Liquid Designs: Kyle Kraiter's Art Glass Studio

$17,037

140

Glass is a material unlike any other and for the last 14 years has been my passion. If you share in a love of art, symbolism of nature, or creating things with your hands: then you can help me take my glass designs to the next level and also share my experience with others. This will be achieved with the construction of my own custom-designed glassblowing studio.

Inspiration

I love the curvy fluid shapes that glass creates, and that when a piece is finished, it is still a liquid, looking as if a molten moving object had suddenly been frozen in time. My love for the ocean and surfing influences my work more than anything else. The bending lines and curving shapes of my glass are reflective of the ocean waves I love. When I look at they way glass interacts with light and its subtle color changes, it stirs up the same feelings I get when I stare into the shimmering surf. I don’t just love how glass looks. I also love the process. Glass blowing is always exciting and challenging, both physically and mentally. Every time I do it I learn something new. In a way, the challenges of glass are a lot like surfing: It requires a delicate balancing act and careful timing as you form this partnership with a dynamic, flowing liquid. The difference is, you are sculpting it with your own two hands at 2000 degrees!

Experience

I started working with glass 14 years ago. It began with 3 years of formal training in New Zealand and Sweden. My desire to get new perspectives on the material also took me to Norway, Denmark, Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, and Japan. I have had the opportunity to teach and make glass with some of the best and most respected glass artists in the world. It hasn’t always been easy, but I’ve been making a living off nothing but glass for the last 7 years by selling my work in galleries throughout the US.

Why I am building a Studio

You may wonder, if I’m already making a living as a glass blower, then why am I still dreaming of building my own studio. There are multiple reasons:

1. Achieve a higher level of creativity and quality: In my own studio I will build and arrange the equipment to my needs, allowing me to reduce losses and make the new, more daring designs I want to be doing. I will also have control over the glass quality, so I can expand into designs that require a level of perfection in the raw material that’s not available with renting. Plus, with over 300 hours less time per year spent on the administration and studio prep required for renting, I can be more focused and spend time actually exploring and creating in the studio.

2. Environmental benefit: Instead of driving 2 hours for each day I work, I will walk 4 feet from my house. That makes for about 9,000 fewer miles my van is on the road each year. When I’m running my own studio I will be able to use recycled glass. I’m also working with a clean energy consultant to develop a way to capture the excess ambient heat from the studio and use it to heat my home.

3. Personal/public health benefit: My building design incorporates more fresh airflow than any of the rental studios and has the ability to be hosed out. This creates a cleaner and safer work environment not only for me, but also for my assistants and public visitors.

4. Sharing the love with others!: I will be able to have a greater connection to the public and be able to share what I love with others though demonstrations, classes, and mentoring.

What you are funding

Materials: Your donation will fund the structural materials for the building: wood rafters, roof, columns, and walls; siding, trim, paint, and roofing for the exterior; windows and fan for light and ventilation.

Risks and challenges

I have not made the decision to build a studio lightly. I’ve been focused on the ultimate goal of building a studio since early in my glass career and chose the site of my house with this in mind. My custom building design and layout is influenced by 14 years of notes and photo research from the studios I’ve visited around the world. I’ve also developed a network of industry professionals who will continue to provide input and support. I’ve already worked to address the following major risks of the project:

1. City and neighborhood approval
By now, everyone in the city offices knows me as the guy building the glass studio. I’ve ensured my project complies with all the building and zoning codes. I have discussed with my neighbors what my plans are and they have been very welcoming.

2. Funding and Construction
I have found a builder and other necessary contractors that can make my design come to life and already have plans and detailed quotes. I have purchased used equipment that I will modify for my needs and literally breathe new life into. The land preparation and foundation can be covered with personal savings. I am prepared and approved to take a home equity line of credit for the construction and finishing of the building, but that can only go so far—I need your contribution for the materials listed above which are literally the building blocks that will bring my dream to life.
