You’re invited to be part of the team.

Not content to stay on earth?  EXOS Aerospace Systems & Technologies, Inc. would like you to join with them and the former core employees of Armadillo Aerospace to embark on a renewed adventure- building commercial sub-orbital rockets that will carry pretty much anything you can think of (that fits into the current or optional “expanded” cargo bay) to space and back in just a few minutes.

What is Sub-Orbital?

Three minutes or more of zero-g and the vacuum of space await your creativity and lifelong desire to send something to that final frontier. We're talking over 60 miles up, not near-space, but past the Von Karmen line to true-space.

How We Will Do This

Since we've done this before, we have a great head start on the work of redesigning this awesome vehicle. We are going to improve the design by utilizing more advanced materials to decrease weight and carry more of your ideas higher and faster than before. New flight software will be developed by ex-NASA PhD's and state-of-the-art guidance equipment will guide your payload to pin-point accuracy well over 328,000 feet above the desert floor of Spaceport America in New Mexico. This new rocket will be capable of carrying over 100lbs to space and bring it literally back to your feet with the precision parachute recovery system. We can carry a single large payload or dozens of small individual ones on every flight, and we even have the technology to provide live streaming video available along with real-time telemetry and data in both directions to payloads that need it.

Development Phases

Phase 1 (where we are now): We are going through the entire existing design updating/upgrading as prudent based on past knowledge and experience on this class of vehicle. The enhancement includes: integrating new “optional” lighter tank designs, implementing parachute improvements (driven by technology advancement), engine bay reorganization (to support CNC formed tubing use, simplify layout), revamping the electronics design (technology upgrade), and delivering a set of hardware to the (ex NASA) software team. This effort will take 3-6 months, and your contributions will fund this, as well as provide you with the initial rewards listed here. Additionally, you will have the knowledge that you helped to kickstart a space venture and support a company that has a vision to introduce what we believe to be a “disruptive innovation” specifically in the realm of cancer and biomedical research. Our team has already proven itself as one of the most successful new space companies in suborbital, and, with SARGE we will demonstrate commercial viability putting suborbital “within financial reach” for all research ventures.

Phase 2 (Funding): This phase will be funded by private investors or VC’s. This phase is being worked in parallel, is well on the way (as we evaluate and select the best strategic partner) but takes longer (largely due to legal reviews) and we can’t delay as “the future is now”. This is where we buy most of the hardware and actually construct the final design that you helped us create.

Phase 3 (Flying payloads): This phase commences about 9-12 months from the start of the project as we complete our “checkout flights” and begin flying commercially with a manifest of paying customers. The contributors from phase 1 are the lucky ones that get to experience these initial flights, have their items flown to space, visit our factory, and one “winning contributor” will be the honorary launch-control-officer and will actually "press-the-button" to start the rocket on its way to space.

Risks and challenges

Spaceflight is risky, however, there are two main risks: schedule and cost. To mitigate these we have the experience gained from having developed and flown dozens of craft hundreds of times. Along with the design and flights made with the previous generation sub-orbital launchers, we know we have the knowledge and experience to do it again. We already have a reliable engine, robust electronics and the world’s best fly-back parachute system. The most significant schedule risk is with suppliers and includes integrating the new tank construction with all of the previous hardware. The tank integration schedule risk is basic engineering though, and the level of effort is understood (if not, added resources can be a mitigation consideration). Cost risks mostly grow out of schedule slips and vendor failures to meet delivery times. The best mitigation to cost will be our past experience with the vendors, and having built and flown so many rockets that we can “flex” to support a Rapid Protoyping program that even NASA knows us for. Most significantly, as this is simply an enhanced build of something we’ve built and flown before, we understand the dynamics of manufacture well enough to manage the schedule to “work around” most vendor delivery issues.
