"The Kite Machine" is a traveling exhibition of handmade kites. These hand-made miniature kites are made from recycled windbreakers and umbrellas, giving new life to old material in the form of kites.
They will be distributed in a refurbished snack machine in various locations around New York City, beginning at Rockaway Taco, on Beach 96th Street this Summer. Rockaway is a favorite weekend getaway for many New Yorkers, where they can relax and take in the elements (not to mention the wind is perfect for kite-flying!)
The machine will be a landmark for workshops for those who seek to further pursue their kite-making and learn special techniques for flying. It will also be a venue for artistic collaboration, with local artists doing limited-edition series for The Kite Machine each month.
Kite-flying allows us the opportunity to reconnect with nature in a way that is sustainable, transient, and magical. This Summer, let's all fly together.
"I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things." -Antoine de Saint Exupéry
What your pledges go toward:
- Art materials for building "The Kite Machine"
- Help with our general traveling expenses: gas, rentals, etc.
- Help with covering material costs for kite production
- General upkeep and maintenance
What if we exceed our goal?
Well, great! We can always add more stops to the machine's journey around the city, we can make multiple Kite Machines, and more kites will be made! We'll have a little cushion in the event hidden costs pop up along the way!
Thank you x1000!
