Turn your Hasselblad V-system camera digital with the world's first medium format digital-back using your iPhone!
From The Creator
Hello Kickstarter! I’m Daniel Jun Hoshino. I’ve been working as a web designer/programmer and I’m very excited to introduce our very first product to the world and the world of Kickstarter.
I’ve always been into cameras and have loved the quality and beauty of classic film cameras. On the other hand, the accessibility and ease of digital cameras were hard to ignore and in recent years I mostly ended up taking pics with my digital camera and smartphone. But in the back of my mind, I always wanted to dust off my film cameras and take it to good use. I was especially infatuated with the Hasselblad V-system camera for the unique images it produces. So I started brainstorming a way to combine the analog and digital worlds of photography and decided to make it myself!
What is HASSELNUTS?
HASSELNUTS is the world’s first iPhone mount kit which converts the legendary Hasselblad V-system film cameras into a digital camera with an iPhone.
With HASSELNUTS, those who were unable to afford the digital backs can utilize their Hasselblad cameras at an affordable cost! Plus, we want to revitalize the old Hasselblad cameras you have in the back of your closet...we know you have them. Now professionals and amateur photographers can enjoy the classic camera together!
Make Your Photo Come To Life with HASSELNUTS!
With your Hasselblad camera and HASSELNUTS, you can take grainy and very film like images which we guarantee would make your friends question how it’s even possible! Unlike typical digital images, your photo will have a unique character and everything that is on the photo will come to life!
- Reviving the old -
We wanted to preserve the beauty of Hasselblad V-system cameras. At the same time, we required a digital format at an affordable cost that could be easily integrated into our smartphone and SNS heavy lifestyle. Thus the idea of HASSELNUTS came together.
- Demand for an affordable alternative to digital backs -
The sad reality is that only professionals use digital backs due to its cost, starting from at least $3,000-5,000 (for used items) up to $40,000. Those digital backs usually come with very large amounts of pixel. However in reality, that many pixels are not required for the regular usage of digital photography.
Keep The Feeling of The Original Hasselblad Shooting Style
- Sync Shutter makes HASSELNUTS possible to shoot photos like the original.
HASSELNUTS app on the iPhone syncs with the camera shutter. The aperture is set from the lens on the camera body, then the exposure is set through the app. Once the focus is adjusted through the viewfinder and the shutter is pressed, the app will automatically sense the shutter and take the picture. Essentially, HASSELNUTS allows users to feel exactly the same handling when using the normal Hasselblad cameras.
- Never lose the DOF of medium format cameras!
HASSELNUTS iPhone mount kit contains a newly developed original projection screen that collects the light through the lens. HASSELNUTS takes a picture of the imagery on the projection screen. With this process, HASSELNUTS is able to capture imagery that is the same DOF (depth of field) as medium format cameras.
- HASSELNUTS Original Projection Screen*
HASSELNUTS original projection screen is essential in this mount kit. The screen is very similar to a ground glass but it isn’t the exact same. We have developed a glass that has similar characteristics as the film surface just for HASSELNUTS, so the image that is projected on the glass will be much like a film image. This is why the imagery that is taken with HASSELNUTS will become very grainy and film like.
*We are currently developing the screen. All the sample photos on this site are shot with the previous version of the screen.

How to Use HASSELNUTS
On the back of your Hasselblad V-system camera, remove the film magazine. Next insert the digital conversion lens to the camera body. Then attach the HASSELNUTS iPhone digital back module and slide your iPhone 4S/5 to the slot on the back. Launch the HASSELNUTS app which is downloadable from the Apple App Store. Now just shoot your pictures as you normally do. It’s that easy! The HASSELNUTS app syncs with the Hasselblad camera and your pictures are automatically stored to your iPhone photo albums. Any of the unique imagery that Hasselblad cameras are able to produce won’t be lost!
Steps to Use HASSELNUTS
1, Detach your film adaptor from the body.
2, Insert the HASSELNUTS magnifying lens.
3, Attach iPhone digital back module.
4, Attach iPhone onto the iPhone digital back module.
5, Launch the HASSELNUTS app on the iPhone.
6, You are ready to shoot!
<HASSELNUTS works with the following components>
Hasselblad V system camera with a lens attached + HASSELNUTS iPhone mount kit + iPhone4S/5 + HASSELNUTS app
HASSELNUTS App Features
- Store photos into the Photo Album.
All of the photos taken with HASSELNUTS go directly to the Photo Album app on your iPhone. You also have the option to put photos in a selected Album in Photo Album.
- Synced Shutter Button.
The shutter on the Hasselblad camera is synced with the iPhone camera. The shutter is triggered by the iPhone’s gyro sensor. The gyro sensor detects the Hasselblad camera shutter vibration and triggers the shutter on the HASSELNUTS app.
Due to the distinct vibration that Hasselblad cameras make when the shutter is triggered, the iPhone simply detects this vibration and triggers its own shutter.
- Automatically Crop and Flip The Picture.
When you take a picture with Hasselblad cameras, the images seen through the viewfinder are horizontally reversed due to the images being reflected on the projection screen. Using HASSELNUTS, the iPhone automatically flips the image to the regular direction. The images are then cropped to the format that you choose in the HASSELNUTS setting. The standard medium size of 6:6 is available in addition to 4:3 and 3:2 formats.
- Manual Exposure and Aperture Control.
HASSELNUTS can collaborate with the Hasselblad basic function for manual exposure and aperture control. Currently there is a limit with the iOS and unfortunately the shutter speed cannot be controlled manually. As long as the iOS gets updated though, we may be able to make this possible in the future.
Compatibility: Cradle and application* compatible with iPhone4s, iPhone5. *HASSELNUTS application will be available from the App store.

HASSELNUTS Keeps Evolving
We will keep improving HASSELNUTS as we see changes in demands and see room for improvement. We are hoping to add a video recording function to HASSELNUTS in the near future. Imagine being able to record footage with the classic camera! In addition, as the iPhone specs change, we have the ability to improve the quality of images HASSELNUTS can produce. However, these are all dependant on funding, so the more support we are able to get through Kickstarter, the more likely we can make these a reality!
Up until this point, we have only been able to make samples and prototypes to test out our product. Starting with Kickstarter, we are launching this product into the world! By investing in HASSELNUTS on Kickstarter, you are helping the funding of the following:
- Manufacture cost of the first production of HASSELNUTS
- Costs to cover the patent fee
- Developmental costs for future improvements on the optimized wide conversion lens, the groundglass lens, HASSELNUTS app function, and overall quality
By pledging $199, you will receive the discounted price only available for Kickstarter backers. Once Kickstarter is successfully funded and our initial products are delivered to our backers, HASSELNUTS will be available for purchase on our website www.badasscameras.com for future buyers at the full retail price of $349.
With that being said, every bit of amount counts to make HASSELNUTS available to everyone. Let’s make this happen together!
We are a small, independent company named AMBIVALENT who have a passion for art, technology, and communication! We are composed of designers and programmers from Japan, India, Korea and the U.S. HASSELNUTS was also made possible thanks to the cooperation of various vendors and tool makers.

Q : Does HASSELNUTS only work for the Hasselblad V system cameras or can it be used on any other single reflex medium format cameras?
A : HASSELNUTS works only with the V system, however, the concept can be used for other single reflex and double lens cameras. We are currently focusing on marketing our HASSELNUTS, and once we succeed with this project, we are going to move on to other systems.
A : No, unfortunately, the current version works only with iPhone 4S or 5 series. But in the future we hope to expand to other smartphones too!
A : Yes, as long as the system is compatible with the lens, HASSELNUTS can be used with any V mount lens.
A : There are slight size differences between the iPhone 4S and 5. However, since HASSELNUTS uses slide-lock cushions which fills the gap between the two types of iPhone, both iPhones fit tightly and securely.
A : It is made of ABS plastic with chrome plated painting.
A : No, unfortunately, we are only making the chrome plated painting version for now, but if there are sufficient requests, we will make black painted version as well.
A : We don't have one, so can't say for sure but I assume they do not fit with HASSELNUTS.
A : We never tried it, however if 203/205 takes a 500's film back there is highly chance it will fit and work fine.
A : Yes, it can be removed. The plates which holds a projection screen is screwed down with some screws and it can be easily removed by screwdriver.
A : HASSELNUTS App probably won't detect the vibration.
If you want to use mirror lock up, you probably want to try firing shutter by the buttons on the iPhone. The volume buttons on iPhone are shutter button as well, or if you are using iPhone5 then you might want to try earphone controller, it can be used as shutter release button.
A : I checked the size of the iPhone5s and yes, "5s" is almost same size as the old "5", so there should not be a problem. The "5c" is little wider (0.6mm) than the "5" and "5s" but it should not be a problem as well.
A : No, ISO is depending on the iPhone. We have no control over it.
In the future iOS, it could be available but we have no option right now.
