Original graphic novel about a smart but socially awkward girl who moves into a house haunted by the ghosts of five cute guys.
UPDATE5: WE MADE OUR STRETCH GOAL!
Thank you so much, everybody for helping us get this far! The new short comic will be available along with the PDF Polterguys Vol. 1 Companion provided to $15+ backers. N and I are truly grateful and indebted to all of you for your support of our humble project.
UPDATE4: $120 Reward Tier
My sincerest apologies for not catching this sooner! The reward indicates an "inked and colored" 9x12 drawing but should just be "inked." The full color drawing is reserved for the $160 Tier. So sorry for the confusion!
UPDATE3: NEW STRETCH GOAL
I've been looking into a new stretch goal now that we've hit 100%. If we reach $4,000, I'll write a new comic to be added to the extra PDF that will feature the ghosts and what they've been up to without Bree.
If you haven't had a chance to pledge yet, do consider backing our project!
Hi, guys! I'm Laurianne Uy and I created Polterguys, an urban fantasy series about a college girl who moves in with ghost housemates. I co-wrote this with my partner Nathan Go.
Polterguys Vol. 1 is the first self-contained story in this series (of six). I'm very excited and happy to say that this first book is finally completed and laid out. This Kickstarter project is to help fund the cost of printing and promoting volume one.
Bree, a nerdy and ambitious freshman, can't wait to start college. Shunned in high school for her single-minded devotion to her studies, she looks forward to an environment where brains trump social status. In her first week, she adjusts to college life but finds it hard to get along with her peers. After a fight with her roommate, she moves into an old house, only to find that it's haunted by the ghosts of five cute guys. Since she's the only one that can see these ghosts, she has to help them resolve their unfinished business.
You can read more about the Polterguys characters here on my website.
I'm currently sharing this comic on my website Laurbits.com and updating it every Saturday until June 29, my official publication day. You can also read about the process for creating this book and all the challenges involved in self-publishing on my blog.
Read some of the reviews from people who've followed the webcomic so far:
“Delightfully charming…a great spin on the typical harem style of manga story-telling…” -Examiner.com
“Fun fun fun…a light-hearted supernatural romp!” -Pro-Lithic Ramblings
"...[A] nostalgic reminder of some of my favorite shojou mangas, the ones I would stay up late reading in middle school and beyond." -ComicBooked.com
Why I'm Doing This
Polterguys is a culmination of my love for ‘90s paranormal movies, strong female characters in TV drama and “reverse-harem” manga. Ghost stories in movies that I watched as a kid usually featured men as protagonists so I wanted to write a story centered on a female lead this time. The kinds of female characters I’m drawn to include Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars: independent, strong-willed, resourceful and courageous women.
I am also writing the story in the tradition of “reverse-harems,” a popular trope in shojo manga (manga for girls) that are characterized by one female character surrounded by multiple male characters. Stand-outs in this genre, such as Fruits Basket and Ouran High School Host Club, are so memorable because of their rich character development and a balance of humor and pathos in the storytelling.
I wanted these elements in my story and felt they could work together organically in grounded, character-based urban fantasy. Polterguys is my tribute and contribution to the kinds of stories I love reading and watching the most.
You may also notice some places around UC Bayside (the fictional university in the book) look familiar! If you've ever hung out in Berkeley, CA you'll probably recognize certain landmarks and places drawn in Polterguys' pages. I used to live in the Bay Area and really loved the urban landscape. It's been fun incorporating these visual elements into the book.

Polterguys Vol. 1 will be printed on 60# Vellum paper with a cover treated with a matte finish. I wanted to have a book that could sit next to my favorite graphic novels so I decided to go with offset printing and heavier paper stock. All this will cost at least $3,000 including shipping, packaging, marketing and other related expenses.
I'm hoping to officially launch the book at Anime Expo (Los Angeles Convention Center, June 29 - Jul 2, 2012) where I will have a table at Artist Alley. Please stop by if you're attending! (Final table number to be confirmed.)
I'll be creating a set of four exclusive Kickstarter prints for $25+ backers and will upload them here as I finish them. Keep an eye on this space!
For illustration and comic rewards, please keep requests PG-rated. Original characters are totally cool and we'll go over more details on this later.
INTERNATIONAL BACKERS: Please don't forget to add $10 ($5 for Canada) to your pledges to cover the cost of shipping and handling.

The books along with 8.5x11 and 4x6 prints will definitely ship out in July. Backers with more specialized rewards will get the books first and original commissions/comics may be sent along in August-September. I'll keep you updated.
Thanks for your patience, everyone. I am in the middle of preparations for a move out of state and I'm doing my best to make the transition as smooth as possible.
