About

The Alps Alturas Mountaintop Sessions: A Film About Creativity, Mountains and Challenge

Production starts in August 2016.

Mountains of Creativity

We all suspect that the environment changes our art.  This project puts the idea to the test by isolating our musicians in the mountains.

The Challenge

Cameras will capture this week in the life of nine diverse artists sequestered in an isolated setting.

  • One mountain top site at 6500' elevation
  • 9 musicians -> one newly formed group
  • 7 days to write and polish an album of new music
  • Grand Finale -> Full-Moon concert, on site

Why support the Alps Alturus Mountain Top Sessions (or any music, really)?

  • Support independent artists in maintaining creative freedom
  • This ambitious project puts a group of artists and volunteers in a setting with significant logistical challenges. With you as supporters, we will create a professional grade production to honour the artists’ creative process.
  • Supporters become a member of this unique project, as reflected in the rewards.
  • Finally... Come on - don't you want to see what happens with this crazy idea...

The Musicians:

Our Feature Performers

Fraser Black - Fraser has been a big part of rock and roll in BC, fronting bands such as Soul Tribe and Arthur Funkarelli.  Fraser is a tasteful and gifted guitar player with a powerhouse voice.

Freya - Martine Denbok and Noel Fudge form the Slocan Valley's Freya, a guitar/violin duo of incredible skill and passion.

Betty Supple - Betty is a core, founding member of Victoria's funky heart folk trio, Dirty Grace. Betty and Dirty Grace have become a staple of the Canadian indie music scene.

Dominique Fraissard - Dom is a much admired songwriter/musician in the international folk/acoustic genre with a very original twist of urban transfer to his work. He has opened for the likes of Jack Johnson, John Butler Trio and the Waifs.

House Band

Drums: Robin Sitig.  Robin is a Selkirk Contemporary Music School grad with years of experience in music ranging from folk, to heavy metal, to jazz, to dance standards.

Guitar: Jeremy Down.  Jer has played guitar on cruiseships and at festivals, in folk, punk, and rock bands, as well as delivering his own brand of contemporary pop.

Bass: J Buttle. J has played bass and mandolin in bluegrass, funk-rock and zydeco-reggae bands.

Piano: We are currently courting two pianists.  They are both exciting and we cannot wait to tell you all about them...

The Producers:

J Buttle teaches economics at Selkirk College. In his spare time, he takes on crazy music projects. J's project management qualifications stem principally from his professional career, where he's been a project coordinator and research project manager for projects budgeted up to $20M.

Tyrell Jordan is the founder and soul of A Manor of Sight & Sound, the Kootenay's most dedicated sound and film tracking studio.  Tyrell has been playing, recording and producing music for over twenty years, most recently through the studio he and tech-master Howard Bearham built in Rosebery, BC.

Jay Moritz comes to the project from a decade of film and television production in the lower mainland. As an assistant director and production manager, Jay has successfully guided over thirty productions and their crews to completion.

The Crew:

So many have signed on in incredible, generous and creative ways.  We will have live visual art production during the grand finale.  We will have an entire logistics crew helping with transportation and ensuring that our musicians have a trouble free week.  We have a camp cooking crew.  We have the entire Manor of Sight and Sound production team volunteering.

One final call for support

As creative people helping to support the arts, we've all given to each other's projects over the years.  We've all helped out at festivals, events, with local non-profits and in drumming support for other arts projects around the world.  Please help us show support to those who've volunteered for this project.

Risks and challenges

This project is fully owned and directed by the production team, clear of any legal impediments to release upon completion.

The nature of this project does entail a unique risk in that it takes place in an uncontrolled natural environment. To mitigate location risks associated with forest fires (a real risk in south-eastern BC), several locations have been scouted for the project. The backup plan has a backup plan.

To mitigate against inclement weather, a system of weather shelters has been acquired to protect equipment and the artists. Further, to allow for evening play, when temperatures drop, propane outdoor heaters will keep the musicians comfortable on the performance space.

Finally, if the weather is sufficiently bad to scuttle the week, we have a backup time. This would mean we would lose the full-moon, but could still produce the project.

We have backup musicians for each member of the 'house-band', and have a couple of alternate singer-songwriters identified in case of last minute cancellations by musicians.
