About this project
We came up with the idea for the 8-Bit
Bar when we decided St. Louis doesn't need another ordinary bar. How
many bars are there here for those of us who would rather watch
Battlestar Galactica than a football game? None that we could think
We decided that St. Louis nerds and geeks NEED a place to congregate and know that they are in good company- the company of fellow individuals who share an interest in the less mainstream pursuits, such as science fiction, technology, video games, anime, intellectual pursuits, and almost anything else "geeky" one can imagine.
Our dream is to create a social hub that brings people together in an environment that enables them to use their common interests and passions to build relationships with the business, the community and each other.
That said, in the spirit of fostering such a community, we welcome any and all ideas, suggestions, and help in realizing this dream of ours. We want YOU to be a part of creating this safe-haven for anyone and everyone who relishes in the unusual, the imaginative, and the geeky.

Geeks United Can Make this Happen
We have over 1200 enthusiastic Facebook fans ready to walk through our doors . Everyone involved in this project has contributed large amounts of pro-bono time and talent to get the project this far. Literally, this has been a labor of love for everyone from the designers and architects, to our artists, musicians and videographers. Now we need your help to make what will be an awesome place a reality which is why we're going to Kickstarter for your help!
What Your Money Will be Used
Desinging, building and opening a Geek Bar (while fun!) isn't cheap. Collaborating with local architects and designers, we've estimated the total costs to start the bar will be around $68,000.00. While this wouldn't cover all our costs, it would help to cover the following expenses:
Plumbers and Electricians.
Materials and build out.
Capital equipment - think: coolers, refrigerators, ice machines, dishwashers and sinks
Point of Sales System
- Property improvements - think: flooring, lighting, painting and other upgrades.
How you can help
1. Donate generously. We are on the
cusp of creating something great for St. Louis, PLEASE help us
realize our shared dream.
2. Invite everyone you can possibly think of to donate even if it's just $5.
3. Share our Kickstarter page, our website, one of our updates, tweet about us or just re-post on your wall.
4. Tell friends and family members who you think might also be interested;
5. Promote us to the media! We're underdogs and we're doing something that is unique. These are precisely the the type of stories that get covered.
Thank you for taking the time to read through our Kickstarter campaign. We are greatly appreciative for you taking the time out to read about your project.
Remember that we ONLY get the funding if we reach our goal, and likewise you only get your rewards if we reach our goal - this is ALL OR NOTHING.
Be a part of making St. Louis a cool place to live!
YES! You also get the $25, $15, $8, and $5 dollar rewards
Donate generously! This is all or nothing and we only get the funding if we reach our goal.
Tell everyone you can think of. The more people that are aware of the project, the better chance we have to make it happen.
Post about us on Facebook pages - especially those people who have a huge reach.
Tweet about us to everyone - especially well known geeks and nerds.
We've gone to great lengths to estimate our costs as well as the income we need to initially be sustainable, and then grow the business. The business plan took roughly 9 months to write, and we've estimated our costs on the high-side of everything. We have a number of well established bar owners who are working as consultants with us on this.
As far as driving business - from our research we've calculated that the market for the bar is ~86,000 people. In order to make a decent profit, we need to bring in 860 + people a week (that's .01%) of our target market and have them spend on average $12. So that's more/less ~100 people a day. If you're open from 3pm - 12:45 you're talking about ~11 people per hour. If we stick with with our marketing plan, which we believe will bring in more than 11 people/per hour on weekdays, we see the bar as being very sustainable with weekends making up the rest.
This is where our partnerships with local universities, cultural institutions and organizations come in; our Barchievement program; our Kickstarter rewards; and events that that we're planning will help us to drive traffic, and grow the business.
No. We're not distributing the business plan to anyone at this time.
Our Barchievements is a bonus feature that customers can take advantage of to add to their 8-Bit Bar experience. There are over 180 Barchievements that range from simple things that you would do anyway at the bar (buying a beer for example), to more complicated or involved challenges (How about having a romantic meal at the bar on valentine's day?).
How Barchievements Work
The Barchievement system will work by means of a stamp (on our side) and a small passport sized book that you will receive when you decide to participate. In the front of the book there will be a character creation sheet. How you build your character will determine the discounts that you receive on our Barchievement members night - think something like this - "I create an Necromancer for my class - with that I get $1 off Stouts, Porters, Spirits and Shots." We're also working on creating a running faction system that will enable you to compete with the enemy faction to earn benefits for your faction at the end of the month. This is still in its infancy, but we hope to be able to implement it by opening.
What is a Barchievement Point and what do I do With my Barchievement Points?
For each Barchievement that you accomplish, you will receive a stamp worth "X" number of points. The number of points that a Barchievement is worth, is more or less equal to the difficulty in accomplishing any given Barchievement.
We're putting together a number of rewards for the Barchievement system. Naturally at the lower milestones, they are somewhat small. For instance a reusable vinyl sticker. However, at the higher levels they get more interesting - 1 Free PBR every visit for example, is one idea that we're thinking about using. The rewards are still being teased out, and we don't want to take all the fun out of the rewards just yet.
If you have one that you'd like to see on the achievement list, http://mailto:email@example.com.
We're working with a team of people to get our license. It's a very complicated question, and there are many aspects of this question that we just can't discuss at this time. Sorry. 8 (
