About

Artist Nicolas Holiber, in partnership with NYC Audubon, Broadway Mall Association, NYC Parks, and Gitler &_______ Gallery, presents Nicolas Holiber: Birds on Broadway, the world premiere of the Audubon Sculpture Project. This public art exhibition will raise awareness for bird species whose existence is threatened by climate change, while also bringing beauty to the urban landscape.

Stretching from 64th Street north to 166th Street in Manhattan, the exhibition will display sculptures in prominent locations on the median that bisects Broadway, called the Broadway Malls. Holiber is the youngest artist ever to have a solo exhibition on the malls and this will be one of the largest to date.

For this project, Holiber is making 12 gigantic wooden sculptures of birds, all of which are under serious threat due to climate change. The birds featured in this exhibition are native to New York City, or pass through the five boroughs on their migration routes. The artist specifically chose these birds because they are beautiful, diverse, and will be powerful ambassadors for the hundreds of other species that face an uncertain future.

Each sculpture will be made out of 100% reclaimed or recycled wood. Through a partnership with Big Reuse, the artist will receive salvaged lumber to be used for each bird. Holiber will also reprocess found wood from around the streets of New York City. Additionally, sponsorship for all of the hardware needed to build the sculptures has been provided by Marjam Supply Company.

Why are these birds important? Because they come from a group identified in the National Audubon Society Birds & Climate Change Report, which revealed that 314 species—nearly half of all North American birds—will be imperiled over the coming decades due to shifting and contracting habitat zones as a result of global warming. Each sculpture will be accompanied by information on that specific bird, the threats it faces, and what concerned viewers can do to help.

Check out the artist's renderings for each sculpture below! The 12 birds are: Red-necked Grebe, Peregrine Falcon, American Bittern, Scarlet Tanager, Brant Goose, Double-crested Cormorant, Common Goldeneye, Hairy Woodpecker, Hooded Merganser, Snowy Owl, Wood Duck, and Merlin.

The sculptures will be installed in late April 2019 and will be on view until December 2019. With your help we can bring this project to life! Your support will go directly towards the fabrication, production, transportation, installation, and removal of these sculptures.

There will be an official ribbon cutting ceremony for Nicolas Holiber: Birds on Broadway, Audubon Sculpture Project, in NYC in late April 2019. This will be open to the public and we do hope to see you there! The exact date will be announced soon.

New York City Audubon, a 501(c)(3) organization, is the fiscal sponsor for this project. Backers will receive tax deductions for their donation within the limits prescribed by law.

Additional Info:

Nicolas Holiber: Birds on Broadway, Audubon Sculpture Project has several important presenting partners:

New York City Audubon champions nature and wild birds. It is an independent grassroots organization affiliated with the National Audubon Society as the local chapter for the five boroughs. Through scientific research, habitat restoration, conservation advocacy, educational outreach, and engaging programs, NYC Audubon works to conserve urban habitats around New York Harbor and across the cityscape, to raise awareness of the hazards of light and glass for migrating birds, and to connect people with nature.

For over 30 years, the Broadway Mall Association (BMA) has worked to beautify and maintain the verdant malls in the center of Broadway from 70th Street to 168th Street. Today, BMA remains committed to the vision of the malls as a beautiful stretch of greenery uniting the diverse neighborhoods along Broadway. To maintain the 10.6-acre parkland, BMA oversees the landscape design and the horticulture elements of the malls, and provides watering and sanitation to supplement services provided by NYC Parks. Each year, BMA decorates many malls with sparkling, reusable LED lights during the dark winter months and stages world-class exhibitions of contemporary art, such as Nicolas Holiber: Birds on Broadway, Audubon Sculpture Project.

NYC Parks For over 50 years, NYC Parks’ Art in the Parks program has brought contemporary public artworks to the city’s parks, making New York City one of the world’s largest open-air galleries. The agency has consistently fostered the creation and installation of temporary public art in parks throughout the five boroughs. Since 1967, NYC Parks has collaborated with arts organizations and artists to produce over 2,000 public artworks by 1,300 notable and emerging artists in over 200 parks. For more information about the program visit www.nyc.gov/parks/art.

Gitler &_____ is an art gallery dedicated to showcasing rising artists from around the world. The gallery moves regularly between genres to expose and celebrate the original work of craftspeople and artistic visionaries whose conceptual and technical narratives help bring a fresh perspective to the canon. The artwork is brought to light through pop-up shows, performances, public interventions, and traditional exhibitions held in the gallery's uptown space in Hamilton Heights.

Risks and challenges

The proposal and designs for Nicolas Holiber: Birds on Broadway, Audubon Sculpture Project have been approved and authorized by both the Broadway Mall Association and NYC Parks.

This project does not come without its own unique risks and challenges. First and foremost is the amount of work required to make each sculpture. 12 enormous sculptures in less than 12 months is a huge undertaking for any artist, and Holiber is working alone with only one part-time assistant. He will be devoting the next year of his life to this project. It will be a marathon for the artist, but we are confident that every bird will be completed to the fullest, ensuring a beautiful and powerful exhibition.

Studio space in NYC is very expensive and right now Holiber is lucky enough to be working in a temporary, donated space. However, this could change at any moment on a week's notice. If he does have to move out of his current workplace and search for a new one, it will interrupt production and make things harder. With the help of this Kickstarter to raise funds in case that happens, we are confident we will be able to make the deadline of April 2019.
