VR coral reef in progress
VR coral reef in progress

I am thinking of you this time of year. I went through and read all your names with a deep sense of wow, thank you. Heartfelt gratitude. You are the reason that this project is in the sea and now starting to reach more people who want to participate in healing our ocean and coral reef ecosystems.

Moving into a new phase, I'm embarking on immersive interactive art and storytelling exploration with Virtual Reality (VR) as a medium to highlight corals, and beginning experimentation with new fabrication methods for future Living Sea Sculptures and reefscapes.

To follow the unfolding progress more closely, you can become a monthly member HERE.

Current group exhibitions with photos and more about Zoe - A Living Sea Sculpture are at the New York Hall of Science organized by Art & Science Collaborations, Inc. and also at the SciArt Center. They interviewed me for SciArt Magazine blog, to appear soon.

Lemuel and Miranda, fabulous volunteers!
Lemuel and Miranda, fabulous volunteers!

January I plan to be in Cozumel transplanting, working with and training volunteers. Want to come down? LOVE to meet you and show you the coral refuge. Maybe we can plant coral together if you dive. Although it is only 4 meters deep, so you can snorkel too.

The Planetarium in Playa del Carmen is having it's first ever CORAL event on January 13th. I'm a featured artist representing Living Sea Sculpture. Stop by if you are in the area, and please tell your friends who are vacationing there.

As we wrap up 2017, we have a $12,500 goal to reach. Thank you to those of you who have already contributed to this campaign

The Mexican Fund for Nature Conservation (Fondo Mexicano para la Conservación de la Naturaleza) is offering a $12,500 match.  We're close! $4125 to go to meet our match.

You'll receive a postcard of Zoe with Trunkfish taken from the livestreaming Zoecam for your donation of $10 or more. For all gifts of $275 or more, an 18" x 24" professional photographic print.

We want to ensure the success of Zoe and install more projects in the water. If you can help us meet our $12,500 goal, we'll have $25,000 to give us a big push in 2018!

Wishing you health, happiness, and prosperity as we enter this new cycle.

Happy Holidays!

If you're looking for last minute original ideas for gifts, the TED Fellows Gift Guide is out. We're very happy to be in there along with world-changing music, books, tech and creative solution items. I've got one of Manu Prakash's so cool foldscope microscopes. Someone you know needs one for sure.

With gratitude and love, Colleen and the LSS team

Off the hook for Thanksgiving
Off the hook for Thanksgiving

Dear Backers, If you celebrated Thanksgiving, I hope it was a warm and loving time. I have some exciting news that I'm so thankful for - we have a $12,500 matching grant if we can raise the other half, I'm trying here

Back story:

The Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature (FMCN) is an incredible ally. So grateful to the President and Founder, Lorenzo Rosenzweig Pasquel, who made a special trip in August to meet and discuss supporting Zoe. He offered a $12,500 matching grant towards the next phase of monitoring, maintenance, and cultivation programs = half of our $25,000 goal. When I needed to work with good wifi (internet connection) in October, he invited me to work for a week in their headquarters in Mexico City and give a presentation to all the staff. Thanks to Lorenzo, I'm sure our final permit was signed quicker, and I am 1 of 4 women invited by MAR Fund Director, María Jose Gonzalez, to present our various coral restoration methods at COP13's Blue Economy event on December 5th.

Why give:

After all this time, I'm committed to doing what I can to make sure that this Living Sea Sculpture you created through your giving is able to serve as a model to help transform devastated seascapes and tourism practices. Currently, thousands of cruises with people unaware of the destructive effects of their activities arrive in Cozumel daily. We have a chance with Zoe to implement cultivation and monitoring programs with the Sand Dollar Sports Dive Shop guides and visitors, study the water quality with Guadalupe Velazquez, Director of Centro of Innovation and investigation for Sustainable Development, add livestreaming water quality data sensors, and work with the Cozumel Coral Reef Restoration Program efforts growing there to establish an ongoing coalition built through the mutual love of corals, marine life, and health for oceans and all.

We would love your help with this short term fundraiser #givingtuesday #razoogt16. I launched it to keep my focus on what I love and believe in during this tumultuous, anguishing election. Spreading the word and contributing $5+ tax-deductible donations will help us implement long-term programs. All gifts received through Nov 29th will not be charged the usual 4% razoo processing fee, and on Giving Tuesday (Nov 29th), there are also special prizes awarded. (Fractured Atlas, my fiscal sponsor umbrella, will take their 7% fee as normal.)

Corals don't deny climate change and pollution, they're dying from it. Here's a way to help them http://bit.ly/2gxALms #razoogt16

Looking ahead: In a year, I imagine the Zoe operation will be evolving under the leadership of dive guides at Sand Dollar Sports Dive Shop, yet initially I am responsible for the longevity of this unique mineral accretion reef in the region. Apparently there were 5 Biorock projects previously in Cozumel many years ago, but no one was accountable and they are no more. We're not going to let that happen to Zoe. Thank you for caring for corals with me!

5 days after electrolysis started

On Sept 8, 2016, we received our final signature from the government to install Zoe in an incredible home. Zoe touched the seafloor in Cozumel, Mexico on September 23, 2016.

Plans to be part of MUSA in Cancún were blocked due to challenges with our electrical and internet needs. Unlike the cement sculptures, Zoe requires more infrastructure.

Huge thanks to Ingmar Gonzalez Krotzsch for introducing me to Cozumel and uniting an incredible team! He envisioned exactly where it would go and - voilá! Isabel Caamaño Ricken, our brilliant coral biologist, applied for the final permit, along with her inventor brother, Pancho (Francisco) who together have a manifestation to place sculptures into this unique coral restoration lab and underwater art museum, Musubo. This Underwater Golden Diver Museum is a featured attraction of the annual Scuba Fest, organized by Gilda Sigie, who warmly invited Zoe to come to life in this special place.

Zoe is now in good company with bronze busts of Sylvia Earle, Jacques Cousteau, Ramón Bravo, and numerous Fractal Artificial Reefs and Reef Balls. Since 2006, the site aims to increase biodiversity and investigate coral regeneration after devastation from hurricanes and pollution. Sand Dollar Sports Dive Shop owner and project internet+electricity sponsor, John Flynn, and his dive guides want to reduce negative tourism impact on the natural reefs through rehabilitation and ecological recreation programs. You'll see corals colonizing Zoe soon!

Qualti Innovaciones Marinas did a fabulous job installing with their hurricane-proof patented anchors. It was an underwater performance watching Laura and Pancho work skillfully in silent tandem. Thomas Sarkisian, electrical engineer from Global Coral Reef Alliance, has been awaiting over 5 years to turn on the electricity. Right after the switch was flipped on September 29th, the minerals began to deposit and fish started to arrive to eat the algae. YEA!!!

The marinero and capitán were key with the placement of Zoe and the camera into the sea. Here you see Pancho and Thomas preparing the Tilt Pan Zoom View into the Blue Camera to begin livestreaming. Trevor Mendelow has been configuring remotely with Danirel Alvarez Junco of Sand Dollar and the dedicated crew of Soluciones Xtreme Net who laid and wired our cables...a big production!

My great great thanks to ALL OF YOU, my dear backers for being with me since the very beginning in 2011, and to the hundreds, thousands of others I've met along the journey that made this possible! Your contributions kept us going and the sheer number of you was constant motivation!!!!

October 4th I took so many photos :)

You must come to the island to snorkel or dive. Only a 40 minute ferry ride from Playa Del Carmen (close to Cancún). Zoe is about 4m deep and open to the public. Very calm water and an ideal place to get certified in diving if thinking about it? Snorkeling is fine!

The water is crystal clear and fabulous for viewing our livestream. Content is underway for Zoecoral.com site built by amazing TED Fellow, longtime tech consultant and Zoe collaborator, Jen Indovina!

Many special thanks to my loving family, Luis Bourillón, Marisol Rueda Flores, José Luis Funes, Pedro Joaquin Delbouis, Serguei Rico, María Antonia Gonzalez, Lorenzo Rosenzweig Pasquel (FMCN), Lyn Ohala, TEDxCancún, Soluciones Xtreme Net, Staff of Sand Dollar Sports Dive Shop and Sunset Restaurant, Andrés Uscanga, Yibrán Aragón, Marenter, Todo Inoxidable, Infectango, SupporTED, Autodesk, Shaan Hurley, INapesca, UNAM, Cable Cozumel, the black bunny that just hopped by, and every friend, collaborator, acquaintance, coach not listed here who offered help, kindness, direction, mentoring, introductions, dancing, food, fun!!!

ALL of YOU are the reason. Logramos! Next phase, monitoring and colonizing ~~~

With love and fishes, Colleen and Living Sea Sculpture

I'm a woman. I'm in another country. Let's celebrate being international! My next update was being reserved to announce installation, yet so much has happened this past year in Mexico.

Making a fish - future woman
Making a fish - future woman

Zoe, the sculpture you all generously supported and are awaiting to see live-streaming from the ocean and swim by in person is still in good hands on the shore. Installation was planned for December this year after MORE marine permits emerged in spring and cleared by September. The resort put it on hold til 2016 (no date). We're seeking new places with the many incredible connections down here, and continuing to work with the community to bring coral reef awareness to kids and their families. There are also leads in Jamaica and the British Virgin Islands for Zoe's home.

Few highlights from 2015:

5 month coral Biorock experiment with local coral cultivation institute, INapesca in Mexico

TEDxCancún

TEDxGalapagós

Presentations at University of Juneau and Sitka, AK. Created a ceramic "Reef reFORMed"

Nominated and selected 1 of 1st 35 Women for Wildlife visionaries

Autodesk trained university students (UNAM, Puerto Morelos), other coral biologists, and government marine officials in photogrammetry for accurate coral growth monitoring in 3D

Project for #ARTCOP21 (the Climate Change conference) with kids in Mexico (in progress)

Featured project for the 18th Anniversary of the Puerto Morelos National Marine Park

Video "Climate Change and Art" (also below) was commissioned by the Monterey Bay Aquarium's campaign for COP21.  Fabulous filmmaker, Karla Munguia, who used to work for Animal Planet is an editing genius. I WISH it was a video of ZOE in the sea!!!!
