Have a question?
And to not leave negative comment on the top: did finally solve everything and got my copy. Thanks Ryan for sorting it.
Still failing to send me my copy of the game. is this the moment I get irritated and file chargeback?
Great game that slowly start taking the spot of my all time favourite in workerplacement hybrids. One question though, is there a list of the exclusive empire and district cards? I know i ot two of the extra districts but are uncertain to the empire ones. :]
City of Ancients is lovely with sound mechanics and the retiring armies is fantastic - my only gripe would be sometimes I felt like I was trying to gain the green / purple etc. banner monsters - rarely did people say - I'm slaying the Desert Walker or other beast - this was one area where I wasn't immersed in the theme - but that aside - I loved the game - very close to my favorite worker placement Manhattan project
Empires of the Void (another one of Ryan's game) is getting an expansion
@Jay: I took your advice. I've been enjoying The Ancient World so much, that I tracked down a copy of City of Iron and the expansion! Very nice. I wish TAW had player boards as thick as the ones in CoI.
Everything looks beautiful.
To be honest I'm a little disappointed by the components quality when compared to City of Iron (Your style of art demands linen finish IMO) The board and player boards materials/finish; really is a shame your games don't get the proper funding and recognition they deserve. Anyways in this case it makes me appreciate City of Iron more. For anybody who doesn't own City of Iron, get it. It is special. Thanks Ryan.
Oh, one more anecdote -- On Nov 25, I received an email about a package being shipped from PSI. I had no idea what it was for. Fast-forward a week and a half, I get this package and it turns out to be The Ancient World. Awesome! I still don't know what PSI is though. :P
Received last night! Like others, I thought that the bonus cards and tile were missing until I considered what the brown folder was for; at first I thought it was just for packing purposes. If anyone thinks they are missing those things, check the big brown folder!
The art on the tokens is a bit off-center, especially noticeable on the coins. I don't know if this just bothers me more than others; I noticed the same thing on tokens from Progress (another recent KS game) but nobody else seemed to care. As with that project, I can live with it, but I thought I should be fair and mention it here (since I made a complained a bit about it with the other game). Is this just something that happens from the printing process? I understand that things can't be 100% perfectly aligned, that's what bleeds are for, but it's never been so noticeable to me in other games.
Anyway, other than that, it all looks good. Well, I haven't removed the cards from their shrink yet because I intend to wait until I have time to make tuckboxes for everything. What I can see looks fantastic though. I hope I will have a chance to play it soon!
Finally got to play this tonight. Thank you for making a game that simply works for two players. We loved it!
Arrived in California today. There was a paper listing the game, two cards, and the Frog tile and at first, I thought the cards and tile were missing, and I searched through all the packing paper. Then I noticed that a plain, brown sheet of cardboard was actually a sealed envelope, so I opened it and lo! the missing stuff. Beautiful game -- can't wait to play.
Just got mine today. It looks fantastic. I can't wait until the weekend so that I can play this. I'm very happy with this campaign.
It's a great game!
I played it at least 30 times with my wife and my daughter. It's perfect with 2 players.
As for expansions: I'd buy one. The flow and tenseness of the game is perfect, but I would like to have more variation with the TITANS. There's not enogh of the 1* and 2** ones...
Just played it with some friends, and they all enjoyed it. Really well put together game. I had forgotten to look up what the Frog God statue did though, so we just sort of sat around wondering what the symbols on it meant for awhile. Now I know though, and that certainly seems like it could be useful against competitive folks.
The military units work really well with the retirement system. It was interesting how on one turn I thought I wasn't going to be able to defeat a titan by one bit because I needed another coin to send both my military units out AND send a citizen over to the militia space. BUT I was able to hire a new unit instead who didn't have the extra cost on him anymore and gave me the extra arrow I needed to put the nail in the titan's coffin. It was kinda cool, like I, as the ruler, had been trying to negotiate with my troops to go out and fight for less pay, but they wouldn't budge on the price, so instead I sent someone out to find a group that WOULD fight for one coin. Competitive pricing of mercenary bands :)
If you were going to do an expansion at some point, I might recommend alternate capitals for people to pick from. It's really balanced as it is, and that's great, but it might interesting to see one where the capital has, say, an extra food but only one military. Or possibly one less capacity, but you get 8 coins after each round instead of 5. Or possibly a capital that starts with a voyage bonus which, by the way, was one of the functions that I at first thought "Oh, I'll never use that." and I didn't, but other players did and I realized that if you build it up, it can be a really powerful tool to be able to look at, say, 9 Empire cards and take your pick. Just an idea.
But anyway, it's really good. If nothing else, I'd buy a pack with some more Titans if you got them made, just cause they look cool and sound appropriately horrific.
Thanks for the reply Ryan. I'm sure I don't have the tile so I will send the email. Thanks for the quick response and for the awesome looking game.
Just got mine in Ottawa!! Whaaaaat!!
Happy to hear about the games arriving!
@Brandon- You should have had the Frog God included. Please send an email to malorie(at)redravengames.com and we'll get it sent to you.
Sorry about the triple post. Idk what I did.
Got mine in Hawaii today. Thanks Ryan! I didn't see the frog tile, was that an essen exclusive? Just wanted to make sure I didn't accidentally throw it away with the box.
Got mine an hour ago in FL! Thanks!
Just got mine!!!! Dropped off at my front door. Yahtzee!!! Bingo!!! Not those archaic games.....I'm just saying I got my copy of Ancient World.
@Evan: I got the same notification. I'm going to guess since we both got an email from the same mystery man that it's AW.
Got mine in TX yesterday. Cant wait to play this Thursday with my brothers.
Received mine in TX today. Great surprise in the mail!! Looks fantastic can't wait to play.
Got mine today in PA. Was only expecting 2 boxes in the mail so imaging my surprise when a 3rd showed up! Only took a quick glance at it so far, but it looks good.
Hey Ryan, was the game shipped by someone named Michael Mariolis? I received a Stamps.com notification from him today.
Hey everyone, the games should be arriving very soon! They've been getting packed and shipped here in the US this week and last week.
@Carmine- This district repairs before starving.
Ryan has a new game up on kickstarter called Artifacts inc. It looks like a night light to medium weight game with the same beautiful art we can expect from him!
Hope it is time for an update soon!
There is a district card that allows the player who owns it to repair an empire card and it says AT ROUND END. Could you specify please the right timing? Before or after starving? It is not clear from the rulebook
@Jonathan: The estimated delivery on the pledge levels for North American backers has always been December. One of the last updates said the game would arrive in mid-November then be distributed as soon as customs let them go.
I'm stoked to get this game! I've been waiting until November and now it says the estimated Delivery date is December :/
Sounds like Ryan was thinking it would be landed in the US in mid-November and start shipping after that.
Has shipping started in the US? Anyone in the US get theirs yet?
Thanks for everything,
had a couple games already
and it's great
Received the game, the production is amazing. Thanks Ryan, can't wait to finally play this game!
Hey thanks everyone! I'm happy to hear you're pleased with the production.
@Storapan- Even though Military cards have a little banner in the illustration, they don't count as Tribe Banners.
@LOIC- At the end of the game, you get to decide what each Wild banner will be (it can only be 1 color).
hi, just a question about the cards with wild banners.
how do you count those at the end of the game?
do you choose the color of the banner at the end.
The military units don't have a large banner at the top of the card like the empire and titan cards do, so I assume the banners in the illustration are just for decorative purposes and don't score anything. At least, that's how I interpret it.
Received my game yesterday; looks great! We even tried to play it, and one question arose - how do you score military units? (1) Do they count at all? The rulebook doesn't say so, but neither does it specifically state no and they do have a banner. (2) Do retired units count, as damaged empire cards do?
My copy arrived in the UK today and I'm delighted with how it looks. If all goes well, I should have a chance to play it tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
Arrived in the UK today - looks fantastic. Very pleased with the quality and the rules read well.
Arrived yesterday in Austria - once more ahead of scedule and in great quality! It's always a pleasure backing your projects Ryan! Thanks and 'til the next one.
Just Got it in Denmark! Looks amazing!

yep, arrived yesterday (german version)! great artwork!
are there any rules for the extras (especially for the statue/titan(?) on the tile).
