Help the BookBlast® 10x10 Tour raise funds for the authors and translators on tour around England from 11 September to 15 November 2018. All the money will go directly to support their travel costs to participate in talks in London and across England; and towards the recording and creation of associated podcasts.
The BookBlast® 10x10 Tour will visit 9 regions of England, celebrating risk-taking publishers who fill a unique niche in discovering talent. 10 small independent trade publishers will host author-translator talks in 10 cities over 9 weeks, one in each city. A tour of this kind has not been done before.
WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
How often do you as a reader pay attention to who publishes your favourite books? Who brings books to life and are passionate about the authors and their work, often publishing writing that the bigger publishing houses don’t want to take risks on? Small independent trade publishers are behind some of the finest original literature and poetry being published today.
Many independent publishers stand for something. Authentic and offbeat books add value to the cultural landscape. Writing that is from the margins of culture portrays areas of life that the traditionalist mainstream often ignores.
They do not have an unlimited amount of resources and the larger publishing houses control the majority of the market. Publishing books well is costly. The outlay up-front is high, and there is no guarantee of sales recouping the initial investment. Small independent publishers operate on tight margins.
In order to provide a platform for them, to reach new readers, and to achieve greater visibility and sales, they (and their authors and translators) need all the support they can get.
Who better to talk about their experiences on the frontline of publishing, and showcase their authors and books, than the publishers themselves?
Audiences attending 10x10 Tour talks will encounter writers and translators in person from the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. With these events, BookBlast® aims to unite people in the spirit of friendship and exchange.
The 10 cities are: LONDON | NEWCASTLE | LEEDS | NOTTINGHAM | BRIGHTON | NORWICH | BRISTOL | BIRMINGHAM | LIVERPOOL | MANCHESTER

WATERSTONES may be the UK and Ireland’s leading high street bookseller, but is clearly awake to the potential of small independent publishers and showcasing them to a high-street audience.
The 10x10 tour talks will be hosted nationwide in its flagship stores and tickets are on sale online. Waterstones have donated their venues and instore and online advertising, and we have some tickets to give away.

Risks and challenges
The BookBlast® 10x10 Tour has grown out of the successful celebration of independent publishing kicked off in 2016 via online journal The BookBlast® Diary which showcases independent trade publishers, authors and translators; and writing from France.
We would like to see the 10x10 Tour happen annually so it is crucial this year’s tour is as successful as can be and will happen again so we can bring small independent publishers to all corners of the country annually. That’s where you come in!
BookBlast did not receive Grants for the Arts funding as expected, despite which we successfully raised financial support from the Miles Morland Foundation, an anonymous author, PGUK, and four other publishing industry donors who love the 10x10 tour and its spirit (but prefer to keep anonymous!). Waterstones have generously donated their flagship stores as venues for the talks, and refreshments.
We need to raise £1,500 towards the 10x10 Tour. If we can make that thanks to your support and generosity it’d be fantastic. The money we receive will go directly to support the authors and translators travel costs to participate in talks in London and the nine regions of England; and towards the recording and creation of associated podcasts.
We have bundles of fabulous reads and/or subscriptions donated by all 10 publishers; tickets to the 10 talks donated by Waterstones; a new edition of an early memoir reissued in July 2018 by The New York Review of Books Classics, by Lesley Blanch, the legendary romantic and traveller and celebrated author of 'The Wilder Shores of Love'; some specialist editorial consultancy for your book proposal / outline; a specialist report assessing your manuscript.
If you donate on this page, you have hours of reading and audio pleasure before you as well as the possibility of actually meeting the publishers and authors in person at live events! So please pledge and come and meet them!
BookBlast has partnered up with The Writers’ Centre (Norwich); New Writing North (Newcastle); The Society of Authors (London); The Publishers' Association (London); The Birmingham Literature Festival (Birmingham); Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature (Nottingham); The Children’s Bookshow (London) to spread the word about the tour via newsletters, social media and associated events.
