About this project
Particle Shield is a vibrant fast action tower defense game that takes you to the next level of thought provoking atomic destruction! At your disposal are current and future technologies providing you the ability to unleash the wrath of an accelerated railgun, electromagnetic pulses, prism laser technology, quantum computing and the option to tear the fabric of time and space by generating a black hole! Players must combat waves of inbound radioactive particles while managing a finite pool of resources across 37 engaging stages. Speed is necessary as particles adapt to the player’s decisions and are constantly seeking new paths to their objective. Flexible strategies allow players to overcome obstacles, which enhance the particles, and can create an uncontrollable chain reaction. Rise to the challenge and conquer the elements of Particle Shield.
Blending features and ideas spanning several game genres, Particle Shield adds a new flavor to the diverse market of tower defense games. Expanding on most tower defense games, Particle Shield introduces tower super abilities once a tower is upgraded to the maximum level. These incredibly powerful abilities allow game changing moments to be triggered at the players command. With the subtle implementation of science, players are exposed to various concepts and technologies within chemistry and physics. The intent is that players will subconsciously learn as they are engaged in play. Unique level design and special grid abilities make each stage challenging and rewarding. For example, if the player fails to account for the “splitting” grid, particles can quickly multiply and overwhelm the defenses. Conversely this same grid capability can be used on damaged particles to rapidly create a source of funding. This balance and the ability to dynamically craft the path for particles allows and endless number of solutions to achieve Particle Shield success.
Building games is becoming more widely accessible and affordable hobby. The transition from this being a hobby and becoming a profession is where the financial requirements erupt quickly! Fortunately, I’ve been able to create the backbone of Particle Shield while continuing to work my primary occupation. This has stretched the timeline for game completion but has allowed me to keep the game on a relatively low budget. Below is the general breakdown of projected and actual cost required to bring Particle Shield to the mass market!
Kickstarter Funding Breakdown
-IGF & IncieCade...............$155.00
-Greenlight Setup Fee........$100.00
-After Effects (Trailer).........$32.76
Particle Shield has been in development since August 2014. Various prototypes of the game were created, scrapped and refined to what you see today. Believe it or not, one of the original concepts was to have letters moving across a chalkboard. Continued testing and feedback from the community will shape the final product, and levels! Our development blog can be found on the IndieDB Particle Shield site.
The game started initial development and prototyping in August 2014. It started as one line and a sphere moving along it. A few weeks later that turned into a line with a sphere and a turret flailing on the wrong axis as it tried to shoot the sphere. Flash forward and toss in some learning pains and here we are today! The only date that matters now is the release date of October 31, 2015. The details of what occurs between now and then will be documented on the development blog and through social media.
It has been a lifelong vision to work within the game industry and I’ve finally had the chance and time to work towards my dream. It has been a lengthy and indirect path but nevertheless I am almost there! Though she is not listed as a team member, special thanks must go to my wife who has supported me through my arduous jobs as I plan the transition into the gaming industry. Thank you for being there for me!
Copy of the Game at Release – This should explain itself. A copy of the game will be made available to donors on the release date of October 31, 2015.
Your Name Posted Within the Game Credits – A section of Particle Shield will be dedicated to the names of the donors who contribute to the Pre-Beta and higher donor options. This section will likely be accessible straight from the main menu. Restrictions apply to the name submitted and will be subject to our approval. Names should consist of First, Middle, Last. Middle name or middle initial can be blank or replaced with appropriate gamertags (example Joe “BigD4wG” Bob).
Your Name Posted on the Particle Shield Website – Similar to the award above as far as restrictions, but you can expect to see your name in the game and on the Particle Shield page as a separate screenshot. This reward is available to Pre-Gamma and higher donors.
Electronic Game Development Guide – This reward will consist of numerous tips and tricks for how to build a game on zero budget. The game elements of Particle Shield cost nothing. No joke, it was constructed entirely free (and the tools used to create it were free). This guide will provide the details on the tools and techniques used to help motivate an aspiring developer to create their own game from the ground up. Considering this is a higher level reward, I will make it well worth the investment and am up to providing whatever details you are looking for! Submit comments if you have specific questions or topics you want me to detail! I’m anticipating this electronic document will consist of 10-15 pages of content.
Design a Level with the Creator – This is exactly what it sounds like! I will provide you the grid with a few rules and you will get to design the wall placement, special hexagon placement, start/finish, etc. Predetermine whichever turrets you want to have available and control the waves! This will be a collaborative process as I must ensure that winners don’t create evil levels of instant failure or levels that are simply too easy. Once the level is created I will send you a video of it in action, or provide feedback on it being too difficult or too easy with recommended tweaks. Once satisfied with the outcome you can expect to see your very own level in the Particle Shield release!
Risks and challenges
Every project has risks. Fortunately for Particle Shield I took care of most of them already. The trailer you see with the game shows actual game footage of the latest build. It has been stress tested heavily and all the bugs which currently exist (minus one very unique bug) are aesthetic in nature. Getting to this point has been a journey but I can assure you that this game runs great and will only get better from here. The biggest risk I can forecast is having the marketing campaign tank due to a lack of visibility. I’m doing what I can do prevent this from happening and the additional funding will allow me to conduct targeted advertising and get the word out to the masses.
Outside of my concerns for the effective marketing campaign, the biggest remaining risk would be the successful porting of the title to mobile platforms. I have most of the elements in place for an effective transition but this move from mouse clicks to touch screen will require some unique tweaking which I am prepared to tackle. Moving Particle Shield to mobile isn’t a question of if, but when! Luckily I have an abundance of resources at my disposal to aid me through the process.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
