It's about time the world had the chance to see the transformative power of dance at work at Groove With Me. With your help, we can make this possible through the Dancing to a Positive Future video project. For nearly 20 years, the East Harlem-based organization has used free after school dance classes as a means to instill confidence, self-esteem, and leadership among its 250 enrolled girls, ages 4-18. As one of Groove With Me's volunteer dance teachers, I (Jenny Thompson) am thrilled to be spearheading this campaign on the organization's behalf! I truly believe this story needs to be shared and it WILL with your help!
- PURPOSE: Our project involves the creation of a short & sweet video that will share the remarkable story of Groove With Me and the girls whose lives it profoundly impacts. This will mark the FIRST TIME in Groove With Me's history that such a video is made! What a valuable promotional, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and storytelling tool it will be. This means increased awareness, excitement, and resources for Groove With Me, allowing for important program growth that is already in the works. That's a lot of bang for your buck!
COLLABORATOR: Groove With Me has secured Videographer extraordinaire Penélope González to shoot, compile, and edit the footage for the video. González is the Marketing Director for the NYC-based modern dance company RIOULT Dance NY, and has ample experience in creating such videos. (How Perfect?!)
TIMELINE: González will begin shooting footage at the end of April 2015 and continue through June 2015, capturing Groove With Me's annual Tap & Tapas event (Apr. 20), Spring into Summer Recital (Jun. 13), various dance classes, as well as interviews with the girls, volunteer dance teachers, and dedicated staff. Editing will take place during summer 2015 with a final, comprehensive video ready for Groove With Me to share with the public by the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year!
HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
We need your support to make this happen! The project expenses for shooting all of the footage needed along with the associated editing work totals $4,500. By donating to our campaign you make this project a reality - for Groove With Me, our deserving girls, and all the teachers, like me, that make time on a weekly basis to empower these young women.
SINCE GROOVE WITH ME, INC. IS A REGISTERED 501(c)3 NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION, U.S. DONATIONS WILL BE TAX DEDUCTIBLE TO THE EXTENT ALLOWED BY LAW.
Because of you we will share our story with the the world and take Groove With Me's efforts further. On this note, I am personally working on a new initiative for the organization called Groove On* to offer the girls guidance as they prepare for college and ways to engage as role models for the next generation of Groove With Me girls. Your support of this project creates a path for program growth, such as Groove On, by giving us the means to engage future teachers, donors, patrons, and families with our story like never before!
Thank you so much for your support!

*Groove On seeks to extend the remarkable mission of Groove With Me – grounded in the belief that dance empowers, engages, and inspires – for each girl within its East Harlem, NYC community. Through compassionate guidance and opportunities in and out of the dance studio, we invest these young women with a will to succeed as they near high school graduation and go on to become valued role models for tomorrow’s Groove With Me girls. Some initial efforts will include establishing an annual career day, a college preparatory mentorship program, an active alumnae network, and alumnae teaching, volunteer, and support opportunities.
Risks and challenges
We are proud to report that all project collaborators - Campaign Creator Jenny Thompson, Groove With Me Founder/Executive Director Abby McCreath, and Videographer Penélope González - are committed. By raising $4,500, we will absolutely be able to carry out this project. Potential obstacles along the way include logistical issues, space availability for shoots, and time constraints, however the project period we have identified will allow us plenty of flexibility.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
