About this project
We're making 100 butt patches!
This project is the intersection of our love for creating beautiful, recognizable icons and the fact that everyone has a butt. We sketched a bunch of icons and turned one of our favorite designs into a limited edition patch. Right now we only have one, but we want to make a bunch more so people can put them on stuff! It's as simple as that. They're funny and they bring people joy, which is our main goal as designers anyway.
In the process of narrowing it down to one icon, we drew 25 other butts. Enough to make a font, called Buttdings! Every backer tier gets you a copy, and you can get it on its own for the one-time price of $1! It'll never be that low again if we sell it elsewhere so get it while you can!
We sketched a lot with a sharpie on paper with the help of some friends. You can apply the design process to pretty much anything!
We then digitized some of the best sketches and put the project on hold for a while.
Eventually we decided digital versions weren't enough, and so we painstakingly tweaked the design, fine-tuning the line weight and spacing to optimize it for patch format. Right now, we're in the process of making similar adjustments to all the characters for the Buttdings font.
If this project is successful, we'll place the order for the patches immediately. The font is ready to go, and we'll send everyone who backed this project a link to download it.
In case something goes wrong, we decided to leave about a month as a buffer. We want to make sure every patch is perfect! While we're waiting for the delivery, we'll stamp 100 envelopes and mail them out as soon as we get them.
Risks and challenges
For Buttdings, all we need to do is fine-tune the linework and run it through font-making software. This will take a day or two of diligent work, and they'll be sent right when this project wraps up. We're definitely not the first people to make a symbols font, but it's our first time.
The patch in the photos was made on a friend's expensive and slow home setup, and it's not quite perfect if you get super close to it. The industrial machines will do what industrial machines do, and we're confident the quality will be excellent. If it's not, this would delay the project, not stop it.
The bottom line: there are tons of great patch suppliers out there—we're not going to settle for a low-quality product. We don't have prior crowdfunding experience (that's why we're starting small!), but our eyes are sharp and we are vigilant.
