About

What started as a University of Iowa journalism school project has blossomed into a wealth of information, told in personal detail through the lives of two mothers struggling with meth addition while trying to keep together their families. Their concern -- and one we all should share -- is that their mistakes continued a cycle of destructive drug abuse in the families they want to keep intact at a time when drug intervention programs are being curtailed. Katie Kuntz, a reporter working with IowaWatch, a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization and member of the Investigative News Network, is building a documentary in collaboration with Iowa Public Television to tell this story. Katie is taking the research she has done through this year and turning it into a short documentary that will serve as an honors project at the University of Iowa, a story for display at IowaWatch.org and, if we hit our mark with high quality worthy of display there, public television. Katie is working under the direction of veteran broadcast news reporter Charles Munro, now a lecturer on the Iowa faculty, on a story that will surprise many who think we are beating this problem of meth addiction, and who do not know that the problem is so prevalent in the nation's heartland.

Risks and challenges

Our risk is that we must meet the high standard that Iowa Public Television places on the content it airs, and that potential production glitches or delays could add unexpected pressure when meeting that standard. We will post the finished documentary on IowaWatch.org but want to reach Iowa Public Television's wider audience. We might be back here for additional production and post-production support.
