About

A chance encounter with a group elephants crossing at Assam Heritage Tea Gardens. Many of our teas are blended with the handcrafted green and black teas from this family tea farm.

What is our project?

We are creating an Elephant Approved™ certification program to certify tea gardens that practice elephant and wildlife conservation and promote their efforts.

Why are we doing this?

The Asian Elephant is facing extinction, in part, due to shrinking habitat from tea gardens that have replace the jungles. This has put tremendous pressure and stress on this species and has created life threatening conflict for both people and elephants. We have been tea blenders for 15 plus years and feel an obligation to do our part to help mitigate the issue.

Why do we need backers for this project?

We cant do this alone. We need your support and encouragement. Together we all can make a difference and save lives.

It is important that the program is credible so it is vital to hire someone to oversee the tea gardens who have been certified. We plan on using the funds for the following assignments.

Hire a field manager. This associate will be responsible for application intake and the administration of Elephant Approved™ certification and audit review of each certified tea garden to ensure integrity of the program. It is paramount that we hire someone in India who understands the languages, customs and mores, geography, business culture and terrain. We are happy to announce that we have found the perfect candidate for this role and are seeking funds to pay his salary and travel expenses to the regions affected by Human Elephant Conflict.

Shipping fees to and from India. We will be shipping documents and samples back and forth to India. We will use the most economical method, but we can expect each package to be at least $45 each. We will utilize electronic files and printing companies in India to reduce costs as much as possible.

Trade show travel expenses and fees. We plan on exhibiting at tradeshows and other venues in the United States to introduce consumers, both retail and wholesale, to the Elephant Approved™ label.

Hire a wildlife photographer for photojournalistic documentation. We need to capture images of the tea gardens, corridors and elephants to show progress of the certification program. We will write articles about our certified tea gardens to promote their brands and recognize stewardship.

Overview of the issue and our commitment.

Elephant Approved ™ was conceived when, Joy Wujek, the owner of Petali Teas, read an article in an Indian magazine about tea gardens in India and the challenges that they face with migrating elephants. From there she learned about Human Elephant Conflict (HEC) and how the Asian Elephant is facing extinction. Having been in the tea industry for almost two decades, Joy felt compelled to help and get her company engaged in elephant conservation.

Elephants are endangered, and tea estates and other forms of agricultural development are contributing factors. There are approximately 30,000 to 40,000 wild Asian Elephants left - India is home to 60% of the population. Deforestation in any form, including the removal of forests to allow for the development of agriculture, results in the fragmentation of elephant habitat and can disrupt both routine travel and seasonal migration patterns and pathways. In the absence of the forest, elephants often find refuge in tea estates that have replaced the forest, and this is where the trouble starts. Elephants are feared by many, and with just cause. They trample tea gardens, destroy land and homes, and kill an average of 400 people a year. When elephants and people clash, it is called Human Elephant Conflict, or "HEC". In order to resolve ongoing HEC, one reasonable approach is to recover and restore the natural/ biological corridors so elephants can safely move about without coming into contact with humans. When HEC is prevalent, elephants die because of retaliatory killings - hunting, poisoning, trench trapping and electrocution. They also struggle in the pursuit of food and water, often traveling new and unfamiliar passageways riddled with hazard, and as a result may run into difficulty when they encounter the hallmarks of human development. Sadly, it is not unusual for elephants to be injured or even killed while crossing roadways or railroad tracks.

The elephant is a keystone species meaning that they are necessary for the ecosystem and if they were removed, the ecosystem would drastically morph and affect the existence of flora and fauna- Elephants spread seeds with browsing and manure, they fertilizer land, they aerate soil and keep canopies open for flying mammals and birds.
Petali Teas started Elephant Approved™ with two missions:
  1. To help World Land Trust and Wildlife Trust of India by donating proceeds from the sales of teas and tea accessories to its appeals which fund the restoration of natural wildlife corridors, giving animals their rightful passage. WLT and WTI also participate is voluntary relocation of villages that are in proximity to the dangerous wildlife.
A current appeal that we are helping with at Petali Teas.
A current appeal that we are helping with at Petali Teas.

2. To create an Elephant Approved™ certification program which certifies individual tea gardens and provides assistance with conservation plans and elephant safety training.

This certification allows the tea garden to label their teas with the logo below. When consumers sees this logo, they can feel confident that the tea was grown on an estate that practices elephant conservation.

We have made much progress since its inception in mid year 2016; Petali Teas registered Elephant Approved™ with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, designed and manufactured tea accessories in India, researched and developed new tea blends and scoped out tea gardens with conservation plans.

We hired Harry Peachey, a renowned elephant expert, to help us develop criteria for the certification program and teach us about elephant behavior and environments. He has scheduled lectures and events to help raise awareness of the plight of the Asian elephant.

We launched our Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram, designed the logo and signed a corporate agreement with World Land Trust.

Risks and challenges

Risks Involved

We have identified three major risks:

1. What would we do if our field manager was no longer able to perform his duties? We have a succession plan in place and have identified two people who will be trained for the role.

2. What if the tea garden managers do not see the value in our certification program? It is important to outline the benefits, emphasizing eco stewardship, safety and reduced costs from incidents. We will appeal to the ancient tradition and symbolism of this sacred animal, the symbol of mental strength, earthiness and responsibility.

3. Tea managers and employees have legitimate fear of elephants and may not want to do anything to help the elephant. The solution is to show examples how conservation reduces conflict and saves lives. There are tea gardens doing great things for the elephants and we will share their successes.

We have strong people on our team, Each have unique talents to help us bring this project to fruition. We will run into obstacles, but we will persevere.

We are confident that we have planned for our risks and are committed to saving the Asian elephant. Please join us today by backing our campaign.
