The Asuli - PHYSICAL AR BOOK + THE INTERACTIVE LEARNING APP (Android or Universal iOS app). You'll also receive digital wallpapers, and vote for one interactive element in the app!
When we were growing up, our grandparents told us a story about a majestic fish that was slowly eating parts of the island and how the native Chamorros worked together to capture it and save the island and its people. The legend tells of a group of fishermen who spot a giant fish eating away at the land in the center bay of Guam. They go back to the village and work together with the men and women to devise a clever plan to outsmart it, eventually capture it and in the end saved the island. This Chamorro legend teaches the importance of a community working together for the greater good (inafa’ maolek). We've spent the past few months researching and conceptualizing how we could make this timeless legend fun and interactive. Turning this into a digital learning app was our best solution to preserve and promote the culture and provides fun learning resources to families anywhere in the world.
The digital suite will consist of a mobile learning application for kids, an e-book, two audiobooks that will be narrated in Chamorro and English, and an augmented reality app that will bring the print elements to life. The augmented reality app or Kottura ART (Augmented Reality Tool) will be a separate downloadable app that will be used in conjunction with the printed book, t-shirts, and other Kottura brand paraphernalia for the legend. We recognize the importance of visual learning for children and through the use of visual multimedia we can spark their creative imaginations.
The Digital Suite
Please keep in mind all artwork and components are in the Prototype Stage and are not final and may change.
Interactive Learning App
The central app combines the experiences of the project in one fun and engaging app. Select either English or Chamorro and have the option to read by yourself, or have the app read to you. Touch objects throughout the story to cue interactive elements. Also enjoy mini-games such as drag n drop, puzzles, counting games, and many more!
The ebook will be narrated in both Chamorro and English. Experience animations and sound effects that will enhance the storytelling.
The story will be narrated and scored in both Chamorro and English. Experience the Chamorro tale on your iPod, smartphone, tablet, during your commute, or in your living room.
Printed AR Book
Experience the legend in a tactile way with a printed book. Combine the book with our augmented reality app Kottura ART, and you can experience multimedia from the ebook right on the printed page! Have the book narrated for you and some of the elements animate right before your eyes.
Kottura ART App
An app that will use Augmented Reality to enhance and interact with the rewards from this project.
What is Augmented Reality?
As part of the digital suite, we will publish a free app to the App Store and Google Play. Kottura ART will use augmented reality to bring any of our products and rewards to life. The app will use the camera on your phone or tablet device to recognize images or objects in the printed material and this will trigger animations, sounds, or videos. Here are some examples of what might happen when you combine the rewards with the Kottura ART app:
- T-shirt - The fabric on the custom pocket might come to life and we may jump out of the pocket and say thank you!
- Snack Packs - A certain smart fish could jump out and try and eat your grapes.
- The printed book - We want to bring some of the multimedia aspects of the ebook and learning app to the printed book. By using the Kottura ART app, the printed book can be narrated and some elements animated right on the page!
Growing up on Guam is a very unique experience, one that encompasses rich oral history. Most of what we know to be true of who we are as a people has been passed down in the form of folklore, legends, song, dance, and language. When we had our first child in the states, we noticed there weren’t many educational resources about the Chamorro culture readily available to us. Most reference materials could only be found on island at public libraries, annual cultural fairs in the mainland (some that were too far for us to travel to), or were too expensive online. Some of the best books our son enjoyed, were usually ones sent from our families from home or ones that we purchased during annual trips to Guam.
We recognize the value of passing on pieces of who we are to our children. We want to be able to give other Guamanians raising their children today on and off-island creative tools they can use with their kids to help them gain a better understanding of the many Chamorro values and traditions that were once taught to us. By using the technologies kids use today, we can bridge the generational gap and have tools and platforms readily available to help them learn about the Chamorro culture.
After living stateside for almost 10 years, we decided to return home to Guam to raise our two kids. We both agreed that new technology depicting the rich history of the Chamorro people was needed and would be a great way to bridge the past and keep the Chamorro spirit alive while increasing accessibility to Guamanians everywhere. This company was the means of expanding on that oral tradition and into the visual and interactive realm. We founded Kottura Innovations in early August 2013. Kottura Innovations is a creative design firm specializing in new media services with focused efforts to increase cultural awareness through the use of digital and social tools.

Angel has over a decade of cumulative experience in communications, new media development, marketing and sales, community outreach, and government experience. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Cal State University Monterey Bay in Communications with concentration in Pre-Law. While pursuing her degree she interned at the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the Naval Postgraduate School as a Technical Support Technician. While there she created teaching modules for instructors and incorporated audio pieces and other technology while working in tandem with Kenneth. Her professional experience in policy and local issues while working for the Lt. Governor of Guam and the Speaker of the 31st Guam Legislature, enhanced her ability to communicate and collaborate with local leaders and educators in the public and private sectors. She currently focuses her efforts on market research and development, business development, and managing all the company’s social media channels and website. During Angel’s secondary schooling, she represented her school in numerous Chamorro competitions and in first grade was the class techa (traditional prayer leader).
To put this package together will require other external expertise. The key players we need to find include local illustrators, voice-talents for narration, Chamorro language translators, and musicians for the scoring. It is very important to us to create this piece entirely through local talent. Our goal is to utilize this platform as a means to showcase the abilities of the local creative community. In order for us to meet our proposed three month development deadline, most of these costs will need to be provided upfront. Additionally, a portion of the funds will be used to purchase printed books.
Lastly, the more important reason is that we want to involve you in the creative process and we welcome fresh ideas of other features we can include in the app or other ways we can enhance the overall user experience. If you have ideas of how we can incorporate other fun, interactive ways for kids and parents to use this app, we want to hear from you. We want to make sure we put out a great product for everyone to enjoy so we figured why not team up with you from the beginning!

Risks and challenges
One challenge that could arise is during the pre-production stage where it is crucial for the team to mesh and form a good creative rhythm. We have previously worked with some local artists who will be a part of our creative team.
Another challenge is to get all the artist's on the same page with the creative vision and direction. We both have worked on numerous productions and plan to have a design kickoff meeting to allow the creative team to meet and collaborate with each other.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
