The Secret Order of the Libertines is an experiment in combining art and intimacy. It combines staged performances in spoken word, song, and movement with private one-on-one readings of poetry, creating an intimate environment that shatters theatre's fourth wall.
As such, it requires a certain atmosphere and space to have the desired impact on the audience, and a small enough crowd to allow everyone in the audience to experience the private performances. Grasso's Magic Theatre provides the perfect combination of an intimate setting, a classy ambiance, and old world charm, along with the requisite accoutrements for a performance.
This campaign will partially underwrite such fundamental expenses as the theater rental that are necessary for creating the appropriate atmosphere for the production.
Fringe productions are often a labor of love, commitment and conviction. This one is no different. It is a self-funded performance, with two self-employed single Moms as producers. As women raising daughters, we know firsthand the importance of sparking new ways to address issues of sensuality and sexuality, and of creating new models for sharing that go beyond objectification, and into the realm of truth and vulnerability. We also know the power of art, literature and theatre to give people a new understanding of a very old subject.
Our hope is that this production launches a new form of eroticism, where honest sharing becomes the norm, not the exception, and forms the basis for a new sexual revolution. One based in intimacy, truth, and love...above all else. The Secret Order of the Libertines: An Intimate Revolution is scheduled for performances in the 2012 Philly Fringe Festival on Sept 12 at 8pm, Sept 15 at 7pm and 10pm, and Sept 20 at 8pm. It features graduates from The Essensual Experience, the local trio The Femme-Mynistiques, and introduces The Poetry Brothel (tm) to the Philadelphia area.
