Earlier this week we met with Matthew Smith - author of legendary ZX Spectrum games Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy. Matthew signed the new prints which are now being prepared for despatch to the four dozen or so backers who selected them as rewards. A ‘survey’ of selected backers will be issued in the next few days (to confirm delivery addresses) and the rewards are likely to be despatched w/c 14th July, 2014, (within 14 days or so of the original estimate).

Grab One of the Few Remaining Manic Miner (Bug Byte) Signed, Limited-Edition Collectors’ Prints / Artist’s Proofs & Help Fund the Recreation of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum.

Get them before they’re gone from here.

Also, all five (#1-5 of 5) Manic Miner (Bug Byte) Signed, Artist’s Proofs have just been released for sale. Finally for the moment, a couple of weeks ago we wrote to the appeal’s backers promising to “… issue a further direct message … regarding the 1st physical proto-type (a.k.a. the ‘Golden Sample’) just as soon as it seems prudent to do so.” Well, we’re pleased to be able to report that overnight we received confirmation that the latest revision of the firmware that’s to be incorporated in the 'Golden Sample' - that is the proto-type which not only looks but also behaves like the Bluetooth ZX Spectrum device - is a potential release candidate. We’re about to design and execute a test plan for the device’s firmware and once that’s been completed successfully we should be in a position to order the 1st physical proto-type.

We’ll issue a further direct message to backers (or a project update) just as soon as it seems prudent to do so.

Until then, thank you for your continued support and please do order a print or proof whilst you can.

Of the 100 prints, and 10 artists proofs which formed the two series, fewer than a handful of the lowest numbered are available for purchase.

Matthew Smith will create a third limited-edition by signing 50, individually numbered, digitally re-mastered collectors’ prints of Manic Miner; along with 5 artists’ proofs. The prints will be based on Bug Byte's cassette inlay art for Manic Miner. Preparations for the creation of the third series, (82% of the prints from which are already sold) are in hand and they will be delivered to backers in June 2014, sooner if possible.

Here’re a brief reminder of the approximate timeline and how we wrote about it when the appeal was launched in December 2013. The timeline (in brackets) has been added for illustration only.

The order for the ‘golden sample’ will not be placed until this appeal’s goal has been achieved and we are in funds. Currently that’s anticipated to be in around 8 weeks from the launch date of this appeal. (Estimated Feb ’14)

It will take a further 4 to 6 weeks for the soft tooling to be made and the first ‘golden sample’ to be delivered. (Estimated Apr ’14)

On delivery of the ‘golden sample’, we will be able to evaluate the prototype’s functional characteristics against the feature set and its physical characteristics against the documentation. If necessary, we will be able to make changes to the firmware to perfect the functional characteristics. However, material changes to the physical characteristics may require new soft tooling and a new ‘golden sample.’" (Estimated May ’14. July ’14, if new golden sample required.)

The order for the first 1,000 production units will not be placed until the ‘golden sample’ has been delivered, evaluated and accepted. Thereafter it will take 4 to 6 weeks for the hard tooling to be made. The first 1,000 production units will take a further 4 weeks to be made and they should arrive in the UK 4 weeks later." (Estimated Sep ’14)

Additionally, we expect to be issuing surveys (to gather your details) as we approach the estimated delivery date for each of the rewards. There will (probably) be one survey issued per reward but we’ll know more about that as we prepare to send out the first survey next month.

For at least some of this week and next, we’ll be doing some of the housekeeping which the demands of running the appeal caused us to postpone since before Christmas. Consequently Updates may be relatively thin on the ground until the latter part of next week.

PS: we expect to be issuing any and all significant (and perhaps even insignificant updates) about the project to the appeal’s backers as a priority. We will also be issuing some information to those (1,000+) who subscribed for the Newsletter at BluetoothZXSpectrum.com If you’re a subscriber and you’re concerned by the prospect of some duplication, then you might want to consider unsubscribing. If you want to be sure of receiving every scrap of news, then stay tuned.
