About this project
Thank you to everyone involved in making this project a success, it's been an amazing couple of months.
If you've just found the lamp and like the look of it, you can order on our website: www.inertiaprojects.com
Thanks for checking out my project. I've been in the lighting business for just over two years now and this is my second product. The first, ‘Harvey’ was funded on kickstarter back in 2012 and can be viewed here (inertiaprojects.com), it was a big success and enabled me to quit the day job and work on my own products full time.
Since then I've been busy building Harvey’s, setting up a small workshop, making a website, trying to understanding internet marketing, learning accountancy, oh and designing new products of course.
The reason I'm back on kickstarter is pretty much the same as the first time around; launching a new product is expensive, there are many one off costs and also minimum order quantities from suppliers. For this project if we can make 100 lamps as the first run we’ll cover our costs and provide the world with a stylish new design.
The price shown is only for kickstarter, this is just what we need to get the new product to market. The retail price after we launch will be significantly higher so if you like the lamp, get in now.
Bank LED desk lamp:
This lamp is a modern take on the classic bankers lamp, the idea was to simplify the design as much as possible and include bright energy efficient LEDs. It's made from laser cut steel and aluminium, painted in white with a classic green shade. It also has an angle adjustable shade so the light can be directed where it’s needed.
Bank has super efficient Philips LEDs providing 740 lumens of warm white light (see spec. at bottom for more details). Country specific plugs will be added as we ship worldwide.
Finally, it comes with the old tried and trusted pull switch - after all, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
It's taken some time to produce and finalise the design here's some pics from along the way.
Developing the electronics was particularly challenging, hiding the wires and making sure the shade can pivot took some time. The custom flexi cable below was the key to ensuring the clean lines of this lamp.
• 740 lumens brightness (like an old 60W bulb) • 3000K colour temperature (warm white) • 50,000 hour minimum LED life • Angle adjustable shade • Precision laser cut parts • Convection airflow in head for heat dissipation • Weight 2.5KG • Energy efficiency A++ rated only 6 Watts • Country specific plug included.
How the funds will be used:
All funds will go directly towards the development and manufacturing of the lamp including; buying components and materials, building production tooling, manufacturing services, safety, testing and approval agency fees.
All of the design work has been completed by me here in Newcastle. The metal work is to be produced in the Yorkshire Dales (UK) by the company that made the best prototypes. The LEDs come from Philips in Germany. The switches and electronics will be provided by local suppliers.
- January - Final testing and sign off
- February - Laser cutting of metal work, electronics ordered
- March - Fabrication and painting of metal work
- April - Assembly, testing and packaging
- May - Happy customers with new shiny LED Bankers lamp!
I'm very excited about producing this lamp and having people use it. Designing products is my passion.
Risks and challenges
Moving from prototype to production can be difficult but I’ve done my best to test everything out a thoroughly as possible. My experience on other projects has taught me to leave nothing to chance and check, double check and re-check all the details.
I have built trust with a number of suppliers over the past 10 years. There may be some delays and hiccups along the way but we’ll keep you informed so you can see what fun manufacturing can be.
I am targeting delivery in May which allows four months to get the product to your door. That may seem like a long time, but it’s always tricky to make a brand new product and there’s bound to be something I’ve not thought of that will cause a delay.
