The Breakfast Club meets the Walking Dead.
It's a concept I've been developing for a while now. Fans of my work know that I've enjoyed flipping genres on their ear, and I plan to do the same with the Spores trilogy.
The story centers around the students of Pineview Academy, a fictional private school in Upstate New York. As they get ready for Prom, a spore with similar properties to Ophiocordyceps Unilateralis infects them one by one, turning them into zombie-like drones, slaves to a hive mind. As the outbreak spreads rapidly through the school at the celebration, it’s clear to everyone that no one is getting out alive.
Spores: Prom of the Dead will be the first volume of a much larger story, and at its core, it is a coming-of-age dramedy set against the back drop of the end of the world. Seems like a daunting task, yeah? Luckily, I've assembled a crack team to help bring the project to life.
Meet the Creators
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Dave Dwonch, former Creative Director and President of Action Lab Entertainment. In my time at ALE, I helped produce several of their titles, including the Eisner-nominated series Princeless. I've also penned several titles, most notably Vamplets (with Gayle "My Little Pony" Middleton), Cyrus Perkins and the Haunted Taxi Cab, and the monthly series Infinite Seven.
Joining me on the road to ruin is artist Santiago Guillen. "Santi" is a graduate of the Argentina School of Visual Arts, worked in comics and illustration for years and traveled Europe as a street caricaturist in 2015. Santiago is quite possibly the most interesting man in comics.
Spores: Prom of the Dead is a 100% creator-owned project, and truly a labor of love. With your help, we are hoping to cover the production cost and print cost for this first graphic novel. This series is a huge undertaking, and your donations will allow us to take time out of our schedules to produce the fully-colored artwork and limited edition black- and-white, Kickstarter-only edition "first issue" of Prom of the Dead. What would a crowdfund be without awesome rewards?
Trust me, your goodwill is being spent in the right places! I'm asking for EXACTLY what is needed to produce, print and distribute Spores. Anything extra will be used to help produce the two planned sequels. We're running LEAN and MEAN, and yet still oddly huggable.
Thanks so much for your support. Now let's go kill some zombies!
Risks and challenges
Risks? Not much! Santi and I are pros! While it is tough to make comics, we're both ready to produce 4-6 pages per week til the book is done!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
