About this project
The Infinite Black was created nearly a decade ago and became an instant cult classic enjoyed by over one-million players worldwide! It was the first real-time online game to bridge the divide between all major desktop and mobile platforms, spawning a diverse community from around the world that is still thriving today!
The time has come to rejuvenate our beloved online space adventure with a powerful new game engine using the latest in graphics and network technology!
The Infinite Black Expansion will build upon the existing game players know and love with a new client interface, beautiful 3D graphics, thousands of enemies, an item crafting system, improved AI, challenging boss fights, and tons of other features requested by players over the past decade!
Veteran captains joining the expansion will have access to ships and equipment they already own, while new players can kick-start their first day with exclusive backer rewards!
A single cross-platform server will host all players with launch-day support for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS! Fleet up once again to join your friends in the expanded universe, no matter what device, with new invasions, enemy corporation raids, missions, bounty hunting, space exploration, and more!
The original static 80x80 sector map will be replaced with an expanded universe that comes to life with 50 or more custom maps designed by players and dungeon masters! Each map is a unique solar system stuffed with asteroids, nebula, planets to explore, and enemies to destroy!
Solar systems will be connected to each other through a network of Jump Gates, which are portals built by the various alien factions. A few hidden gates are ancient Precursor artifacts that lead to exotic and dangerous rift worlds for advanced captains to risk exploring for powerful treasures!
Players can unlock over 70 different ship classes from many alien or human factions! Each ship has unique new game mechanics, and can be customized with colored skins, decals, engine effects, and other vanity options.
Kickstarter backers will gain exclusive retro ships that use 3D models from the original game client so you can dwell in the past forever! These ships are a valuable commodity that can be sold or traded to other players, and will not be available outside of special events.
All backers at 'The Flayer Tier' or higher receive The Tech Despoiler -- A large ship with a natural Technician bonus, allowing it to remove Grapple or other harmful effects from friendly units! This is a unique ability not available outside of kickstarter!
The Retro Flagship comes with a permanent Marauder Technology Bonus granting it +5% Damage against all defensive installations like Garrisons, Outposts, and Planets.
Hundreds of feature requests have been made over the years and we've picked the best to implement first!
Most of these ideas will be introduced through new item types such as Drones, Shield Generators, and Batteries. There will also be new Engines, Weapons, and Computers to augment the vast array of additional ship classes.
Mechanics Update Example: Players will be able to equip multiple weapons to their ships instead of a single item! Weapons will draw energy from the ship's battery, which regenerates over time, allowing for new combat and load-out strategies, while also making the game much more exciting and action-packed!
The updated user interface will show actual combat between 3D ships in the sector map, add floating damage text, and make visualization of events easier to understand.
Kickstarter backers will have the exclusive opportunity to guide development of the new client with their feedback during alpha and beta testing.

Risks and challenges
This project will modernize our flagship game, The Infinite Black, which started development in 2008 and has been online for nearly a decade.
Funds raised through Kickstarter will pay for development costs to re-write server code from Java to C#, create a new client with the Unity3D game engine, and new art assets. Once complete, we can introduce new content and features based on Stretch Goal funding.
Our lead developer is intimately familiar with every aspect of the game's code and will be very efficient with implementation. We expect a playable internal prototype by the time this Kickstarter ends, with a closed alpha test several weeks later.
Our artists have decades of experience in video game development, and are already creating the new content.
The risks are minimal assuming funding goals are met. We have a fixed cost schedule, time-tested development patterns, and a proven history of exceptional product delivery.
Our previous Kickstarter, Heroes of Dire, was successfully funded in 2016. The game launched exactly as promised, is highly rated, and delivered far more than promised. The inception-to-release cycle took approximately one year. The Infinite Black is an existing game, so our risks and time requirements are much less.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
