs to find the boat, his home for 2 months or longer in case the Ocean is going to be capricious. The one that caught his attention is in London, UK.

Finding a boat is a big deal as it has to be adjusted for each rower individually. So far, Theodore is planning on getting a boat similar to the one that proved to be reliable in one of his previous rows.

As soon as the boat is found, it should now be equipped with all necessary stuff including:

• navigational equipment (GPS – 2, compass – 2, radio target enhancer, binoculars, maps);
• communication equipment (radio, satellite phone);
• life-support equipment (water maker – 2, solar panels to produce electricity, survival suite);
• film producing equipment (photo/video cameras, memory cards, external HDDs, laptop);
• general stuff (knives, multitool, fishing tackle, specialized canned food, special clothes and footwear, and huge many other things).

To install these all requires not only money, but time as well.

Then the ‘fully-furnished’ boat is going to be delivered to Geraldton, Australia, which takes as long as a month.

Stage 2. The Crossing

The crossing starts when Theodore sets off Geraldton, Australia and finishes when he reaches Mombasa, Kenia. This is where the Guinness record lies – out of 16 successful rows across the Indian Ocean, none has been done coast to coast or non-stop. The estimated time here is 2+ months. We really hope Theodore will get back ashore by September.

The route can be altered because of weather or some other circumstances beyond human control. But whatever the circumstances, Theodore is still determined to finish the crossing coast to coast however long it will take.

Camcorders will be installed in different places aboard, some fixed, some movable, so that everything could be shot from different angles. The sunrises and sunsets, the storms and still water, the daily routine of an ocean rower, the nice and ugly truths of what it really takes to row across the most powerful element on Earth). The material is not going to be censored, there are no second takes and doubles.

Stage 3. Making the Film

As soon as the video materials get back to London, UK, the documentary is ready to be put together. Hundreds of hours of the material will be watched and the best and most interesting shots will be chosen. This stage would involve cooperation with a team of storywriters, directors, editors, film cutters, sound technicians, and others. To help you ‘read between the lines’ all the story will be explained to you and extra information will be provided. You will see how one can really live through the unbearable, unconceivable and unpredictable and make a comeback.

Risks and challenges

Ocean rowing is a potentially dangerous activity that can result in injury or death. And every participant has final responsibility for his own safety.

New technologies have contributed a lot to safety at sea and made the life of those who are undertaking challenge of rowing oceans more … we wouldn’t dare to say easy – just bearable. Ocean is not a human’s element, we may admire it, explore and use it’s richness, but we have gone too far away from our prehistoric ancestors, to whom it was a habitat.

Many as there could be attempts and successful rows across the oceans, they do not trample down a path, it is not and will never be a beaten road. So there is still a serious chance that something can go wrong - the equipment could fail, the storms could break the boat down, the project's executive could be deadly injured. However, we are determined to finish the project successfully, even if it takes more than one attempt.
