Snöbarn is an electrified folk/alternative band from Duluth, MN. The name Snöbarn means "snow children" in Swedish; Ari and Gaelynn both have deep Scandinavian roots. Together Ari and Gaelynn have been playing shows around Northern Minnesota for a year and a half. Snöbarn started out as a duo, but have since added two percussionists and a bass player... and now it is a full, 5-piece band! Ariane sings and plays electric guitar and piano. Gaelynn plays fiddle and sings the harmonies. Bryan (Lefty) Johnson and Chad Erlemeier keep their rhythm and George Ellsworth fills out the sound on bass. Ari and Gaelynn write all original songs, inspired by their intricate and meaningful friendship in Northern Minnesota.
In the past year, Ari and Gaelynn have written 11 fresh, new songs and they really would like to put them on an album. Each song has a different feel; their eclectic writing styles make their music delightfully varied. They aim to write songs that are catchy but not campy, thought-provoking but not despairing: their sound is a product of an honest experience in Northern Minnesota. Snöbarn's music includes rich vocal harmonies, layered rhythms, and intricate instrumentation.
Ari and Gaelynn are planning to create their debut album at Sacred Heart Music Studio, a rare and beautiful church turned recording studio in Duluth, Minnesota. Alan Sparhawk (Low, Retribution Gospel Choir, The Murder of Crows) and Eric Swanson have agreed to work with Snöbarn on recording, mixing, and mastering the album. Duluth-based photographer and graphic designer, Shawn Stigsell, created the promotional pieces for this Kickstarter campaign. In addition, SkatRadioh will be collaborating with Snöbarn to design and lay out the artwork. The album packaging will be hand screen printed to give it a unique, tactile quality. Now Ari and Gaelynn are looking for the funds to make all this happen!
Snöbarn is asking for $3,200 because that should cover the basic costs of recording, mixing, mastering, cover art, and printing the album. HOWEVER, there will inevitably be outlying costs, such as: extra studio time, additional printing costs, music videographers, merchandise, travel expenses, and future promotional opportunities. So any funds raised over $3,200 will be put to good use! Please continue to donate to Snöbarn's Kickstarter project, even if they reach their goal! Your support will impact the band on many levels, and they appreciate it more than you may realize. Creating this album isn't just about making a CD for Ari and Gaelynn, it's a huge opportunity for artistic growth and it will develop their friendship in ways they can't even imagine right now.
YESSS! WE REACHED OUR GOAL OF $3,200!!! SO, WHY KEEP GOING?
Thank you so much to those of you who have already donated! Because of you, our project has guaranteed funding! That is an awesome feeling!
But we are asking people to continue supporting our project, because ultimately we would like to raise a GRAND TOTAL OF $5,000 by February 4th! We are hoping to raise that extra $1,800 because we would really love to make the album and CD jackets as lovely as possible, and we want to pay a fair price to the artists involved (Shawn Stigsell and SkatRadioh are collaborating and we're pretty pumped to see what they come up with together).
We also found out that pressing our limited-release vinyl is going to cost at bit more than planned, but as it is a prize for all funders over $50, we gotta make sure we get those out!
And last, but not least, we are realizing there will be some unforeseen, unglamorous costs with this Kickstarter project, such as paying for the packaging and postage to mail all our lovely backers their CDs, vinyls, and buttons! We're pretty sure that we'll find out about still more unexpected expenses, but we are determined to keep the total cost of this album under $5,000! If we end up having to pay some of the remaining costs out of pocket, so be it... But if we get a chance to record the entire album DEBT-FREE that would be a dream come true!!!
Please keep spreading the word about our project, and thank you so much for being a part of Snöbarn's debut album!

P.S. Check out a live radio performance of our newest song, "There's God to Be More"! We played it on KUWS on January 17th, 2013, and are very excited to perfect it (and many other songs) in the recording studio this February!

YES!!! We definitely plan to make the album available for sale as a digital download! We're thinking it'll be up on iTunes, but there's a chance we'll go with Bandcamp. We'll probably throw a couple songs up on Soundcloud for streaming as well. But either way, we'll keep you posted, on Kickstarter and on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/snobarn!
