We started Awestomy, ostomy undergarments, in July of 2012 to provide ostomates with fashionable undergarments to give them security & confidence. Over the past year our business has really caught hold in the ostomy community, and we have been both amazed and humbled by what our customers have said about how our products have helped them take back their lives. We began Awestomy on the premise that we wanted to make garments for people with as much humor, sarcasm and love as we both have for each other. We wanted our customer to feel confident and comfortable to just be themselves in any situation. When we began our business, we wanted to start something that matters and that would make a difference.
What is an ostomy?
An ostomy refers to the surgically created opening in the body for the discharge of bodily wastes. A stoma is the actual end of the ostomy that can be seen protruding through the abdominal wall. Individuals can have an ostomy for many reasons including injury and diseases such as Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Once an ostomy has been placed a patient has a disposable pouching system that collects the waste output.
This project's goal
This project's goal is in three distinct phases:
1.) This will allow us to create our first automated run through a high end production house. The money will go toward meeting our minimum requirements for our booty shorts & wraps. We are now to the point where our product demand is high enough to need to utilize them.
2.) Aid in the reasearch & development of new lines of ostomy clothing, such as swimwear, activewear and additional undergarments.
3.) Give us the means to do a bold marketing campaign through print & social media targeting a wider audience, specialty pharmacies and Wound & Ostomy Care Nurses (WOCNs).

Risks and challenges
It has been an interesting journey so far. We have already overcome many obstacles to get to this point but the most challenging one was finding a designer and a manufacturer that was willing to take on the unique challenge of creating a cute, fun and fashionable product for men and women with ostomy bags.
Being a small but growing business it can be hard to find a quality production company to fulfill our needs without the sacrifice of a slow turnaround. We are finally at the demand level we need to utilize a quality production house with a quick turnaround but need this project to pay for the initial cost of our first run of production with them.
We feel like there are always going to be designs that work for some people and some that don't work at all. This is because an ostomy can be located in many areas of the abdomen. Each case is unique. I think the challenge is taking in all of that advice and critiques to create a variety of products that can help everyone.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
