Two Wolves - a page to stage adaptation of the novel by Tristan Bancks - is BANG! Academy of Performing Arts' first production. It is an original work utilising the talent and skills of local creatives including BANG! Director Anouska Gammon, Cumulus Visual Effects technicians and other experienced (and first-time!) cast and crew. As well as giving young actors the immersive experience of rehearsing and performing live theatre, the project will offer work placements to local high school students studying the HSC VET subject Entertainment Industry, enabling them to learn practical skills and acquire invaluable experience in the theatre industry.
Two Wolves is being staged at the Byron Theatre in Byron Bay on August 14 & 15 this year. There will be two matinees for schools and two evening performances for the general public. The production is aimed at audiences aged 10+ as it deals with complex themes including coming of age choices and consequences, expectations of manliness, family loyalty and trust in authority. If the initial season is successful, the second stage of production will tour Ballina, Clarence Valley, Kyogle, Lismore, Richmond Valley and Tweed Shires with the aim of performing school shows in these regions.
We have launched this Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign to ensure that we are able to meet our goal of producing a show at a professional standard with high production values . Funds raised will be used to cover the costs of rehearsal space, theatre hire, visual and audio production, set construction, costumes and props, marketing, and administration. A successful campaign will allow us to financially reimburse our cast and creative team for the many hours of effort that go into creating a quality theatre production, enabling BANG! to continue staging original work in the future.
Risks and challenges
We have recently held auditions and received over 120 applications from aspiring local actors. It was an extremely difficult task to choose the 4 children and 6 adults required, but with casting now in place the process of adapting the book into a stage play begins!
Director Anouska Gammon is working alongside Two Wolves author Tristan Bancks to ensure that the play distils the essence of the novel and stays true to its themes, characters, storyline and direction. The interesting hook of the theatre production will be in its use of visual and audio effects to create the setting and mood of the story as well as to engage a young audience who are perhaps not experienced in the medium of theatre.
Condensing a 271 page book set in multiple locations into a 50 minute stage play will undoubtedly be a challenge, but it is one we are confident of achieving.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
