About this project
WE DID IT! We made our mark. But, obviously the more pledges that come in the better we'll be able to market and distribute the record once it's been created. So, we've decided to create another incentive for everyone to keep going strong to the finish line.
If we hit $40,000 by the end of the campaign we'll create a bonus track for backers only. We're gonna let the backers vote on which song (of the following) that they'd most like us to cover:
Cecilia - Simon & Garfunkel
We Can Work It Out - The Beatles
Trinity: titoli - Theme song from My Name Is Trinity (Song playing during the end credits of Django Unchained)
Hi People! This is Jon from Midas Whale and we’re fresh off of The Voice on NBC and kind of scratching our heads about what to do next. Leaving the show has been what I can only imagine a dead person would feel like if they were around to hear their own condolences. Lot’s of “you gave it your all” and “you we’re robbed” and “I’m really going to miss you.” WEEEELLLLLLL, good news! We’re alive! The party doesn’t have to stop! We’ve got a ton of new songs that we can’t wait share with you. Since the beginning of our journey on the Hunger Games, er, I mean The Voice, we’ve known that the odds were not in our favor. Ryan and I have been constantly writing new songs and revamping old demos in preparation for an inevitable fond farewell to our TV friends, and warm welcome to new fans.
Already, between the both of us, we have enough material for a pair of CDs, a grudge match with the Geico folk duo, and a voyage to mars. Fortunately we’re only looking to fund one of those… Hint: it’s not the Geico grudge match (although, that is a priority for sometime in the future). For backers, however, we will be making several exclusive songs and content options available. Plus, for the extra generous, we have several fun rewards planned. For now, if you liked our instrumental from the video here it is for you to listen to over and over:
You know, we can’t come to your house, wearing ascots and try to convince you with smarmy grins that we are the most interesting men in the world, then expand your mind with some HARMONIEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS! But, we can make sure that this album is awesome. And we want to make it available for as little as a DOLLAR! But if you want to lay your hands on a PHYSICAL COPY, you can get:
- -Exclusive Kickstarter-only designs. You’ll never see this one again.
- -CD’s will be signed by us and packaged in a beautiful jewel-case that includes a booklet with band-photos and song-lyrics. NOTE: This will be included in every reward above $25.
- -The VINYL comes in retro brown packaging and is a gorgeous 10” record (same size as the classic 78’s). You’ll be kicking it old school.
We Performed our debut track of "Howling at the Moon" live at Randall Lake's Guthrie Artist Coop in Salt Lake City, Utah. This is one of many songs that will be featured on the album this fall.
We are continuing to try and make our demos accessible to you in a way that makes the most sense. We truly want you to be a part of this journey in every way. Here are a couple videos we've made so far
So, me (Jon Peter Lewis) and Ryan J Hayes created Midas Whale, an American Folk band, in the summer of 2012 when we decided to audition for NBC’s The Voice. Both Ryan and I are lifelong musicians/songwriters and currently coproduce an original rock opera called “Deep Love”. I started my career a few years ago as a finalist on American Idol and have since released a pair of records with some success. Disenchanted with the industry I eventually I went back to school with the intention of leaving the music business behind. When I met Ryan, a geology student at the time, plans changed after he showed me some of his songs. I began looking for opportunities for us to play some tunes together and when I found out that The Voice accepted duos, I figured a bit of exposure on national television couldn’t be a bad thing. So when I asked Ryan, “Wanna form a band and be on TV?” Ryan answered “Might as well”. And thus Midas Whale was born.
Much to my pleasant surprise, we turned 4 chairs and eventually advanced to the knockout rounds of the show, at which point we were released with dignity.
Rolling Stone said this about our departure:
Adam Levine often praised us as “most original”, “charismatic”, “brilliantly talented” and “charming” while Shakira noted that our most distinguishing trait was the overall intelligence of our act.
Due to our moderate success on the show and a knack for performance and songwriting/arranging, we immediately decided our next move should be an album.
Apart from our listed incentives, we offer something more—membership within a secret club. Our secret club. SHHHHHHHH! Our little secret! Listed among all our incentives are correlating rank numbers. Donors within each category will qualify for an honorary title within the club and receive instructions, benefits and privileges commensurate with their rank. You may find yourself at secret meetings, reading secret newsletters, attending secret shows, or completing secret missions. Who knows? It’s a secret.

Above all, we want to express our gratitude for the overwhelming support we have received thus far on this extraordinary musical journey. Who we are and what we will eventually become is a reflection of the people that believe in us. If you like what you've seen here or you've decided to back us, please tell everyone you know. Like us, love us and share us with all of your friends! Thank you!
Risks and challenges
While we strive to keep everything running smoothly, there are ALWAYS unforeseen problems that arise... like re-writes, remixes, re-tracking, equipment failure, etc. Nothing ever happens as one expects.
Fortunately, this isn't our first rodeo. Between the two of us we've overseen similar, large projects including the creation, marketing and distribution of two CD's and an EP, and the writing, directing and production of a 30-person rock-opera. These have given us an ability to avoid common mistakes and meet unexpected challenges with creativity and determination. If you have any specific questions please feel free to drop us a line!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
