About this project
Hey everyone! Thanks for checking out this project. Please watch the video above and/or read the text below to learn more about JackPod!
The Jackpod! is a truly universal smartphone-to-tripod adapter that is lightweight, easy-to-use, and low-cost. The JackPod! is designed and manufactured in the USA and is compatible with iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and more!
The JackPod! is offered for $10 or less and a complete solution of one JackPod! + one Pedco Ultrapod is offered for $20 or less. Check out the rewards to the right.
The quality of photos taken with smartphones continues to improve at an astounding pace, making the traditional point-and-shoot camera practically irrelevant. Why carry around two devices when one can do the trick?
The JackPod! will work with iPhone 5, 4/4s, 3g, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry, Nokia, etc. All smartphones with a headphone jack and camera functionality will work, regardless of shape, size, or case.
In our minds, one of the last advantages point-and-shoot cameras has in comparison to smartphones is their ability to be universally mounted to a tripod using a standard 1/4" 20-thread screw & socket. The JackPod! removes that advantage.
Many people have designed smartphone-to-tripod adapters before, some even claiming universal functionality, but all are limited by size, complexity, device, case interference, and price. Many adapters have moving parts, require a phone to be caseless, are prone to breaking, etc. All cost $15 or $20, often more than the price of a mini tripod itself.
I knew there must be a better way. I wished that smartphone manufacturers could just agree to include a universal port that to be used for mounting.
Then it dawned on me - THEY DO! The headphone jack is that universal port.
With that realization, the JackPod! was born. Using the headphone jack is truly universal as it exists on all smartphones and it can be used with any case whatsoever. Our patent-pending design uses a headphone jack to stabilize a phone's movement.
Weighing just 0.2 ounces, you never need to take it off your tripod. The JackPod! is an ideal solution for the lightweight traveler or person on the go.
With a mini tripod, your tripod solution can be ultra-portable. You can carry the JackPod! and a mini tripod in a bag, purse, or even your pocket for use at a moment's notice wherever you are!
Quick and Easy to Use
The JackPod! uses a standard 1/4" 20-thread fitting to quickly and easily attach to all standard tripods with just a few turns. Using a strong injection-molded plastic and a commitment to detail, you can rest assured that your phone is safe on the JackPod! It even works upside-down! When connecting your phone to the JackPod! you will feel and hear a 'click' to let you know it is secure.
Universal Mounting Solution
The JackPod! is a patent-pending solution that allows you to quickly secure your smartphone by simply placing your phone on the JackPod! using the headphone jack. This is the first truly universal solution that works on all makes of smartphones with any case that leaves the headphone jack accessible.
Don't worry - even if your phone is mounted upside down (depending on the location of your headphone jack), your phone's software will compensate.
We designed the JackPod! to work in both horizontal and vertical applications.
Unleash your phone's full potential!
Being able to use a tripod with your smartphone improves the performance and functionality of your phone dramatically. Dozens of great apps exist to enable features such as:
- great still photos
- group shots using a timer
- smoother videos
- perfect panoramas
- long exposures (night photography)
- time-lapse movies
- stop motion scenes
Due to the simple design and functionality, we are able to offer the JackPod! at a very attractive price point. Unlike other "universal" solutions for this problem, the JackPod! won't cost you more than a new case or a tripod itself. The JackPod! is $10 or less, including shipping anywhere in the USA. (Check out the rewards on the upper right of your screen)
We can also offer the Pedco UltraPod to backers for a great price when packaged with the JackPod! The Pedco UltraPod is a lightweight mini tripod that works great in combination with the JackPod! and is made right here in the USA. Learn more about the UltraPod here. You can get the complete solution for $20 or less.
Is it ready for manufacturing?
Yes! I am a strong supporter of Kickstarter and I love helping others get their ideas off the ground. Since June of 2011, I have backed 25 projects, mostly designs, and definitely understand the frustration associated with delayed rewards. I have done a ton of legwork before posting this campaign to ensure that shipping of rewards can occur in a very timely fashion. We have final prototypes in hand, determined assembly methods, and tested the product extensively.
All the components are sourced from US companies and the JackPod! will be manufactured in the United States. Packaging is going to be minimal, recycled, and recyclable.
Here is an image of the proposed packaging for the JackPod!
What is the funding for?
To get the project off the ground! Besides the costs of the product itself (think materials, manufacturing, and shipping), we also have a great deal of overhead costs to cover such as development, patent fees, prototyping, and marketing. Kickstarter allows us to see if the market for our idea exists (I believe it does) and pre-fund some of these expenses so that we can meet manufacturing minimums to be able to deliver you a quality product at a reasonable cost.
Who Designed This?
The JackPod! is the creation of Joe Simon, a habitual creator who is always on the lookout for solutions to everyday annoyances. I have built prototypes for dozens of different products, some better than others, each meant to make doing something easier, better, or more efficient. Our apartment is constantly filled with metal, sawdust, discarded parts, and sketches. I have an MBA and Master of Architecture and work as a engineer in energy efficiency and renewable energy. When I'm not working or constructing new objects, I try to take advantage of all that Colorado has to offer (i.e. biking, skiing, hiking, rafting, tubing, snowshoeing, beer, etc.). This is my first (but probably not last) Kickstarter campaign.
Now you should back the project! Choose a reward and get your very own JackPod! in the near future so you can ditch the point-and-shoot camera and use your smartphone to take great photos without limitation. It would make our cat Lou very happy.
Thanks for your time and interest!
Risks and challenges
Creating a new product is inherently difficult and risky. As described above, every time I consider backing a product on Kickstarter, I ask myself - Is it ready for manufacturing? Has the creator done enough legwork to really understand what delivering the product on time will take?
Our answer to these question is YES!
I have done a ton of development and research before posting this campaign to ensure that shipping of rewards can occur in a very timely fashion. The photos you see above contain the final prototypes & the video uses the product extensively. My friends and I have been using various versions of the prototype for months and have been refining it continuously. We are confident it is ready to market and that you will love it.
All the components are sourced from US companies and the JackPod! will be assembled in Colorado. Packaging is going to be minimal, recycled, and recyclable. Risks exist with regard to the creation of the injection molds, potentially delaying the overall schedule.
We will continually monitor all aspects of the project and look forward to providing frequent updates to our backers throughout the process.
We are ready to deliver - all we need now is to confirm that we have the interest to justify production. That is where you come in - so become a backer today to help make the JackPod! a reality!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes! The JackPod! will be made with high quality injection molded plastic that is selected for its strength, rigidity, and texture. Even the 3D printed model prototype we have been using for the last several months has withstood all we have thrown at it and has not broken.
While most native smartphone camera apps don't have these features, all platforms host hundreds of camera apps that can give your smartphone all the capabilities of a point-and-shoot and more! Both paid and free apps exist that add timers, panorama functionality, timelapse, stop motion, and long shutter (night photography) capabilities. Once you start looking, the possibilities are endless.
Yes! By having two different molded plugs, you can mount your phone in either a horizontal or vertical position without having to remove the JackPod! from your tripod.
Not easily. We made the plugs ever-so-slightly larger than a typical headphone connector so it fits very securely. You can easily hang the phone from the JackPod! and shake it around (watch our video) without worry of the phone coming loose. It is still easy to remove with a pull, however.
No. The JackPod! uses a strong, durable plastic that simply rests inside your phone's headphone jack. It is very similar to the headphone jack "http://www.amazon.com/b…" used my millions of people worldwide (though we aren't really sure why they are so popular).
We are patent pending for the concept of using a phone's TRS connector (headphone jack) to restrict bi-axial rotation. This means we are, and always will be, the only solution that will be as simple, effective, universal, and cost effective.
Occasionally when used in a horizontal position with mini tripods, the center of balance is too far off center. There may be some positions where tripods have a tendency to tip. We have not found a tripod yet, however, where the JackPod! doesn't work when the phone is positioned over a leg. You might just have to take a little care to align the phone with one of the tripod legs.
There has been some concern raised regarding the stress placed on the phone through the use of the JackPod!. I can say that in our months of testing, this stress has not caused any issue with our phones. We recognize this concern, however, and will work to ensure that the JackPod! doesn't cause this type unintended issue.
