Build your new village and explore a massive underground world!
- Build a village and explore the caverns below
- Manage your villagers, each with a unique identity
- 2-4 players
- Read from a book of encounters, building an amazing and memorable story each time you play!
How does it start?
Your last village was ransacked by barbarians. You barely had time to pick up the baby and your favorite fishing pole before they started the burning and pillaging. You wandered over a cruel desert, braved frozen peaks, and even paddled a log across a rough sea, kicking at the sharks whenever they got too close, the baby strapped tightly to your back.
Then you found it! The perfect place to make your new home. But as soon as you had the first hut built, you discovered a vast network of caverns underground, brimming with shiny treasures, rare resources, and untold adventure. How could you limit your new village to the surface? You immediately start organizing expeditions and building houses underground as well as on the surface.
With any luck, you'll build a village even stronger than your last-- strong enough, even, to turn away the barbarians the next time they come knocking.
Above and Below is a mashup of town-building and storytelling where you and up to three friends compete to build the best village above and below ground. In the game, you send your villagers to perform jobs like exploring the cave, harvesting resources, and constructing houses. Each villager has unique skills and abilities, and you must decide how to best use them. You have your own personal village board, and you slide the villagers on this board to various areas to indicate that they've been given jobs to do. Will you send Hanna along on the expedition to the cave? Or should she instead spend her time teaching important skills to one of the young villagers?
A great cavern lies below the surface, ready for you to explore-- this is where the storytelling comes in. When you send a group of villagers to explore the depths, one of your friends reads what happens to you from a book of paragraphs. You'll be given a choice of how to react, and a lot will depend on which villagers you brought on the expedition, and who you're willing to sacrifice to succeed. The book of paragraphs is packed with encounters of amazing adventure, randomly chosen each time you visit the cavern.
At the end of the game, the player with the most well-developed village wins!
The Expanded Edition of the game will include extra content that will not be in the standard retail version! Expanded Edition copies will be available at conventions but in limited quantities. All stretch goals are meant to enhance the Expanded Edition and will not be included in the standard retail version.
Expanded Edition Stretch Goals
Hi, I'm Ryan Laukat. I designed and illustrated Above and Below. I love designing games and creating new worlds. I started Red Raven Games 3 years ago so I could share my creations with others. Because of all the amazing support of backers on Kickstarter, I was able to print and produce my other game designs, including:
- Empires of the Void
- City of Iron
- Eight-Minute Empire
- Eight-Minute Empire: Legends
- City of Iron: Experts and Engines
- The Ancient World
- Eight-Minute Empire: Lost Lands
- Artifacts, Inc.
Above and Below includes a book of encounters packed with amazing adventure and wondrous tales. Read excerpts from the contributing writers!
We're extremely excited that Alf Seegert has decided to lend his writing talents to Above and Below. Alf is an internationally published designer of Euro-style strategy games. His board games have been featured on BBC America's The Nerdist, in WIRED Magazine, The New Yorker, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Guardian UK, MTV Geek, The Onion AV Club, The Huffington Post, GAMES Magazine, and TheOneRing.net. Alf holds a masters degree in Philosophy and an MA and PhD in Literature. He is Assistant Professor (Lecturer) in English at the University of Utah. See his homepage at http://www.alfseegert.com. Check out his recent games, Fantastiqa and Musée.
We're delighted to have Malorie Laukat as part of the writing crew. She is a passionate reader, writer, and game player, and has devoted hundreds of hours helping develop games published by Red Raven such as Above and Below, City of Iron, The Ancient World, Artifacts, Inc, and Eight-Minute Empire: Legends.

International shipments will be subject to customs charges depending on the country to which you are shipping.
If you select the new EUROPE backer level, your copy of the game will be shipped from within the EU.
It is likely that Above and Below will be printed later by local publishers in French, German, and possibly other European languages. Please take this into consideration when deciding if you would like to pledge.
Risks and challenges
This is my ninth Kickstarter project, and with each project, I could not have printed and produced them without the support of Kickstarter backers. Above and Below has been tested and tweaked to get the balance right. Much of the art is finished and the game is ready, but it won't see the light of day without the funds needed to see that the game is printed.
There are many other challenges to making sure this project is successful. Because of occasional unforeseen events, it is common for board game production to be delayed. I've done all I can to ensure that this game will be delivered on time if funded. Of course, delays can happen, but most of my projects have been delivered early.
Another challenge is making sure that all the files and rules are correct when sent to the printer. I've done the graphic design and artwork for many games. My experience helps me ensure a smooth pre-production process.
With your help, we can have the funds to print the game, overcome the various obstacles that are in the way, and make sure you are delivered a quality product.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
