We’re Ghosts - a global network of designers, developers, fabric specialists and supply chain experts committed to creating the most environmentally-friendly high-performance technical outerwear possible. Using our 50+ years of combined industry experience, we’re using innovative materials, progressive techniques and design thinking to build a sustainable future.  Transparent, responsible, ethical and certified.

We’ve developed the world's first 3-layer technical fabric featuring a revolutionary waterless-dyeing process and a recycled yarn made from discarded clothing and a PFC-free DWR coating. The result? We've immensely reduced water use, chemical and carbon emissions as well as energy use in a fabric that is equal or better performing than anything currently on the market.

Available directly to you at up to 60% off the future retail price, but only on Kickstarter until May 4, 2019. Check out the 'Late Bird' pledges.

THE 3-LAYER SHELL JACKET

Tough enough to outlast even you, this 3-layer jacket is your go-to for long days in the elements. Our proprietary Xero T8 SR fabric is a waterless-dyed fabric made from recycled yarn. 20,000mm/20,000gm ratings ensure protection and breathability in the harshest of climates, while the soft hand-feel and mechanical stretch provide comfort and confidence in all conditions. All the features you’d expect in a technical shell, with a smaller footprint on Planet Earth.

Available in S, M, L, XL - sizes are chosen after the Kickstarter project is closed. Available in one colour: black. Order now, delivery in November 2019.

 FEATURE COMPARISON CHART

THE 3-LAYER SHELL PANT

Chock-full of performance-enhancing features, go farther with the 3-layer shell pant. Like the jacket, the pant features an anatomical fit with our proprietary waterless-dyed fabric made from recycled yarn and featuring a 20,000mm/20,000gm rating. Large thigh pockets and hand warmer pockets store the necessities, while kick patches add durability to this timeless, environmentally-friendly silhouette.

Available in S, M, L, XL - sizes are chosen after the Kickstarter project is closed. Available in one colour: black. Order now, delivery in November 2019.

THE RE:DOWN 700-FILL PUFFER

The jacket you'll be wearing every day, everywhere. We know, because we can’t take it off. With a 700-fill down insulation layer, it's the perfect weight to wear under a 3-layer shell. The PFC-free DWR coating protects in light rain and provides wind-resistance as a stand-alone outer layer.

Re:Down insulation is recycled from post-consumer quilts. The waterless-dyed recycled yarn 20 denier fabric is light, smooth and strong. The bonded cells reduce the need for stitching, retaining the integrity of the fabric and reducing cold spots to keep you going.

Available in S, M, L, XL - sizes are chosen after the Kickstarter project is closed. Available in one colour: black. Order now, delivery in November 2019.

SIZE CHART

Our sizing is what you would call 'regular' and quite true to size. If you like things loose, size up. For example I'm 5'10"/ 160lb so am a Medium, however I like outerwear to fit a little loose so I choose a Medium puffer and a Large Jacket & Pant.

ABOUT US

My name is Tony McWilliam. I started Faction Skis almost 15 years ago with an aim to disrupt an ageing, conservative industry by making innovative products for a new style of skiing. I've designed skis and outerwear for athletes such as Candide Thovex, Johnny Collinson, Sam Anthamatten and X Games Slopestyle gold winner Alex Hall, and have built supply chains all over the world.

But we face a bigger challenge - climate change. As a father, skier, and mountain dweller, I am committed now, more than ever, to creating change. I want to give passionate skiers and snowboarders the opportunity to choose products that suit their performance requirements whilst answering their demands for reduced environmental impact and greater social responsibility. To do it, I built a global network of designers, developers and fabric specialists.  We call ourselves Ghosts Apparel Studio, creators of the world’s most environmentally-friendly, high-performance, technical outerwear.

At Faction we disrupted the ski industry to create better products for skiers everywhere. Together we can do it again, and transform the apparel industry.

Thanks for your support, and hope to see you on the hill.

Tony McWilliam - March 2019

OUR FABRICS

We couldn’t find what we wanted, so we made it ourselves. In conjunction with one of the world's leading fabric mills, we created two beautiful high- performance technical fabrics: a 3-layer twill with a waterproof/breathable membrane, and a 20 denier down-proof ripstop. Smooth and supple, they drape extremely well, but are also weatherproof and durable. Equal or better in performance than anything on the market, we know what works best in the mountains.

Performance is key, but we went one step further. Unlike recycled PET fabric that is commonly used in eco-friendly garments, our fabrics eliminate the reliance on petroleum-based products and are instead made from upcycled uniforms and discarded clothing. These are collected locally at recycling stations and eliminate land-fill waste. The recycled raw material is mixed with a colour batch to embed the colour before turning it into a yarn, removing the need for water-based dyeing. This revolutionary process reduces water consumption by 75%, chemical emissions by 90%, energy use by 50%, and CO2 emissions by 60%. We also use a PFC-free Durable Water Repellant coating.

Each process is Bluesign accredited to ensure the highest environmental standards are adhered to.

DYEING METHOD COMPARISONS:

Traditional ‘piece’ dyeing uses an immense amount of water and produces high levels of chemical and carbon emissions. It's a 250-year old process that was developed to dye organic fabrics. It's simply not efficient for synthetic fabrics.

With waterless 'solution' dyeing, we’ve taken the traditional way of doing things and turned it on it’s head - creating a better fabric and helping reduce environmental impact immensely. The raw recycled material is mixed with a master colour batch to impregnate colour. This material is then extruded into a yarn, which is then woven into a fabric and a waterproof/breathable membrane applied.

This creates a technical fabric with the colour embedded in it, meaning no dyeing needs to happen. There is some water needed to clean and cool the machinery required, but no water is used in the process itself. This results in a water saving of around 75% compared to traditional methods and we’re edging ever closer to 100%.

RE:DOWN RECYCLED DOWN INSULATION

Our friends at Re:Down are quite simply, amazing. They recycle down and feathers extracted from post-consumer goods so that they can be reused as filling material in apparel, sleeping bags or bedding. Now that’s some fluff we can get behind.

Re:Down not only uses their own thermal water for the washing, not relying city water, but they also return used water back to earth as clean as drinking water. They use no chemicals for the regular finishing of Re:Down products, sterilization happens through high temperature.

In terms of performance, they have developed a treatment that makes the down water-repellent. It absorbs less moisture, dries faster and keeps loft and thermal properties even in wet conditions. It is an ecological recipe with no fluorine or formaldehyde. All of this combined with 30% of their factory electricity produced by solar panels makes Re:Down an ideal partner for the future.

SUSTAINABILITY - A LONG TERM COMMITMENT

Climate change is real. It is happening before our eyes. We are experiencing more intense and unpredictable seasons. Our reliance on fossil fuels is polluting the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land and oceans on which we rely.

At Ghosts, we are committed to working towards a sustainable future by utilizing emerging technologies and processes to help minimize our environmental impact on the planet, whilst also maintaining a commitment to social responsibility and the welfare of all those who are part of our supply chain. Our aim is to ensure that every product we make has as minimal an environmental impact as possible during production. We are also dedicated to finding ways to repair, re-use or collect, and recycle new products or donate to those in need. Over the coming years we will be working on all of these elements to create a long-term plan to build a circular economy.

We're also partnering with Protect Our Winters, established by snowboarder Jeremy Jones to raise awareness on what everyone can do to help climate change. For a more detailed overview of our sustainability initiatives, please visit our website.

SUPPLY CHAIN

For decades, factories and supply chains have been hidden in secrecy. This has made basic standards for environmental impact, working conditions and human rights impossible to manage. We're here to change that.

Our design, development, and marketing teams work independently in satellite studios, while our raw material, trim and cut and sew factories are all located within 300 km of each other - greatly cutting down on emissions.

After production, the finished products are shipped via boat to distribution centers in North America and the EU before heading out to individual customers.

For a full list of suppliers and their details go to our website.

PRODUCTION TIMELINE

Risks and challenges

Although our studio is new, we have been designing and running outerwear supply chains for years for well-known brands all over the globe. We have long lasting relationships with our manufacturing and logistics partners and will be making regular visits to the supply chain during manufacturing to ensure the project stays on track.

We feel confident that we can deliver your rewards on time and we have already booked space in the factory. Unforseen circumstances can cause delays of course, however we have also chosen each element of the supply chain to be as close as possible to each other to eliminate any shipping or customs issues with fabrics, trims, zips etc.

If for some reason we fall behind or run into any issues during production, the Kickstarter community will be the first to know.
