The Floyd Leg is a simple concept that rethinks the table leg by combining an age old device—the clamp—with a clean, minimal design allowing you to take any flat surface and create a table - best suited for medium and light uses.
The Legs emerged from a personal need and curiosity of mine three years ago. I was living a rather nomadic lifestyle with work and school taking me to different cities. In each new place, I found myself buying (and ultimately) discarding furniture. To solve this problem, I was looking for a work desk that was easy to pack up and move around with. In addition, I wanted something that was beautiful (don’t we all?).
It occurred to me that if I built a set of legs with a minimal and functional design, any surface material could be changed out; simply pack up the legs and then find a flat work surface in the next city. It wouldn’t require any building knowledge and only a few minutes to set up. Searching out material palettes would be an interesting and low-cost endeavor. It was sustainable because no alterations to the surfaces were being made. Thus, the legs were born.
Most of our cities have a rich supply of reclaimed materials available at low costs. It’s exciting to explore these places and imagine material combinations that fit around our own taste and preferences. The spaces we create in our homes and workplaces are reflective of who we are.

It's impractical to produce just one set of legs. With your help, we will be able to fund the first wave of high production making the legs more widely accessible. We're striving to raise enough money put forth a production run of 400 legs.
The leg is available in two different lengths. 29” table height and a 16” coffee table height. They are produced here in Detroit and made with American steel. The name Floyd harkens back to the name of my father, grandfather, and great grandfather, all steel mill workers. In the same spirit of local manufacturing, we’ve established partnerships with local machine shops to produce the legs.
We recommend the leg for medium and light uses. This means that the leg is best suite for applications such as a desk, coffee table, side table, etc.
One minor modification we will be making to the final model will be a larger clamping area on the fastener, ultimately making the leg stronger and easier to use. Rather than the small foot that is currently on the end of the fastener, the new model will have a 1.5" diameter foot for a better connection.
Risks and challenges
The process of refining the design and bringing the leg to market has been underway for nearly 9 months and includes several prototypes, one of which I've been using as a desk in several apartments. Fortunately, we have spent months vetting manufacturers and outlining the production logistics so that the leg will reach the donor as scheduled; however, there can often be hitches with manufacturing, so we've left a little cushion and hope to have the legs to backers sooner. Although this is our first experience bringing a product to market, we have been thorough in establishing relationships with the manufacturers and working out the kinks ahead of time to ensure a steady roll out.
Floyd is ready, the production facilities are ready, and we are ready. Help us make this happen!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
