The Year is 1925...
... airships dot the skies, shining cities sprawl and tower over the citizenry, and the American Civil War rages on without an end in sight. This is the world of Dahlia.
The South has just created a terrible new weapon; a super soldier—part man, part machine. In response, the North resurrects an agent killed in action: her name is Dahlia and her quest for revenge will either destroy the nation, or unite it forever in peace.
The Project: Book One (150 Pages)
My name is Jonathan Stark and I’m a writer and editor in Portland, Oregon. Together with my friend and writing partner, Max Lewis, we created Dahlia, a black and white graphic novel to be released in two books.
The script is complete, we’ve hired an amazing local artist, Mac Cooper, to illustrate, and he’s already finalized the art for a portion of the first book—some of which you can see by going to our website.
Our Kickstarter goal is to bring you Book One—the first 150 pages of the story. Book One ends on an exciting note and sets up the events for Book Two, the 160 page conclusion.
Of course, we’d love to send you BOTH books for the price of one, so take a look at our stretch goal!!
Where Does the Money Go?
- First off, Kickstarter and Amazon take about 10% off the top.
- After that, our top priority is paying our artist, Mac Cooper, for the long hours and hard work he puts into the illustration and inking—which you can see from the incredible detail in the twenty-five pages on our website. In order to finish the comic within a reasonable amount of time, Mac will have to devote himself full-time to Dahlia at the exclusion of other work. We can’t ask him to starve while he does that.
- Third, we have to cover printing costs (acquiring ISBNs, paying the set-up and printing fees, and shipping). This cost will account for a sizable portion of what you are helping fund.
- Finally, any additional funds raised will go towards achieving our stretch goal (see below), which is about bringing our backers more content for their dollar.
Our favorite Kickstarter campaigns are those that seek to involve the backer in the final product. We want to take that idea to the next level with Dahlia; we don’t just want to crowd fund this graphic novel, we want to crowd fill it.
If you look at our prizes you will see that some of them offer backers the chance to appear as characters in the graphic; like supporting actors or extras in a film. In writing the script we have created opportunities for backers of either gender to appear as characters. We also have roles open for backers to have a few lines in the comic. Either way, this is your chance to become a part of a steampunk world.
When the graphic novel is published, it will include an index at the back; a “cast of characters” that lists which donor is playing which character and on what page(s) they appear.
Special Prize: The Ravens
Experienced and deadly, The Ravens are a team of totally kick-ass commandos that join our main character on an impossible mission into the heart of enemy territory. Think space-marines from ALIENS or Arnold’s crew in PREDATOR. And seven backers have the chance to become one of them in Dahlia. This is the ultimate crowd-filling prize we’re offering.
Backers who choose a Raven prize will have some input on how we design your character. Of course it will look like you, but you can help us out with some of the side details, as well. Have a weapon you’d like to use? We’ll put it in. Have a nickname you want to go by? You will be called that. The dialogue and plots for The Ravens is mostly pre-written but we will adjust it a little to fit in with what you’ve told us. All suggestions are subject to our final approval.
Special Prize: Early Bird
The first forty people to choose the special "early bird" prize will receive a signed physical print copy of the twenty-five pages currently posted online, including the color cover. This is an extremely exclusive prize, and what's more—you'll get it at the end of our Kickstarter whether we make our funding or not, just as a way of saying thanks for believing in the project.
Stretch Goal: TWO BOOKS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE
We have one stretch goal: at $55,000, we will produce Book Two, all 160 pages of it! All backers receiving the first book will have the second edition included in their prize for no extra charge. (Those who only pledged for the PDF will only receive PDF copies). When Book Two is unlocked, we will also up the limits on the crowd-filling prizes, as more opportunities to appear will be available.
Risks and challenges
I have a lot of familiarity with Kickstarter. Last year I helped market a successful Kickstarter, Ambient Environments, which not only met its goals, but delivered its product ahead of schedule.
I also have a master’s degree in publishing and have worked as a full-time editor and project manager for several authors. I know how to navigate the industry and achieve deadlines with a team. Just check out www.whoisdahlia.com, we never missed a release date for the art and kept fans updated with weekly blog posts as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
