WHY THERE'S A NEED FOR THIS BOOK
Although death is a natural and inevitable part of life, most adults struggle to talk openly about it with each other - let alone with children. It seems to have become a taboo. As a result, picture books about death and grief are very rare. With this Kickstarter, I hope to help make grief a more accessible topic.
Two years ago a young mother asked me at a local Christmas Fair whether we had any picture books which could help her explain her child that she didn’t have long to live. To my despair, I couldn’t offer her the right book. I never saw this mum again, and ever since that day I’ve been exploring how we could create a picture book about grief ourselves.
A year later I met Jayde Perkin at the Bristol Comic and Zine Fair. Jayde is a local illustrator and comics artist, who has been exploring the theme of grief in her autobiographical comics.
When her mum died of cancer, Jayde’s world turned completely upside down. Creating comics became a cathartic process for her and helped her understand all the feelings she was experiencing.
Once I had read Jayde's comics I felt confident she could write and illustrate a picture book about grief, based on her own experiences.
In Mum’s Jumper Jayde tells the story of a little girl who loses her mum and has to learn how to keep going. Although her dad is there to support and comfort her, she’s feeling very lonely – and angry.
Through adopting her mum's jumper, she discovers that grief is something she will learn not just to live with, but to grow with, and that there can be a way to feel hope for the future whilst living with loss.
We hope that Mum’s Jumper can act somewhat as a guide to grief, showing that grief doesn't just go away, or get smaller over time. Grief stays with us, but with time, we grow, we learn, and we experience new things. Our grief is still there, but our world around it is bigger.
This book can also be used as a tool to introduce children to the concept of death, even if they haven’t yet experienced it. Thanks to Jayde’s colourful and warm-hearted illustrations we mean to make grief a little bit easier to talk about – both for children and for adults.

WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
By backing our project you’ll be helping us publish a picture book that would not find such a large audience were it to be marketed and sold using traditional publishing channels.
This is a story that has the power to make a big difference. We think it’s really important that it gets the best chance of reaching as many people as possible. By asking you to get involved directly with the publishing journey and to share our campaign with readers you think will love it, we can make this happen.

Risks and challenges
While this is Book Island’s first Kickstarter ever, I’m not new to publishing. In fact, 'Mum’s Jumper' will be Book Island’s 33rd picture book.
In the past seven years I’ve certainly learned to budget and plan. I have a strong working relationship with our Latvian printer, who’s always been very professional and reliable. All the artwork is finished and laid out. As soon as the campaign finishes we will be able to send the book to print.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
