Hey Kickstarters, thanks for taking the time to check out my project.
THE MO MUG STORY
I started MO MUG about a year and a half ago. I was looking for work after returning home from a couple of years abroad, and in my spare time began decorating ceramic mugs with moustaches. It wasn’t long before friends and family began asking me if I could “Mo their Mug”, and then it became friends of friends, and then… well I’m sure you get the picture. It was obvious that this was something that people really liked. I started looking at ways to get my designs to the mass market, but was shocked when I realised the numbers of so called ‘disposable’ paper and plastic cups that are thrown away each year. I knew that I did not want Mo Mug to be a part of this problem. In fact, I decided, in a late night moment of inspiration – what if Mo Mug could be part of the solution? A reusable coffee cup. Not only would the mugs have a great design, but they’d be doing their bit for the environment too.
In order for Mo Mug to be something that people used again and again instead of their everyday, disposable coffee cups, it had to be something they would really enjoy drinking from. The hard wearing types of plastic that many similar products use actually alter the taste of the coffee, so after some extensive research and far too many milligrams of caffeine, I decided on porcelain. Porcelain is the nicest way to drink coffee; when you pour a hot liquid into porcelain it heats up, keeping your coffee, tea or hot chocolate hot for a longer period of time. It also doesn’t alter the taste of your drink.
Mo Mugs are double walled, with a thin layer of air between the two walls. This means that while the coffee stays hot, the mug itself remains cool to touch, so you won’t burn your hands. Sizes 8, 10 or 12 ounces, and with six different moustache designs to choose from there’s really a Mo Mug to suit everyone.
American along is using over 23 billion paper coffee cups each year and most of these cups are non-recyclable. The amount of solid waste created and valuable resources consumed throughout the process of manufacturing and drinking coffee is an escalating problem:
* 58 billion paper cups are thrown away (not recycled) every year
* 20 million trees are cut down in the process of manufacturing paper cups
* Amount of water used in the process is approximately 45 billion litres
WHY MO MUG NEEDS YOUR HELP
Mo Mug isn’t just a cup with a moustache on the side – it’s a concept that can help create an awareness of the effect our daily actions are having on the world around us. I’ve started this kickstarter campaign in order that I can spread the word, and help the Mo Mug message reach as many people as possible. Things that money from your pledge will go to include:
• Materials for Mo Mugs – the high quality porcelain that I want Mo Mugs to be made from ain’t cheap!
• Advertising and Spreading the Word – the more people that know about Mo Mug the more people that are likely to start thinking about their disposable cup usage
• Expansion – the ‘tash design isn’t going to be for everyone, but the concept should. I’m looking at designing more reusable mugs with a different theme
WHERE MO MUG IS AT….
The prototypes have been approved and we are ready to produce our first line of Mo Mug. I currently have support from a number of cafes in my local area who are taking Mo Mug on.
AND WHERE MO MUG IS GOING…
I’m looking to supply Mo Mug to a number of shops, cafés and other stores with an environmental conscience. More designs are in the pipeline and I’d love for Mo Mug to do to the coffee cup what the reusable canvas shopping bag did to its plastic cousin.
I’d love to have you on board in helping to reduce the number of paper cups that are wasted each year. Like us on Facebook to help spread the word, or pledge to receive one of the wonderful Mo Mug packages detailed below.
Happy coffee drinking,
Tony Small, founder Mo Mug.
