About

As far as we are aware, this is the first event of it's kind here in Ramsbottom and where ever possible we are featuring local writers, poets, actors and artists. We the organisers have been blown away to find how many talented and in some cases fairly well known writers and performers live locally. We are a fully constituted community group and a volunteer accountant from Horsefield & Smith is overseeing the money side of thing.

There will be live performances, readings, workshops, exhibitions and theatre as part of the festival, which has joined forces with the the Grants Hotel, ELR, Churches Together Ramsbottom, Ramsbottom Lbrary and several local pubs & cafes to provide an inspirational day of culture for the town.

We need to raise money to pay for the main venue, insurances, publicity and materials, as the events (with the exception of the plays and the Cafe Noir) will free of charge. Where a charge has to be made, it has been kept as low as possible because we want to open the experience up to all local people and children, not just those with comfortable disposable incomes. The event organisers and staff are all working as volunteers.

Warming up with open mic night on 28th October at the Hare and Hounds, the Festival takes place on Saturday 21st November from 10 till midnight:

We already have booked ...

Live Shakespeare in the Civic Hall.

Literary performances by writer and poets in the ballroom at the Grants Hotel all day, followed in the evening by a 'Cafe Noir' - where poetry meets burlesque (adults only).

Storytelling and children's activities in the Library.

Meet the authors sessions and live readings in Owens and Lolos.

and much much more still to be finalised. We have performance space being offered in St Paul's Church and other local businesses and are being careful to try to achieve a 'good fit' of performers to venues.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge we face is not enough public turning up on the day to make it a success from the point of view of the performers. We are using social media to reach out to the local community and beyond, as well as having a website (www.rammylitfest.com), paper based PR materials and also having the local press already onside.

We face competition from the already established festivals in Manchester, but these draw big names and charge equally big ticket prices, putting most things beyond the reach of local people managing on a 'living wage'. We wanted to do things the other way about and make a festival that performers want to be part of because we aim to be inclusive not because they can command enormous fees for being here. We want to inspire the next generation to let their creative side blossom and we want to put Ramsbottom on the map for something other than good food and steam trains.

This is our first attempt at a festival. It grew out of the very successful Writers Circle that was set up in 2014. We have had tremendous support and advice from experienced event organisers in Bolton, Salford and Manchester. If it works, we will come back bigger and better next year! If it doesn't ... then we will come back bigger and better next year!
