A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

Melodisq started when, as parents of young kids, we realized we could not share our love for music without resorting to cellphones or tablets. We were concerned with both the the lack of control over content it led to and the numerous studies showing how detrimental to children development overexposure to screens is. After all, Steve Jobs himself did not allow his kids to play with an iPad.
That is why we developed Melodisq: a music player that is so intuitive that a one year old know how use it, that leverages the benefits of digitized content while ensuring a controlled environment, and that does all of that without exposing kids to yet another screen. All of the fun, none of the harm!
Kids just have to swipe an actual physical object (we call them "disqs") in front of the player to start playing the content they love, may it be a song, a book, or even a story lovingly told by their parents.
Melodisq allows parents to easily customize blank disqs. In just a few clicks, you can attach to a disq any content your children love: an MP3 file, content from a streaming service such as Spotify (it does require a subscription to the service), or user generated content from yourself or the community. The next time the disq is swiped, the content will play. You can change and reconfigure the content of a disq as many times as you would like.
Disqs come as tokens for instance for songs, but also as stickers: stick one on a book, record yourself reading it, and voila, you have your own read-along book! We are also engaging with publishers to directly bring Melodisq compatible content to the stores.
Disqs are physical objects. Kids can play them, play with them, take them to their friends' houses or trade them on the playground. Disqs can be played on any Melodisq device.
You can also make the disq look the way you like: print a cover or watch your kids draw one themselves.
By recording yourself talking to your children or telling them a story, they can listen to the sound of your voice even when you are away.
We believe Melodisq can change the way children grow up in a connected age, taking the best of what technology has to offer while avoiding the worst. We need your help to build a future where parents can see the smile on their children's face when they bring them a new Melodisq song, read-along book, or story to listen to.
This Kickstarter campaign is the stepping stone towards the success of Melodisq: not only will it provide us with the means to finish designing and actually producing a first commercial batch of players, but most importantly it will help us spread the word and show parents everywhere that there technology can be a fit for kids' enjoyment, without suffering from any downside. The more Melodisq gets out there, the more people will understand that the alternative exists!
Melodisq is also designed to help create and share content for kids. We want to empower parents to create their own stories and tales they will share with their children, and to build memories that will last a life time. The platform allows parents to share their tales with the community, and in time, who knows, why not become a recognized master story teller!
One of our stretch goals for this campaign is an app specifically dedicated to easily record, arrange and share engaging tales to be listened to on the Melodisq.
Kids only have to swipe a disq and the music plays on the battery powered device. "Power users" can also press the big and handy backward/pause/forward buttons !
Neither magic nor rocket science, Melodisq uses simple, patent pending technology in an original way to bring music to your children. The player is connected to the cloud. When a disq is swiped, the player recognizes it and downloads the relevant song. The song is stored locally to be able to listen to it later with the wifi turned off.
The cloud platform is where parents log on to upload new songs and stories, browse those from the community and attach them to the disqs.
The player itself is initially configured through bluetooth with a smartphone app (iOS and Android) to set-up wifi passwords and Melodisq account.
We currently have a handful of fully functional Melodisq prototypes, but still have a lot of ground to cover before we can deliver a commercial ready batch, which is where Kickstarter comes in play!
- June 2017: Crowdfunding campaign
- June to November 2017: Design for manufacturing
- August to November 2017: Based on design, selection of manufacturing partner
- November to January 2017: Prepare manufacturing
- February 2018: Production
- March 2018: Shipping and delivery
We would love our project to become a reality, and certainly hope you will play a huge part in it. We want to focus our energy on delivering Melodisq, but also think of how it could become so much more. We have already planned for a couple of stretch goal to enhance the Melodisq experience should the campaign receive more support than we dare dream of:
- If the campaign reaches 150 000€: an iOS/Android app to record your tales, add sound effects and directly share them on the Melodisq platform for your kids to listen to.
- If the campaign reaches 300 000€: alternate color scheme for the Melodisq player.
Spread the word
Do you know someone who would be as excited as you about Melodisq? Share our campaign with them: the more the merrier!

Risks and challenges
We have a dream, passion (and working prototypes), but there is still a lot of ground to cover before the product can be delivered to your homes. Being passionate is part of the equation, being prepared on top of it is better still. There are still quite a few challenges and risks in front of us, the main ones we have identified bring:
- Production: we have fully functional prototypes but still need to convert their design into a mass production compatible one. The production partner for the consumer product has not been selected yet. The success of our Kickstarter campaign and the number of devices to be manufactured will have a significant impact on our selection of a partner for the design for manufacturing and for the manufacturing itself. This selection may lead to unforeseen delays.
- Sourcing: Melodisq currently uses standard parts, but as we finalize the production design we may select to design custom components which may lead to additional delays.
- Certifications: Melodisq is both an electronic product and a product for children. We want to make sure it will be up to all and every standards set in the various countries it will be shipped to. The certification process can be complex and long and may lead to additional delays. We plan on working with specialized consulting companies to help us go through that stage.
Have diner with us in Paris anytime + get a Melodisq player with 15 disq when it comes out. Our company is definitely not worth that much (and we'd talk about our project for free!), but if you are a fervent supporter of our vision and have money and an evening to spare, that's the reward you want!
