Our forthcoming book, tentatively titled Double or Nothing, will focus on collaborative twin pairs in the arts and creative fields. The estimated release date of Double or Nothing is mid/late-2018 with prominent art publisher TBD. The form of the book will be equally image- and text-based in the style of a high-end “coffee table” art book. We aim to profile 10-15 twin pairs of varying creative backgrounds; each lookalike pair must work together as one professional entity. The book will also feature introductory essays, such as one by a twin-studying psychologist.
This unique book concept features peer-to-peer (or rather, twin-to-twin) interviews. Once we reach a critical mass of twins committed to participating in the book, we will approach publishers in mid-2017. We already have nine (9) pairs of international creative collaborative twins on board, of all ages and ranging from the music to design to fine arts industries. We are very excited to keep talking with other pairs!
We’re Alice Taranto and Daphne Taranto: 23-year-old identical twins, creative publishers and designers based in New York City who have worked together throughout our lives. (Alice is 17 minutes older, if you were wondering.) We founded and ran a multi-format art book for four years while Daphne studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA, General Fine Arts + Art History BFA '15) and Alice at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD, Graphic Design BFA '15).
We have always been interested in other creative twins who collaborate together professionally and have been researching this relationship for over three years. We are thrilled to bring these stories together in print. We think that the general public will be very interested in this (somewhat niche) topic; the idea has been well-received so far by twins and non-twins alike.
In seeking a proper book publisher, a successful Make 100 Kickstarter campaign will act as a proof of concept, showing that the public (singletons and multiples alike!) supports this idea and is excited to see the book come to fruition. The campaign will augment our case, enabling us to approach bigger publishers with wider distribution networks. Secondarily, the net profits (after purchasing the keytags) will help us to continue to afford working on the project while we seek publishers and will act as a starting base to fund the full publication.
The keytag is made with Various Keytags, a small company that makes just these. The #TWINNING keytag is custom-designed and ordered specifically for this campaign. The keytags are 2" x 0.75" (51 x 19 mm) the metal ring is 0.75" (19 mm) in diameter. Use it for your actual keys, as an accessory, give it to someone else, get one for both you and a friend so you can be #twinning, too...
The full funding goal supports:
- Production of the (100) tags for Kickstarter backers
- Allows a buffer profit to order (30) extra tags to give as gifts to thank the participating twin pairs (one tag per twin)
- Material costs, S+H, “thank you note” supplies, and Kickstarter fees
- Printing color mockups to present to publishers
- Paying for coworking space during production of the book and transportation to interview and research twins in person
Risks and challenges
This is a pretty low-risk project, as we will produce as many keytags as we have backers (up to 100!). As creative twins are a life’s passion of ours, we are very dedicated to completing the book manuscript, including interviews with twins, and getting the book printed and published—so you have our word that we are going to see this project through in full. Also, Alice has successfully run a Kickstarter campaign to support a past publication of her own called Unbound: A Reader.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
