About this project
Massive alien machines of pure death were poised just beyond the rim of our solar system and like fools we reached out in friendship, begging for annihilation.
Now they're here, threatening to implode the sun and eradicate humanity unless we comply with their depraved demands of flesh, violence, and pain!
The Infinite Black 2 is a new online tactical role-playing adventure where you command fleets of ships through strategic turn-based battles to slaughter aliens and conquer solar systems for your corporation!
The Infinite Black was created nearly a decade ago and became an instant cult classic enjoyed by over one-million players worldwide! It is one of the first online games to bridge the divide between all desktop and mobile platforms, bringing together a diverse community that spawned many real-life weddings, pregnancies, divorces, parking lot brawls, and maybe a few stints in jail.
We're taking everything that made the original so amazing, but powering it up with a custom massively-multiplayer game engine and the latest technology! The Infinite Black 2 will be a familiar universe to our veteran players, but is an entirely new and unique interpretation not intended to replace the first game, which continues to have a vibrant and thriving community!
Cross-platform servers will once again bring together a multitude of people, with launch-day support for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS! No matter what system, all of your friends can play through missions, fight invasions, raid enemy corporate garrisons, and gamble on tournaments together!
Players will become part of the story as live Dungeon Masters craft custom events in real-time, and evolve future development with daily staff discussion in chat!
All backers will receive a promo code for the original game to redeem a valuable gift. In the coming months we will announce a new feature linking the first game with the second, allowing corporations in one to take actions and influence the other. This also provides a great benefit to veteran players, even if they don't like the new game.
You will also receive a free digital copy of The Infinite Black 2, special player titles, and community awards such as unique ships and paint skins that will not be offered later! We don't sell post-Kickstarter "slacker backer" packages -- You will have exclusive rewards with real value that demonstrate how wise and intelligent you were to support the game!
Each tier of support comes with a pile of Credits to "kick start" your first day in The Infinite Black 2! They are used to repair damaged equipment, bid on auctions, hire ships, expand storage space, grow your Corporation, and gamble on tournaments. Players can also earn Credits by doing missions, selling items, fighting invasions, and collecting bounties.
Gameplay in The Infinite Black 2 is centered around fleets of ships deployed to solar systems throughout the universe.
Each fleet is a collection of ships that fight together when joining combat in strategic turn-basedbattlefields. There will be many ship classes and factions ranging from tiny fighters to massive planet-crushing dreadnoughts! Each ship has strengths and weaknesses that can be exploited or augmented through tactics and equipment decisions. Players discover new ships and equipment as loot by winning a battle, hunting down bounties, or with research and engineering.
At the head of your fleet is The Flagship -- A powerful command vessel with flexible mount-point utility allowing it to act in any role from front-line offense to long-range missile assault, or running support with advanced nano-repair technology.
Corporations are a social group of like-minded players working together towards common goals such as gathering resources, researching technology, engineering equipment, or the complete and total annihilation of all other life!
Players may create new corporations and deploy their corporate garrison to any suitable solar system. The garrison acts as a social and military hub where technology is researched, defenses are established, and territory is controlled. Enemy corporations can raid other garrisons to steal research or disable their technology!
All corporation members take part in Corporate Quests to earn items and Corporate Credits used to expand the Garrison.
Players own a reserve of ships that are deployed in fleets via jump gates around the galaxy. Each ship can be customized in great detail with unique color combos, skin patterns, engine effects, and decals. Ships may come in hundreds of configurations with origins in one of the many factions of human or alien races. Each faction has a unique visual style, as well as strategic strengths and weaknesses.
Every item and ship is procedurally generated! No two are ever the same!
Weapons, engines, armor, shields, and computers are discovered as loot or crafted via engineering, and can be equipped to your ships or sold on the player-driven auction market. There are no NPC merchants for selling your items -- Players set the value and dictate the economy.
Risks and challenges
We successfully completed a Kickstarter campaign in 2016 for Heroes of Dire -- A dark fantasy online game with similar risks. The project was delivered on time, with significantly more features than initially promised, and development continues today with new features added often.
"The Pit" is our custom MMO game engine created specifically with The Infinite Black 2 in mind. It has already been proven in the wild with Heroes of Dire, where all the hard technical and deployment problems were solved.
We have self-funded the initial development costs of The Infinite Black 2, and assuming we can reach our (very) reasonable funding goals, the chance of failure at this point is low. We've built a proven game engine and just need to cover a few months of operating costs to keep the lights on while it's finished.
Spellbook has secured the www.TIB2.com website and registered the The Infinite Black trademark. The costs of operation are fixed, known, and manageable. A steady playerbase of ~400 players is expected to break even on one server, with deployment to Steam marketplace alone providing at least 1,000 players.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
