FIRST GOAL: SUCCESS!!!
SECOND GOAL: Anything we raise above £1500 goes into creating a badass official website and more concept arts for the movie
In a not so distant future, humankind has colonized the solar system. Mars is being terraformed and space stations are everywhere. The world is run by two warring dictatorial mega-corporations that brainwash people into obedient drones. Aboard the WGH Space Academy, however, a small band of cadets decide to take control of their own lives. They escape from the station and make for one of the hidden colonies of the ‘New Athenians’, a secret order which praises freedom and enlightenment. Will their brave and naïve act be the beginning of a new revolution?
How it all began
It all started out as an original film script by writer Viktor Gaal (Battleground ZERO, Dead Dog Squad - both currently in development by Filmblips, the production company of the Highlander, Adrian Paul). Producer Levente Kiss (Gingerclown, Thelomeris) read the story and saw its potential - the very next day (in mid July, 2013), pre-production began.
We presented 'Renegades of the Galaxy' to actors, artists, the director and the DP - everybody got very enthusiastic about the exciting vision, the original story and the new universe and joined out of sheer passion. Lots of concept art was created, sets were designed and built, costumes made, actors cast. Nobody wanted to miss the ride. By mid October, all the material required for the pilot of the 'Renegades of the Galaxy' universe had been shot.
FIRST GOAL: £1500 for the CGI
Right now, we're in the post production phase. We've already invested quite a lot into editing, composing and sound mixing. Unfortunately we've come up a bit short on CGI and color grading. 'Renegades of the Galaxy' features spaceships, space stations, 3D holograhic consols, and a whole plethora of other sci-fi wonders. The creation of these requires 3D models, texturing, lighting & rendering, huge matte paintings, and compositing (green screen keying and rotoscoping), which is long and meticulous work.
SECOND GOAL: anything above £1500 goes into creating a badass official website and more concept arts
Once the pilot is done, we'll turn all our attention to get the funding for the Big Damn Movie. Funding comes from investors and to get them interested, we must show them the potential of our project. A thorough website with lots of concept arts and in-depth data on the ROTG universe is a must. Anything above the £1500 we've raised will go towards that. Concept arts of the characters, places, spaceships, events and a complex website to support our cause.
The cast of 'Renegades of the Galaxy'
Andrea Osvart, actress, executive producer: Andrea recently starred in Eli Roth's 'Aftershock' and is the star of 'Transporter: The Series'. She gained experience in the film industry through 30 plus international productions with world class filmmakers like Tony Scott, Lasse Hallstrom, Tony Gilroy, Luc Besson, and has starred opposite Brad Pitt, Robert Redford, Clive Owen and Heath Ledger. In 'ROTG', she plays Mara, a smart but traumatized girl with a cynical attitude whose sense of justice tends to screw things up.
Nicholas Wittman, actor: A hard working professional, Nick appears by the side of Brad Pitt in 'World War Z' and he's also in the upcoming blockbuster 'Hercules: The Thracian Wars' featuring Dwayne Johnson. In 'ROTG', he plays Steve Conner, the shrewd and rebellious leader of the cadets and captain of the 'Diogenes'.
Miklos Banyai, actor: An experienced actor who's been in lots of features and theatre plays. Miklos plays one of the leading roles in NBC's 'Dracula' series featuring Jonathan Rhys Meyers. In 'ROTG' he is Howey, the hotshot pilot of the 'Diogenes' spaceship.
Victoria Vay, actress: Victoria is a talented young actress who's been in lots of tv series. Coming from a family of actors, she started acting in theatres as a child and has been in such classical plays as Richard III and Oedipus. In 'ROTG', her character is Yuki, the gifted architect of the 'Diogenes'.
The crew of 'Renegades of the Galaxy'
For us, great sci-fi isn’t just about huge space battles (though we love them), but about original storytelling and exploring themes within the current zeitgeist. Building on this project, we plan to explore the 'ROTG' universe further. Oh, and by the way, some of us wear brown coats (hint! hint!) and feel that there's a huge void that needs to be filled.
Viktor Gaal: writer, producer: An established author of many novels (ARCHE, Colour of Tea, Magic Forest), Viktor decided to turn his skills to film scripts. Filmblips production company has already bought two of his works.
Levente Kiss, producer: Levente has made lots of short films, commercials and features. He is most known for Gingerclown, a 3D horror-comedy in the style of the 80's (distributed by Lionsgate Entertainment and Anchor Bay), in which the lead actors are horror and science fiction legends such as Tim Curry (Rocky horror picture show), Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Brad Dourif (Child's play), Michael Winslow (Spaceballs), Sean Young (Blade runner). He has also worked with Mark Hamill (Star Wars) on Thelomeris, a steampunk science fiction movie.
Almos Szalay, director: A talented and creative director who has tried his hand at various tv series and theatre plays. He brought a very unique perspective to the world of ‘Renegades of the Galaxy’.
Tamas Zettisch, director of photography: Tamas graduated from California State University Northridge where he learned the ropes of both film and HD digital video. While wrangling technology old and new, he became a versatile DP who feels right at home on huge and indie productions, while always bringing a little bit of classic film flavor to today's digital cinema sets. During his studies he began working with director Chris Watson on "B" horror movies such as "Evil Ever After." He earned his first feature DP credit on Watson's "Dead in Love" - a dark comedy featuring two ghosts. This film also presented him with the opportunity to have an Academy Award winning actress in front of his lens.
Arthur Valentin Grosz, composer: At the age of 18 he scored his first soundtrack, and ever since, he has orchestrated various film scores, among which is the UK TV series: 'Law & Order' (composer: Andy Price). Arthur has composed music for 16 films, most recently for the films 'Butterflies', 'Choice', 'The Chronicler', all of which premiered in Los Angeles and Cannes. His style is best described as "light classical" combined with “crossover". He is the one responsible for mixing the swashbuckling style into the theme song of 'Renegades of the Galaxy'. His explanation? "It's the story of a bunch of space pirates. Just think about it!"
Risks and challenges
The impossible we've already done (filming, that is), what we have to deliver is only a minor miracle. But with the help of a professional CGI studio, we can manage the post production process.
By now, we've planned every shot and know exaclty what needs to be done. We have a week based schedule of what needs to be finished by when. We'll be in daily contact with the VFX guys to oversee their work and make sure all goes according to plan. Costumes will be posted as soon as the Kickstarter campaign is a success. The post production for the pilot of 'Renegades of the Galaxy' will be finished by mid-January, 2014.
