We've been successfully funded! Huge thanks to all who backed us, shared the project, and spread the excitement. We couldn't have done it without you! Follow Great Northern's journey from inspiration to printed book on our website, greatnorthernknits.com.
The mystery, beauty, complexity, and oddity of Twin Peaks made it a remarkable show; it was groundbreaking and unusual, and filled with impressive mise en scene that swung between the horrifying and the totally funny. Great Northern is a collection of knitwear designs inspired by this fantastic show.
Who are We?
We’re Leah Coccari-Swift and Teresa Gregorio, knitwear designers who focus on bold, and sometimes unusual, garments and accessories for women. We’ve been published in a variety of venues including Knitscene, Interweave, Holla Knits, Knit Picks, and Creative Knitting. We have years of experience under our belts designing for publications and independently as well.
What is Great Northern?
Great Northern is a collection of knitwear designs created by Leah and Teresa. Each of the 10 sweaters and various accessories and home goods draws inspiration from the television show Twin Peaks. From specific characters like Audrey, Norma, and the Log Lady, to aesthetics and symbolism, each pattern has been created to harmonize with the overall spirit of the show. The purpose of this Kickstarter is to help offset the production costs of PRINTING the book itself. There will be an ebook version as well. We are planning to have both print and ebook versions published by September 2016.
Why back our Kickstarter?
We’re experienced independent designers: Leah and Teresa are both Twin Peaks fans who have extensive experience designing garments and accessories for women. Our individual styles reflect both each other and the much-loved oddity of the show itself.
You want to support independent fiber folks: We’re working with other independent, fiber-related creatives including dyers, tech editors, graphic designers, and more!
You’re interested in keeping the printed book alive: Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE ebooks. In fact, Great Northern will have an ebook version too! But there’s something wonderful about the physical object of a book. Backing kickstarters like ours help keep small-run, independent books alive and encourage others to create more niche content and produce more books!
You love Twin Peaks: Well yah! We’d like to think that even if you’re not a knitter then this book will appeal to you. We’re working with a very talented independent graphic designer to create a book that will be an attractive item itself.
You love knits with a vintage flair: Twin Peaks was thoughtfully created, with a time-capsule feel that hearkened back to a vintage, mid-century America through various sets and characters’ costumes. Our designs reflect this stylistic sensibility, with Audrey-inspired cardigans, pullovers with a classically tailored look, retro-vibe cowichan-esque sweaters, and more!
What’s the money going to?
Printing: The largest piece of the budget pie is devoted to printing.
Tech Editing: Any pattern worth its salt is rigorously tech edited! Formatting/Layout/Graphic Design: We want to create a book that not only gives you beautiful patterns, but is beautiful itself.
Shipping: not the most attractive of budget lines, but we have to get the books from the printers to us, and then from us to you!
Photography: including models, outfits, travel, and of course paying the photographer!
Prize fulfillment: check out those incentives!
Now-Jan 2016: Design our patterns and get them set for tech editing and testing.
Feb – Mar 2016: Coordinate test knitters, with a cushion of time for any design-related surprises Organize all notes for patterns and send to tech editor
March - April 2016: Work with tech editor on patterns Organize models/outfits/shots lists for photo shoot Send any completed files to graphic designer
May 2016: photography
June 2016: Finalize all files; edit, edit, edit!
July 2016: send book to the printers
August 2016: organize book shipping to individuals who have pre-ordered
September 2016: ship out
Risks and challenges
While we are experienced designers who have worked for many years to produce independently published work, neither of us have created our own printed book. We are prepared with some great mentors, and have the big pieces of the puzzle lined up (professional tech editor, photographer, models, printer, graphic designer, photo shoot location, designs and yarn support). We are confident that we have what it takes to put this collection together. We believe in this project and know that if you put your trust in us we will not let you down!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
