Hello! I'm Will and I really need your help to make a very special film.
For the past 7 years I've been continuously grabbing whatever camera I can, throwing people in front of it, forcing them to laugh/shout/cry and making 'films'... at least, I called them films. I've been a writer/director for the past 3 years and have had multiple films selected for film festivals across the UK and have been a part of even more films that have gone on to be very successful, including selection in the Buffer Film Festival, in Toronto.
To keep it short, I've been hard at work at university for the past three years and the time has come to culminate all that work and effort into one final film. I've got a project in the pipeline and I'm now ready to make it, there's only one thing standing in my way.. money. But what is the film about, I hear you say?
The idea is simply a film to represent the socially and politically isolated in society, following the story of Celia and Jerry Goose: a female with Downs Syndrome and a male in the early stages of ALS.
"Top Down" is a dark comedy that follows Jerry and Celia's story as the local council attempts to evict them. With time running out they are facing possible separation and strange new surroundings. In a bid to strike back Jerry enlists Celia’s help to begin a 'top-down reorganisation' of the ‘system’ that has failed them, and they're ready to sacrifice everything to do so.
This film has been in the heads of myself and writer Jonathan East, for a while now and we are desperate to get it out on to the big screen. The message of the film "when you can't look after yourself, you look after each other" has never been so pertinent in life as it is now-a-days. Politically the world has forgotten it's most vulnerable, evidenced by food banks, viral videos of disabled people living in unsuitable accommodation, homelessness rates sky-rocketing... and so on. This film aims to put that ugly part of humanity on show, and show what could happen if people ever decided to fight back.. big time.
Want proof? Alex is one of the many who suffer today because of human negligence, with her story being reported by The Guardian during the 2017 general election. Ever since watching videos such as Alex's story (Click on the thumbnail to watch the video), I knew we'd gone too far and needed opinions and mindsets to change.
So by now you can probably tell I'm rather passionate about this story, so of course I have hand-selected the crew helping me to bring this story to life, here some of the chosen few:
- Will Garrood (Me) - Director
- Jonathan East - Writer
- Elisa Spigariol - Producer
- Ana Krkljus - Director of Photography
- Maisie Buck - 1st Assistant Director
- Matt Ley - Art Director
- Rebecca Winkler - Casting Director
- Alex Stuart - Editor
Films are–unfortunately–an incredibly expensive venture. With funding required for all departments that are vital to the success of a film. The goal for this project is £2000, this is a minimised total that will be able to–at the very least–make the film.
Here's a handy breakdown:
This budget is also lower due to a lot of favours and deals being struck with location owners and rental houses who have been kind enough to reduce the rate for a local short film.
If we were to luckily go over our goal we would be able to pretty much upgrade every sector of production, and also have a larger contingency for unexpected problems. Finally if we raise enough there are talks of a special screening night for cast, crew and select backers!
Well now it's up to you! If you're as passionate as I am about this project and it's message then give what you can to try and help it become a reality. We really want to make a statement and leave a mark with this film. Obviously if you do back, you'll have the rewards you've pledged for sent out to you once the film has been completed.
Speaking of which, when the film is finally finished and we've watched the final online cut and I give it the thumbs up, what then? Well that's where the fun begins, we start sending it in to festivals (and of course to those lovely backers who get it in their rewards). We're aiming high this time, looking to really make sure as many people as possible see this film.
Thank you for giving me your time to read this,
Risks and challenges
All films are fraught with potential errors and hiccups, but the crew I have selected are all capable, experienced and trustworthy and together we can overcome pretty much anything.
Come rain or shine, sickness or health, our schedule is adaptable and we have back-up crew members in place if things go wrong.
Locations and actors may fall through, however we have the ingenuity and know-how of how to secure a new places and actors (and have contingencies in place) in the unlikely event that happens.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
