Thank-you shout out to Dave Colson for his acoustical background music!
**Update #3: The painting below, titled Knots (20"x24"), will go to the next backer who pledges $150.
Hi everyone! My name is Nicole Mueller and I'm a visual artist living in Baltimore, MD. I have the opportunity to participate in a 3-week-long artist residency with Proyecto 'ace in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the Fall of 2013! I would love for you to be a part of making this adventure possible! Read more about what I'll be doing while I'm there, and see examples of the art I'll be making (and giving away!) below. Check out www.nicolemariemueller.com to see examples of the paintings & prints you could be taking home!
Here's my proposal for my project "Character Development:"
Made from a personal vocabulary of scribbles, lines, shapes, and squiggles that become like characters in an abstract narrative, my current work explores painting from a variety of angles that include animation and installation. Developed out of an alternating process of uncontrolled, arbitrary decisions followed by thoughtful, responsive marks, the goal is to keep things as open and playful as possible. The results are usually colorful abstractions, or playful explosions, that hover the boundary between chaos and control.
By introducing elements like motion, time, or space, I am able to further explore these boundaries in animating painting or painting in an environment. Small, immediate collages lead into larger paintings, and sometimes even larger wall paintings or experimental animations. Each platform offers a new opportunity for playing with mark, material, and scale, and in translating a language into different formats.
I love the idea of different voices or ideas, incongruous marks and materials, coming together harmoniously in a painting. Broadly, the theme is relationships between contrasting elements. Whenever I have had the opportunity to travel to other countries, especially in Central & South America (Guatemala & Peru), I am most drawn to the color, the difference in landscape and architecture, and how this contributes to the distinctive "feel" of a place.
My goals are to continue to develop a visual language with which to build an abstract narrative from and elaborate on a cast of "abstract characters" using collage, paper, and mixed media, to be used in future paintings and animations. Our own language and perspective are embedded in the way we see things, and interact. I believe the inevitable influence of Buenos Aires' colorful culture, as well as the space, time, & support provided at Proyecto 'ace, will allow me to continue this dialogue between what influences us from the outside world and the intuitive decisions that originate from a kind of childlike freedom and are exposed or revealed in play.

Thank you so much for your support!!!! Every contribution helps and I wouldn't be able to do it without you!
Risks and challenges
Although I've set my Kickstarter goal at $2,000 I'll actually need $5,000 to get to Buenos Aires. I'm looking into other sources of funding such as travel grants, but am hoping to raise as much as possible through Kickstarter!
It can also be intimidating traveling for a month to a country you've never been before (it's my first residency abroad!) but I'm excited to share the experience with friends & family who support me at home and via Kickstarter!
