The last member of given species is called an Endling. During the last century or so, awareness of our impact on the animals we share our world with has grown, and so has our willingness to help conserve the animals that are in danger of disappearing forever. Unfortunately for many animals, we recognized their plight too late. I want to commemorate some of these Endlings in enamel pins.

Benjamin - the last Thylacine, or "tasmanian tiger," who died in a zoo in 1936. Thylacines were unique  because while they looked a lot like a canine, they were, in fact, the largest living carnivorous marsupial of the time. The government put a bounty on thylacines out of fear that they would prey on livestock, and this devastated their population.

The pin shows Benjamin in front of some Coast Banksia, a plant that still exists on Mainland Australia, but is extinct in Tasmania, just like the thylacine. Benjamin is a soft-enamel pin, plated in Antique Bronze with 10 different colors of enamel, measuring 1.75" wide.

Martha - the last Passenger Pigeon, died in 1914. At one time there were more passenger pigeons in North America than any other bird on the continent combined, and they would fly in flocks numbering the billions, blocking out the sun as they flew by. Because of this, it seemed like their numbers would never dwindle, and people hunted them by the thousands. By 1914, Martha was the last known one.

This pin shows Martha in front of oak leaves and a pigeon gun, invented specifically to hunt passenger pigeons. Martha's pin will be soft enamel, antique copper-plated, made with 9 enamel colors, and measuring 1.75" wide.

Lonesome George - The last Pinta Island Tortoise. These giant tortoises live on the Galapagos Islands, and, as the name suggests, the Pinta Island Tortoise lived on Pinta Island. Wildlife introduced to the islands by humans, specifically goats, devastated the vegetation of the islands, and by the time George was discovered, it was too late for the Pinta Island Tortoise. Since the 1970s, efforts were made to mate Lonesome George with tortoises from other islands in order to save some of his genes through hybrids, but no eggs ever hatched. Lonesome George died in 2012, taking his species with him.

George's pin will be a soft enamel pin, plated in antiqued nickel, 6 colors, and 1.75" tall.

All stretch goal pins unlocked! You can pick any of these pins for your reward!

  •  UNLOCKED $2000 - Incas, the last Carolina Parakeet. One of only two species of parrot native to the United States, the Carolina Parakeet lived on the East Coast of America. It was hunted widely for its colorful feathers. Incas actually shared his cage with Martha the Passenger Pigeon, and died in 1918. Incas is shown here eating cockleburs, a favorite plant of the parakeets! The pin will be made with 11 enamel colors and antiqued silver metal.
  •  UNLOCKED! $2500 - Turgi, the last known member of partula turgida, a type of Polynesian Land Snail. The snails were devastated by a microsporidian parasite, and Turgi was the last, dying in 1996. Turgi will be made in antiqued copper metal with four enamel colors and three pearlescent colors!
  •  UNLOCKED $3000 - Toughie, the last Rabb's fringed-limbed frog. They were discovered in Panama in 2005, formally described in 2008, and declared extinct in 2016. Toughie's pin will be antiqued nickel with three enamel colors and one screen print layer! Design subject to change.
  •  UNLOCKED $3500 - Booming Ben, the last Heath Hen. Heath Hens were found on scrublands along the East Coast of the United States, and were a very important source of food, even possibly being the meal of the first Thanksgivings instead of wild turkeys. They were hunted to extinction and Ben was the last, dying in 1932. The pin will be made with antique gold metal and 9 enamel colors!
  •  UNLOCKED $4000 - Celia, the last Pyrenean Ibex. Officially declared extinct in 2000 with the death of Celia, many efforts have been made bring the Pyrenean Ibex back via cloning. A clone of Celia was born in 2003, but unfortunately died shortly after birth. Celia will be made in antique nickel with seven enamel colors.
  •  UNLOCKED $4500 - Orange Band, the last Dusky Seaside Sparrow. Efforts were made to protect this little coastal sparrow, and several groups were brought into captivity to help conserve them. It didn't take, and although Orange Band lived to be extremely old for a sparrow and blind in one eye, he died on Discovery Island in Walt Disney World in 1987. Orange Band's pin will be made with antiqued nickel metal and five enamel colors!
  •  UNLOCKED $5000 - Najin and Fatu, the last Northern White Rhinos. Najin and her daughter Fatu are still alive! But unfortunately, they are the last, and the outlook isn't good for a comeback. Northern White Rhinos are functionally extinct.

Risks and challenges

This will be my 9th Kickstarter, and my fourth enamel pin Kickstarter. I will be making these pins through a trusted manufacturer, and risks are minimal! That said, unexpected problems do occur, but I am more than equipped to handle them. It generally only takes about a month from order for the pins to be made and shipped, depending on how many pins I order.
